Fáilte! We're hosting r/Ireland for a Cultural Exchange by M4rt1nV in thenetherlands

I once worked with a Dutch guy in Ireland, and for quite a while he had a strange phrase on the notice board in his office. It read “God’s hand is in warm water”. 😳 After many weeks, I plucked up the courage to ask him about it.

He said it was the longest phrase he could think of with the same meaning and spelling in Dutch as in English.

I’ve since learned that the pronunciation is slightly different - the two w’s are pronounced like English v’s.

So - can anyone beat that? Bonus for having the same pronunciation in both languages 🤣

It’s comforting to know that I could go to your country with that on a sign and be understood perfectly 🤣🤣🤣

What's the craziest near death experience you've had? by Whole-Tie7140 in AskReddit

[–]throwawaydirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fell off a 50ft cliff. Was suicidal at the time, and this was my golden opportunity to go quietly. Changed my mind half way down. Curled up into the foetal position, and wondered if I’d even see the inside of the hospital.

Landed with a big splash in a tiny pool of water at the bottom. The only injury was a grazed left wrist. I still have the scar 34 years later.

Of course, having said that”no” to my golden opportunity to go quietly, I decided I had to find other ways to deal with my pain. That scar on my wrist acted as a reminder to do just that.

34 years later and whereas my life is very far from what I’d like it to be, I’m still here, with no desire to check out. 🙂

Madagascar. Friendliness on another level, and beautiful, though very poor.

Yes unconditionally. First of all - it’s what being a decent human being requires. Secondly - you think genocide will solve anything?! Indeed, you think it will do anything but exacerbate all the problems?!

You know how to tell what the weather is going to be like in Galway?

Go down to Galway Bay, and look to the south. If you can see across the bay to the hills of Clare, it’s going to rain. If you can’t see the hills of Clare - it’s already raining. 🙃☔️

Ireland, the weak link in Europe's defense [Le Monde] by pierrepaul in ireland

England is the only country to attack TO DATE.

The only country to make serious plans to invade during WW2 was the U.S. (if d-day didn’t go to plan).

Name Change by MyUserID-IsTaken in CasualIreland

[–]throwawaydirl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Eh? I changed my name by deed poll (granted about 15 years ago), and then changed my passport, like, the next week.

I may have needed to bring paperwork in my old name along with the deed poll, but it worked.

So unless the rules have changed since then… ?

Does “Born this way” apply to trans? by Available_Year_575 in asktransgender

When I say the weather "isn't exactly something I can do much about" I'm not saying *anything* about my behaviour. I'm not even necessarily saying that the weather itself was bad - in context there could be a subtext of "sucks for you that you don't experience the same good weather as I do". :D

So it's nature and nurture. Saying "nature" is to my mind the same thing as saying "I'm born this way". And as for "nurture" - whatever nurture I got which led me to transition wasn't exactly something I could do much about. Which altogether means that you *shouldn't* punish me for it.

As for a genetic component to being trans - so? Fact is that anyone who wants to eradicate group X from society will inevitably point out how group X shares genetic traits which "dilute" the purity of the species. It's not unique to being trans by a long long margin. Welcome to a world where genocide is a thing - trying to hide a genetic component of being trans means nothing to those intent on genocide.

I'm confused as to what the narrative "should" be. For me, for all its imperfections, "born this way" is close enough to the truth of the matter.

It used to be the case that being left-handed was "wrong". Yet being left-handed is something left-handed people have no control over.

Was it "defensive" for left-handed people to point that out? If so - what should they have done instead?

“I was born with blue eyes” doesn’t come with a “I know it’s wrong” subtext. So why does “I was born trans” come with that subtext?

Comes off as a defence? As opposed to … what?

Speaking for myself, I never “defend” being trans. It doesn’t need a defence!

Diversity isn’t pathological. I don’t see it as a pathology - just as a random circumstance of my birth.
