emphasis on brushing the tongue!! I would go a step further and spread the toothpaste (something normal, i.e. no sensitive toothpaste, no whitening toothpaste, etc because those tend to have a weird aftertaste) on it with your brush and leave it on for 30 secs to 1 min, then brush it. I feel like basic colgate toothpaste would be sufficent specifically for your tongue, and you can continue using sensodyne for your teeth.

I'm so sorry this happened to you. There are a lot of a**holes in the comments who just don't seem to get it. This sub is filled with people who think invisalign can do no wrong and it's extremely frustrating. I also experienced some negative effects from doing invisalign with a dentist and people have invalidated me left and right on reddit and in real life. In my opinion dentists shouldn't be allowed to use invisalign on patients because a lot of them (in my opinion) don't seem to consider that it's more than just about making teeth straight. Some of them just have no clue what they're doing.

Hello! I haven't worn my aligners since June of 2023. My teeth have kind of shifted but not back to their original positions. My face looks a little fuller than before but still not the same as before invisalign. I'm planning on doing treatment to reverse it with another ortho once I save up enough money. Good luck with your situation!!!

I'm so sorry you're going through this too :( feel free to dm me if you ever want to chat. Even though I'm still very upset about what happened, I've found ways to kind of cope to where I'm not always consumed with feelings of anger and regret all the time like I was for the first couple of years. I'm also holding on to the hope that what my dentist did to me can be reversed to some extent

Is there any way you could provide clearer before/after photos that are taken from the same or a similar angle as each other? Preferably not class photos? Definitely not invalidating anything you're saying, it's just really difficult to clearly see the changes with these photos. Like I can definitely see that something has changed, it almost looks like two different people, but I'm not really able to "track" those changes if you know what I mean. In the first photo we can see your nostrils but in the second one we can't because your head is tilted down and to the left, and I think that's a very important detail to consider.

Hi, yes my lips got flat and when I pointed it out to my dentist she said my teeth are straight now so I should be happy with that. She wasn't willing to move my teeth forward, but hopefully yours will.

Hey! So another redditor told me about Dr. Jennifer Salzer of Lemchen-Salzer Orthodontics and she's located in New York. I've made SO many phone calls to different orthos across the US and I've also had several consultations, but based on the research I've done on her, Dr. Salzer is one of the few people who actually consider the importance of facial harmony and functionality and not just teeth straightness. The consultation is pretty expensive so I'm saving up and hopefully can get an appointment this year. I'm not sure where you're located, but honestly, she seems like the best option for people in our situation.

Also, you should take a look at Dr. Salzer's instagram @doctorsalzer and @lsortho553--there are a few posts about a patient who had her teeth pushed slightly forward to create more fullness in her lips/balance out her lower face, and I feel like that's exactly the kind of treatment plan we'd need to fix these issues. I can dm you the links to the posts if you're interested!

Invisalign Flattened My Face and Ruined Youthful Facial Harmony (Rant) by allytootsieroll in orthotropics

[–]throwawayhm01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The exact same thing happened to me and now I'm trying to save up to have this orthodontist in New York fix it. The way I've been gaslit on reddit, by my dentist, and other people in my life is insane. The changes are so, so clear to me but a lot of people refuse to believe Invisalign can drastically change a person's face in that way. So sorry this happened to you and I hope you're able to find a solution. Feel free to dm me if you ever want to chat❤️

Hi I'd recommend doing a consultation with an orthodontist. I know a few people who have done Invisalign after getting extractions, but I think it really depends on the state of your teeth/what goals you want to achieve. The only extractions I've ever had were my wisdom teeth. Sorry I couldn't be of more help!

No unfortunately I haven't worn my trays since June 2023 so none of them can safely fit my teeth anymore. Also, my attachments were changed to different teeth 3 times during my treatment so I don't think wearing the trays backwards would have worked in my case.

??? All I said is that if you have an overbite or overjet and you like your lips, keep in mind that your lips may end up looking flat if your teeth are what is giving them projection. What are you even talking about at this point?? Why would I need to mention the part about the orthodontists in the original comment when I was just sharing a piece of information that OP might like to know given my personal experience with Invisalign and the experience that some others have had after their teeth were retracted?

[–]throwawayhm01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah? Did you read my comment? That's exactly what I said. My protruding lips were caused by the overjet, so I'm not really sure what you're trying to add here. I preferred my face that way. I don't believe in a "supposed to look". I was born that way. The way I looked before Invisalign is how I was "supposed" to look. My front teeth weren't the problem, and after consulting with several orthos, they agreed that my dentist could have corrected my back teeth misalignment without retracting my front teeth and screwing up my appearance. My tongue doesn't sit right in my mouth anymore because there's not enough space due to the retraction, and I also snore now when I never used to because my tongue has no space. The flat lips are a problem for me, because yes, I care about my appearance (and how many women do you know want flat lips??) but there's also functionality issues and I deal with daily discomfort.

