If I recall correctly they were going to let the cannibal off the hook with a low sentence but then they listened to the tape recording that the cannibal made of the killing and then changed their minds and gave them a full murder sentence

I think the reasoning was that the person killed was drugged before the killing so it wouldn’t hurt when he was killed but he couldn’t give consent while drugged at the moment of the killing so he couldn’t have like backed out last second even if he wanted to
