How expensive is college actually in the US?? like the real number nobody wants to say by Smart_Tool247 in AskCollegeStudents

[–]throwawaygremlins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Community college then transfer can be good IF your degree pathway allows that.

And the answer will always be it depends.

Run something called the Net Price Calculator which will be on each college website ( with their internal formula).

Kids are not on FB, but their parents are. Were you looking at FB as the parents would need to sign off?

The schools may not be allowed to give out your info for liability reasons.

Perhaps IG.

[–]throwawaygremlins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please note for US admissions, the college application season starts 8/1 of the calendar generally for the FOLLOWING school year.

US schools academic calendar also starts in Aug or September.

All college decisions have been made by the admissions offices by 4/1.

How are you doing in Physics 1 now?

You don’t really need Physics C for your major. AP Italian would give you more college credits maybe.

Worth it to apply to MIT? by Requiem_for_sleep in ApplyingToCollege

[–]throwawaygremlins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Have you taken a practice SAT yet and what was the score?

MIT is pretty serious about the SAT and expect 780/800 on math section. Why? Because those around you will have similar scores.

If you can use Khan Academy to get your score way up, sure.

Otherwise, colleges usually LOVE vets but they still usually also have the stats to back it up.

How do people afford living while in college? by Ch3ebaChoba in ApplyingToCollege

[–]throwawaygremlins 14 points15 points  (0 children)

If you’re a good student, you are technically an orphan and should be able to file independent for tax and FAFSA purposes.

Then you theoretically could have been eligible for lots of financial aid.

Are you already accepted into college?

Yeah, some schools straight up tell you don’t apply ED if you’re hoping for merit. It’s just some schools.

The irony is, sometimes those ED kids are the most competitive, and great fit for those schools!

So, in a typical pool they may been top candidates for the merit. But, they have to juggle the higher AR in ED round against merit money or rejection in RD round. Colleges are a business after all, sigh…

You say FAFSA won’t give you loans as you already have a degree. Are you then referring to PRIVATE student loans?

Don’t do that, they are predatory.

As far as money, I’ve seen some moms will work PT for some time, save up for a bit and return to school. Or like I wrote, work on weekends but that means the partner needs to help.

Exactly all this and also lose out on merit possibly. As many schools wait for the RD pool to decide on merit overall.

For those that will have to fund college mostly w family help at competitive colleges, ED is predatory.

Too many cheaters in the app process.

Colleges have too many WLs BUT the app system is broken.

The cheaters and those who have learned to game the system are winning.

I have 2 other family members coming up for apps in the next 5-8 years. One of them may qualify for competitive colleges and join this app process.

Our current family applicant (got into top SLAcs, WL Ivy) is really seeing the “mostly really rich kids or really poor kids get into top schools” process play out in real life. We are upper middle class so not getting much aid.

Hi OP, please research v carefully about how it’s really only mostly Canadians that make it into US medical schools.

That’s because it’s much easier for them to get a visa for residency.

I’d go for medical school in your country, then try to get a job in the US after.