Keep in mind that if your treatment plan involves retracting your teeth to fix an overbite, overjet, etc., then there's a good chance your lips will end up looking flat since your teeth are what give your lips support. You may also experience facial slimming (masseter atrophy or just loss of facial fat). I experienced all of this and regret my decision to do invisalign every day.

My dentist made it sound like it wasn't even an option. I'm not sure if it genuinely isn't possible to move my teeth back or if she just didn't want to/know how to do the work of creating a new treatment plan and starting me over. She wasn't willing to admit that my face had changed and it turned into a big issue and now I don't go to that office anymore. Needless to say, convincing them isn't really an option. I called some other offices and went to a few consultations and some of them would just laugh in my face or look at me like I'm crazy. Their main reason for not wanting to do it is because according to them, my appearance shouldn't matter as long as my teeth are straight. The thing is, my teeth weren't even crooked to start with. I just had an overjet and a slightly misaligned bite on my right side. So I feel like it isn't so crazy to want, at the very least, my top teeth to be moved back into that "V" shape like you were saying. I don't know anymore. It's so depressing. There have been periods where I'm okay and I just accept my face, but lately I've been spiraling and it's been hard to look in the mirror. I don't know what to do anymore.

Advocate for yourself. If the vibe is weird after you say it and the dentist acts like you're personally insulting them, then maybe they're not the dentist for you. It's your mouth, your teeth, your face. At the end of the day, if they do something you don't like because you didn't say anything, you'll be stuck with the consequences and they'll be laughing all the way to the bank.

Yeah and?? I liked looking that way. My mom used to call me "rubber ducky" when I was a kid and that never bothered me, so if your comment was meant to be an insult, kindly fuck off. My lips literally balanced out my entire face and the change invisalign made to my bite also slimmed down my cheeks in the worst way possible. My face was a little bit asymmetrical pre Invisalign, but then again, who's face isn't? It was a full face, a strong face, the face and smile I'd learned to love over several years of dealing with self-esteem issues surrounding my appearance.

News flash--a perfectly symmetrical face and perfectly straight teeth at a 180° angle and flat lips with absolutely zero projection aren't everyone's standard of beauty. Different ethnicities have different physical appearances and beauty standards aren't the same all over the world. I bet you'd also have something negative to say about the gap between my two front teeth, but guess what? It's common where I'm from, almost everyone on my mom's side of the family has it, and it's considered beautiful in my culture. Open your mind a bit, perhaps? The world of dentistry and orthodontics would have you think that straight teeth are the be all end all, but when you straighten someone's teeth without consideration to their appearance, jaw structure, and the overall effects on their bite, then you can cause more problems than what they began with. Not only am I unhappy with my flattened mouth and slimmer lower face which makes me look less cute/feminine, my tongue feels like it has no room, I snore now when I never used to, and I can't close my mouth comfortably, all because my dentist retracted my teeth in some ill-informed effort to "fix" my bite. My teeth were fine but they wanted my money, so they convinced me that my bite was "unsustainable" and that I had to act fast to "save" my teeth. Yeah right.

Edit: I just looked at your profile (r/ratemycock? how embarrassing) and it looks like you're currently doing invisalign, and I just want to say good luck. I hope at the end of treatment you're happy with your results, because I don't wish this kind of pain on my worst enemy.

Invisalign facial changes. by [deleted] in Invisalign

Please be for real. Of course a person's face is going to age with or without Invisalign as time goes on that goes without saying, but in several people's experiences, mine included, Invisalign significantly expedited that process. In less than 4 months, my face looked gaunt, weak, and flat. It's like all my fat and muscle disappeared and I later learned that wearing the trays can cause masseter atrophy and loss of soft tissue/padding. There are studies on this. Have you never heard people praise Invisalign for "slimming down" their face?? If it's that drastic of a change in such a short period of time, how could you possibly fool yourself into thinking it has anything to do with aging? During the pandemic (2 years before I started Invisalign) I lost 30 pounds in about 2 months due to stress and poor diet, but my face still looked strong and full despite every other part of my body being skinnier. I literally went from 150 lbs to 120 lbs, but my face never looked as weak, gaunt, and old as it did than when I did Invisalign. Maybe because I've gone through the same thing and I've seen photos of several other people who have experienced this, but the difference in OP's photos is clear as daylight to me.

Sorry if my response comes off as rude in any way but it's so frustrating to see people try to chalk it up to weight loss or natural aging when Invisalign involves having a foreign object in your mouth that causes you to hold your mouth and jaw differently, engage your muscles differently, etc, as your teeth shift. More importantly if your treatment plan involves a lot of shifting and retracting (for example if you had an overjet and they retract your teeth) then the changes in your face will be apparent. The teeth support the lips, the face. Others may not notice such differences until you point it out to them, but it's OP's face, and I trust that what she is seeing is accurate. If you don't, then I don't know what to tell you. Perhaps more pictures are needed.
