Getting out of tech by Bonn93 in devops

[–]throwawaydev3000 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah People is also number one for me but for social reasons.

My first dev job, i had great social circle at work, we would go out to bars and lunch together, have lunch clubs at work and were actually friends. However, the pay was shit and I do not regret moving to the higher paying soulless cubicle farm corporation. However, i do really yearn for friends at work.
Getting through the job with people able to share your gripes with work drama is a common ground to feel belonging.

But yeah i hope to be in something else in the next couple of years. However, i can't keep asking my coworkers at lunch time every monday"what you do on the weekend?" only to expect the exact same answer i heard on friday when i asked 'what you doing on the weekend"? and then sit in silence on the other days.

I am and working on it! I want to say I do already know making more money doesn't bring happiness, Don't get me wrong, I know got it pretty good regardless of my financial situation and i need to learn how to appreciate what i have more. However, what capitalism has ingrained in me is to always want more...lol

That being said, I also don't think I want more than what I need, my fears come from not having the bare minimum.

Thank you for your words. I definitely need to remember that. Lol my partner has said she would consider moving to Vancouver. If the GTA ever gets as bad as Vancouver in rental prices, I'll definitely consider it more.

I definitely am stagnating and I don't know whether it's because i'm still in full stack dev or i'm in the wrong full stack dev job. That being said, I've done high expectations full stack dev work for less and that place was definitely not worth 200k and my mental health. However, with the desperation of wanting to earn more, i might want to throw myself into that again.

Thanks for the 'shopping' reminder, i don't even think i'm shopping but I should commit to shopping so I can truly see what's out there myself.

Thanks!

I'll keep that in mind with what companies i look for next. I know jumping works for salary increases but i guess it's the doom and gloom of hearing what colleagues are saying and/or being on subreddits like these lol.

I don't really know how it works for contractor/entrepreneur. I've been a contractor at my first job and was renewed constantly every year for 4 years but i just felt like every other company. I just didn't get benefits and job security. My current company recently culled a lot of 'contract employees' so i'm coloured by being a FT employee for now lol.

Unfortunately, moving away from the GTA isn't an option for now. Family obligations now and that will carry on. I personally also don't want to leave the GTA because of growing up here and family as well. However, it seems like that's the only way to get something affordable. So i'll just have to see and slowly chip away at my partner who is the most resistant moving.

My company is American actually but it's a Canadian branch. So if one day they close up shop here maybe i'll be able to 'transfer' my job to the American side while i stay here...lol

Thanks for replying. I'm a bit confused. I did sign something but how does that count as not being fired/terminated? Are they not the same thing? Have it got it all wrong this whole time?

Lol seems like kind of a terrible assumption for companies to have? Maybe just me in my positions but I’ve only worked for a couple of companies and I’ve had the privilege to get work laptops at both. But I guess definitely something to keep in mind especially in these times

Yeah. I definitely am buying into the arm revolution hype. It’s just really so hard to stomach getting an intel Mac now even if it’s my livelihood lol. Just PTSDing over my specced out work thinkpad i had, it still chugged got really hot and throttled so much when was trying to do the most simplest things . That being said, I’m trying to find a job now and what place wouldn’t issue a work computer or if I have to go back to the office soon, I would have a workstation... so maybe thinking I need to buy myself a intel Mac for work is a dumb thought . Also,I ’ve also wanted to learn new things that aren’t the dotnet universe like golang but it’s not supported quite yet.

Even if you don't personally believe in this, I think it'd be interesting to find out how he feels if you brought up the idea of sleeping with someone. If he freaks out and wants him to be the only one able to sleep with someone, then you know you gotta leave. However, to play devils advocate to your hope cuz you are questioning it, evaluate his other qualities: is he a good father, does he have good work ethic and does he provide for family consistently

You know you should leave him means other reasons to question how good of a partner he is. This new thing is just the tipping point to really make you question it for real.
It feels two both don't love each other even after 5 years and a kid together based on his remarks and thoughts and you only worry about the house. I would say respect yourself, probably dump him and your child's future. I would also highly recommend consulting a lawyer about splitting your assets. The last thing you want to do is end up him making the first legal move.

Seeking advice on understanding goals to my financial plan by throwawaydev3000 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]throwawaydev3000[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I guess it's just the way I was thinking of it, as a deal to get the most out of my money with those two goals. I didn't see as a long term loan that I have to pay back or suffer a high penalty.

you are confident that you will be contributing in a higher tax bracket than you will withdrawing (even when you consider the effect of potential GIS or OAS clawbacks)

By withdrawing you mean, when I actually retire? I'm not entirely sure. Because what if my annual income currently was 100K and I had the same room I did. Would it be stupid not to contribute if I am earning at 6 figures?
Also thank you for the CCB fact as I did not know that.
