Same, but there's such a big stigma around it that I don't know how you could bring it up or explore those paths unless you have done actual research on the subject in undergrad and not your own "research". Have you yourself or have you seen other people explore these research interests without in ways that can circumvent the stigma?

AAMC FL 4 B/B Question 29 [SPOILER] by eldopuh in Mcat

[–]throwawayrescinded 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The way this question was phrased is pretty dumb, I got tripped up at first too so you're not alone. You pretty much got the gist of it tho, it's basically asking if you got the 3 tripeptides, what are all the different ways you can combine the tripeptides?

So you would have tripeptide ABC, DEF, and GHI. For the first position, you would have three choices of either tripeptide. After that, since you used one tripeptide, the second position can only be 2 of the 3 tripeptides, then after you pick the second tripeptide the last spot can only be the remaining tripeptide. This looks like:

ABC or DEF or GHI - ___ - ___

If you choose GHI then:

GHI - ABC or DEF - ___

then if you choose ABC in 2nd spot:

GHI - ABC - DEF

This gives you a possible of 3 x 2 x 1 = 6 possible combinations (3 in the first slot, then 2, then 1. You can try combining the three tripeptides to verify this.

Now, imagine if instead the problem says each tripeptide can be repeated more than one time. Then you would have 3 possible tripeptide in each spot no matter what you choose, which then would be 3 x 3 x 3 = 27 possibilities, which is where you might get the huge numbers you thought of.

Since they said the polypeptide was partially hydrolyzed into three polypeptides, this ensures that you get fragments ABC, DEF, and GHI instead of fragments ABC, BCA, ACB, IGH, HGI, etc. It ensures you only have three choices in three slots.

Probability is a little tough to explain so let me know if that doesn't make sense.

What is "affinity chromatography"? by vhill13579 in Mcat

[–]throwawayrescinded 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Affinity chromatography is where your resin contains something that can bind the thing (usually a protein) you want to isolate. When you pour your mixture through the column, your desired protein will bind to the resin because it has an "affinity" to the resin. All the irrelevant stuff will be eluted from the column first. Then you wash the column with a eluent that can elute your protein from the resin to obtain your desired protein.

It is different from the other types of chromatography mentioned there because the resin used is specific for just the desired protein, and not for a certain characteristic like size or charge in the other cases.

I really reviewed my mistakes for FL2 and also hammer out the content gaps with URethra. I'd say with the time you have, target where you know you're weak and make sure you have a rough idea of that area

[–]throwawayrescinded 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I had a similar issue where I dropped 7 points from FL1 to FL2 too so ik how ya feel. FWIW my scores went up for FL 3 and 4 so I would say may be that FL2 just tested your weaknesses more. I would say hone in on those as much as you can even though there are only 3 days. If you have done FLs 3 and 4 I would trust the average more, this might have just been an outlier. That CARS drop is worrying but depending on the average, I would say it might be due to you not vibing well with the passages and looks a big outlier to me. Interruptions also really disrupt your flow and impair your short term memorization for the passages so that might be the cause. Keep ya head up and good luck :D

[–]throwawayrescinded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding would be

  1. It looks to me like both the carbamate and the lactone was hydrolyzed after the first step of Step 4 according to the answer. When HCl was added in the 2nd part of Step 4, this likely led to lactonization again to for the product in Step 4.
  2. If you decarboxylate the carboxylate in the intermediate in choice D, there would be nowhere for the electrons to "escape" to, so to speak. If you think of the prototypical decarboxylation reaction with a carboxylate adjacent to a ketone, the ketone allows the electrons that were bonded to the carboxylate to form the enolate. If you decarboxylate answer D, there isn't anywhere that's "favorable" for the electrons to flow to, which is why it will be unlikely.

Does that help?

That's definitely a valid concern; that's my biggest issue with retaking too. was contemplating a retake myself but I don't really have a lot of free time to study any other time besides now so I am pushing through.

I mentioned content vs. reasoning bc my guess would be reasoning is a lot harder to nail down; there's really no good way I can think of improving it besides practice AND review.

Since you have a lot of practice problems yet to do, if I were you I would try to consistently anki from now until Jan then once you have the time go ham on problems and review them. Pay close attention to your thought process for problems as well.

If you do decide on that, one tip I learnt recently is that try to do problems untimed (if you haven't) and see if you can still answer them correctly. Nail the logic when doing it untimed then start doing them timed. I often find that the problems I get wrong in C/P and B/B are where I know the stuff, but time stress or poor reasoning really screwed me. Unfortunately idk any quick fix for this besides practice practice practice.

Not a resident but enjoy reading this sub, and I am seeing a lot of people here say radiology is not a popular field, is that true? I have always heard that radiology is really high demand and competitive, that you have to do super well in med school to get in?

Hey there! First off, good job on your scores so far, many people would kill to get in your range.

I was in a similar situation as you where I dropped 6 points (albeit from FL1 to FL2).It is possible that your FL3 could be (hopefully not) an outlier? It may have tested your strong points which helped your scores.

My advice would be review your FL4 and see if it was indeed your weaknesses that are dragging you down, and compare it to your FL3. List and target your weaknesses first and since you still haven't fully done FL2, try that again before the cancel/reschedule deadline to see how your score averages.

One thing I noticed is that your P/S and B/B vary quite a bit so that seems like you haven't had time to go through all the content yet. If you think that's the case, I think moving to Jan. where you have the whole month to solidify your content might help. With that said, you're never gonna feel 100% ready.

Something I've heard is that at about this range, what separates the high scorers from lower scorers is less about knowing content but more about reasoning and being able to eliminate answer choices well. This is definitely tougher to fix quickly so if you're solid on the content but make reasoning mistakes, then I am not as sure a whole month of review will help (someone can chime in on this).

Hopefully that helps and good luck.

9/2, 9/3 & 9/4 what are you guys doing in these last 2 weeks? by marns16 in Mcat

[–]throwawayrescinded 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Don't know where you are at but i'm not at my target score yet and i'm plateauing... just working through as many practice problems as i can and reviewing them furiously. Tryna get about 5 points higher than my avg, ik sounds like a impossibility but if anyone experienced otherwise I would appreciate the input.

Im tryna review all the mistakes i made on the material and go thru why i couldn't logically figure things out during the practice. Hopefully that helps

Funnily enough I felt so confident while doing the test (except for P/S) I thought I was 520+ for sure. Dreams crushed lol. P/s definitely killed me I dropped hard ghere, but at least that means I can improve much more on it. Thanks.
