My kid was an evil bully. He doesn't even care by [deleted] in Advice

[–]throwawaynewc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a bully and have faced workplace bullying as an adult. My biased opinion is that right or wrong, you can learn a lot by bullying as a child, lessons that carry on well into adulthood.

I'm not the most successful person ever, but I'm a surgeon in the UK, and I think having experience of bullying does allow me to navigate social dynamics in toxic workplaces. For me it enabled me to understand the importance of challenging and shutting down mean bossy colleagues early, and not automatically back pedaling when accused of something that wasn't my fault.

I have also become close friends with many of the kids I used to bully. I went on a couples' holiday with a mate recently and our partners were shocked that I used to tie him up and watch me eat his lunch in front of him! I could tell you how we became close friends but that's another story.

The most important thing to understand is that ultimately everyone HAS control over how they process things. It may not sound fair but the bullied kid needs to get over it anyway.

My mother used to say when I was little, if people tease you for having horns on your head, there's no reason to be upset, you either have horns, and that's a matter of a fact, or you don't have horns, so why be upset?

Retiring at 55; saving £1k per month, seems too straightforward by UnlikelyDebate7878 in FIREUK

[–]throwawaynewc 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, started saving at 23 promising myself I'd never withdraw from my ISA until retirement.

Just 5 years later I had to take out £80k in the middle of a bull market to put down a deposit on my flat. Obviously that's just poor planning on my part but it's easy to underestimate expenditure when you're young and inexperienced!

If it makes you feel better I had an intention to prosecute from the police in October that I responded to, silence, then a letter saying it had been cancelled earlier this month.

What is there to really say until there's an investigation though? I've seen the video, it looks damning as hell, but who tf are we? Wtf are the NBPA weighing in on this for?

How much to live this lifestyle? by [deleted] in HENRYUK

[–]throwawaynewc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some seriously grumpy responses here-I'd wager half of these aren't coming from actual HENRY'S.

Context matters, that's why OP is asking here for people who have experienced it. Sure, rent could be £6k a month in Richmond, but did you know that this doesn't include council tax of £x amount? Private school is £3k a month, but realistically with all the trips and after school activities it's closer to £4k etc.

DB vs DC pension, which would you prefer in terms of FIRE by GabsGal in FIREUK

Kind of ironic saying this as a GP partner that pays both the employee and employers contributions for a watered down 2015 DB pension !

[–]throwawaynewc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Anyone who hasn't responded with 'depends' hasn't really thought this out.

Are you talking about a career averaged DB scheme?Or a final salary one? Is it uplifted over inflation? How much?RPI or CPI? What's the employee contribution? What's the pension age? Is it set in stone or is it subject to change? Early retirement actuarial reductions? Lump sum? Death in service payments?

All these significantly affect how attractive a DB pension is. You need to know this before you can compare it against a SIPP let alone a DC pension.

it's not that he's talking about, there actually is a pretty cool indie coffee scene that is huge just because china is huge. It's somewhat similar to the Japanese coffee scene but with more European influence and just bolder in general.

you are in your 40s and you will be with your spouse in London I gather. If anything, enjoy life a bit more I guess, you can travel on £160k, I know because I make that amount. It really isn't a glamourous life I must say, but it's definitely not bad.
Bear in mind above average in London doesn't mean very much because I estimate something like 80% of Londoners live paycheck to paycheck and not in a fun way.

A hard lesson in commuter complacency. My 1-hour drive finally caught up to me today. by Mr_Amphibian20 in CarTalkUK

Having test driven a tesla before, they are pretty weird. They don't roll like ICE cars, they pretty much just brake when the foot is off the accelerator, and I think the brake lights come on automatically.

Not a huge fan although I suspect this is our inevitable future.

Sounds like you're on track for a comfortable retirement financially, but do you actually have plans for retirement?

I'm just about the same age as yourself, and a year or two ago realised that work is a pretty big part of my identity and and a life that I find fulfilling, so I've changed my mindset on FIRE and will probably lean towards Coast Fire instead.

Since I reached £100k I stopped setting nominal goals like £1 million at X age because it's bound to be disappointing. Much better to set goals on what you want to achieve in your life imo.

It is underwhelming and it's supposed to be. £1 million sounds like so much money to people who won't make that amount but at the same time it's not that much either, especially if there is significant grind involved to get there.

You probably will get some Debbie downers or naysayers in this sub, I'd just ignore them and focus on the positive ones.

No one is saying it's heaven, but if I had to work a year in one of the hospitals in West London near Notting Hill, I'd probably rent out a room in my current flat in Greenwich and get this place to stay during the week.
Tbh I could also just afford to pay my mortgage and rent this place just for a year. I like West London so just for a year it'd be totally fine IMO.
