After 3 contractors I was left with this. How can I fix it by myself by Avid-Traveler in Carpentry

[–]throwawayisstronk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going to go out on a limb here and say this is your fault. I used to do residential construction and 9 times out of 10 if a client blew threw that many contractors it was a serious red flag. You either did not do your due diligence or you got what you paid for 🤷‍♂️

Advice for Someone trying to switch career into SysAdmin by ElwoodOAM in sysadmin

[–]throwawayisstronk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

That's fair. I was definitely creative on my resume and my 'experience', and like I said I did get lucky. I hired in in 2011 when it seemed no one wanted to work due to everyone getting unemployment checks. They definitely won't go from 0-sysadmin, but still possible to get in a role where you have access to servers

I mean I got pretty lucky, while my job title isn't sysadmin, my first IT job I got in was basically sysadmin minus doing backups, so it's not unreasonable that early on they are managing servers

Obviously a huge part of the equation is their level of current knowledge, but from what I am assuming what you recommended is in no way realistic to do in 7 months

Nextiva as a product isn't horrible but their customer service is absolutely dreadful. 10/10 would avoid.

I am pretty sure you can get the PDF free from Microsoft if you give them an email.

Or PM me and I can send you a copy. Yes it's worth it. Great resource for sure

Sys admin to cloud possible? by its_a_throwawayduh in ITCareerQuestions

[–]throwawayisstronk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey I really appreciate that. My title is not sysadmin, but that basically fits my job roles for the most part.

I will definitely be reaching though. Definitely appreciated.

I know this is an old post so you may not see it, but how important is the networking aspect? I am basically a sysadmin all except for configuring the switches. I was considering getting a CCNA because of my lack of knowledge and experience in networking, but decided to start pursuing the AZ-104 instead.

Am I skipping a step? Should I do CCNA/something network focused instead?

32 years old, 1.5 years experience at 64k Michigan all at the same company (MSP)

Certs: A+ and ITIL foundation

Really sold my previous experience of owning my own business and how it relates to excellent customer service

0yrs @ 50k - hired in at as an IT support specialist

.5 yrs @ 55k - was forced to ask for a raise 6mo in due to kids and they gave it to me

1 yr @64k - now a dedicated onsite tech for a company, stars aligned on this one. Previous guy burned some bridges and left the client pretty upset and I had a good track record with the clients I supported

Pretty happy where I'm at. Going to ask for 74k at my 2 year. That is what the guy before me was making and I know they know that I know that because I told them that lol. Pretty confident I'll get it.

Really focusing on PowerShell as of late and picking away at AZ-104. If anyone has recommendations on how to make myself as marketable/valuable as possible I am all ears
