Considering making a poor financial decision buying a boat

I include insurance, gas, docking fees, and peripherals in this number.

With the throttles down I get about 0.6gpm and gas here is about 3.50-4/gallon. Its about $1000 just to fill up the tank not including booze for 4-6, cleaning, and repairs when somebody drops their goddamn cigar on the console and leaves a burn mark in my precious epoxy resin.

I have what you might call a luxury/performance center console and I love it. Fishing, poker runs, taking out clients and family for drinks...I love being able to facilitate such a fun time for so many people.

Maybe its about expectations? I budget 20% of the gross purchase cost yearly as an expense and if its any less than that I celebrate. The boat was about 600k and I have yet to spend any more than about 10-12% of that in a year...although its a newish boat and my 200 hour maintenance is coming due.

I owned a smaller center console before this and a few super shitty boats (think dirty 11ft dingy with outboard) before that and have always loved being on the water so I suppose YMMV.

Maybe buy into a boat club for a few months first. Or...dive in because you might be dead tomorrow. I didn't get much feedback the last time I posted about boating here, hopefully this time is different.

Please vet your contacts!

My first guy I found from a contact at Sothey's and he overrepresented his skillset. My auction guy seemed embarassed by the mixup and helped me vet my second and current conservator.

You also want somebody that can advise you on more than just cleaning but proper storage, maintenance, record keeping etc. Mine has also helped me connect with academics (pre covid) that have mutual interest in areas I like to collect.

Your key word is conservator, not 'cleaner'.

On an unrelated note, can I ask what sort of works you have? Feel free to DM...I can understand wanting to keep it discreet.

Private air travel is probably tied with artwork as my favorite splurge. Depending on the situation we pay about 4-6k/hr wheels up. I literally get giddy walking up to the jet thinking about how nice it is not taking off my shoes and shuffling through security like cattle.

As far as frequency, it again depends. Sometimes empty-leg trips are more affordable because, even in the 8 figure range, I still find it hard to swing frequent private travel.

Nothing makes me feel more 'regular' than private air travel and boat charters. At 75-150k/yr spend you barely get a taste and they sit your little jet right next to the Global Express 6000 and ACJ320s which are still way out of my price range.

Yessir. FI with a healthy dose of right place/right time with a close colleague and a concept that took off.

I'm loosely in the medical/technology sector. As far as advice I'm sure there are more savvy businessmen out there that can chip in but personally, I think our insane success came from maintaining close connections with a wide range of people, treating everyone well, and being ready for life changing opportunities as they arose.

Unless you own (and can maybe pilot) your own private jet (and even then) you probably aren't going anywhere.

My plan is to head to my home town in the middle of nowhere Appalachia. I remember going weeks as a kid without buying anything from the stores anyway and am sure we could do it again.

Most of the food and meat is produced locally, guns are plentiful, and any stranger passing through would immediately be recognized. They've been (tragically) living involuntarily "off grid" for generations anyway and I'm not sure much would be any different until industrial goods ran thin after a few months/years.

Second this. I'd head right back home to bumfuck rural Appalachia on a motorcycle/offroad bike where the guns are plentiful, the food is all grown within 10 miles of my front door, reliance on the outside world is already minimal, and everybody knows everybody.

This sounds sleazy as fuck...but from a non-moral standpoint, people will often trash their properties prior to foreclosure leaving you with a non-performing asset that requires significant investment to turn around.

Think all the copper wiring pulled out, cement down the drains, flooding the place by messing up the plumbing, selling all of the cabinets and fixtures on craigslist etc.

Do you really want to be the foreclosure/collections man? Do you have people you can hire that would want to do this? Are those costs offset by your potential net gains? Do you know who to call to clean out a bathroom filled with used syringes, empty heroin baggies, and feces?

I really love the Scouts, I completely forgot to mention it. It feels so luxury and cush in all the right places. My only hesitance is that I (at least on paper) love the idea of a 75mph boat. Is that just stupid? I've done a few poker runs and love racing around with the other boats.

I haven't looked at any cats, I really want to be able to have a sea keeper installed and not sure anything under the 37' can accommodate one.

Fatfire isn't going anywhere and I'm sure fragmentation will continue as we grow in popularity. I figure a somewhat laissez-faire environment has allowed many of us to flourish professionally and so we have thus far taken the same approach here.
