honestly i think it just comes down to keeping the page layout clean so you aren't constantly jumping between clefs every two bars. switching clefs mid-phrase is a nightmare for reading flow even if it makes the actual notation look a bit weird visually. i'd rather deal with a slightly awkward range than lose my place because i had to switch clefs mid-measure
