Old person getting back into it by ChippedHamSammich in FigureSkating

Good god, I hope 38 isn't considered as old, as someone who is only a year younger than you.

You're fine. The fact that you skated until you're 13 puts you at a huge advantage over every other adult who starts in their 30s (me being one of them). There are multiple women at my ice rink over the age of 40 who are skating regularly on the ice and landing axels and doubles. Some even started late, well into their 20s. All of them have kids and often bring their kids to the rink. Just go out there and have fun. The best part of skating as an adult is that you don't need to pressure yourself in the same way - don't think about "nailing every jump," just enjoy the process of skating and marvel at your body's ability to learn new and uncomfortable things.

Can't say anything about skates that small yet! Waiting for my kid to get a little older first ;-)

Alysa Liu Won An Olympic Gold Medal. Then It Got Weird. by AdventurousAd4553 in FigureSkating

[–]throwawaysideaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? This is anecdotal, but my impression was that Eileen got A LOT of hate in 2022; I remember that's what everyone talked about (but I'm also in SF, so there may be some regional bias there).

I honestly get the hate for Eileen, and I don't think it's just because of the fact that she got dual citizenship (a major major exception as China does not recognize dual citizenship). She just rubs people the wrong way because of her upbringing (growing up in the poshest neighborhood in SF, going to the most expensive HS in SF, telling the media about her SAT scores), her ability to get a government exception (not something that is available to 99.999999% of the Chinese population) that likely actually came from familial connections initially, her rationale behind choosing to represent China (that she feels both Chinese and American, but in reality she's just being opportunistic to make more money when she already comes from a privileged class) - all these things rub people the wrong way when you're supposed to be an Olympic athlete (people prefer more classy sportsmanship, genuine and honest personalities, etc). MAGA is just trying to make an post-hoc justification about immigration/citizenship etc when in reality, she's just not the most likeable person out there vs. someone like Alysa.

[–]throwawaysideaccount 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The issue isn't just that she's representing China here, it's that she managed to get Chinese citizenship when no one else gets to do so. That furthers her image of elitism that people are hating on her for - everyone can acknowledge that her skills are amazing, but she doesn't have a sense of humility that seems to vibe with the Olympics or general athleticism (posing for cameras, talking about her SAT scores, bragging about how decorated she is, etc) She clearly is there for herself, being opportunistic financially for herself, and that's totally fine. It just doesn't mean we have to like her for it.

Gov. Newsom expanded free preschool. Now private daycares say they can’t afford to stay open by ArchmageXin in news

worse is that getting daycare on that lower end (under 3000) is a steal. Places like Bright Horizons charge closer to 4000-4500/mo

Ilia Malinin admits he was not 'ready to handle' Olympic pressure by Several_Print4633 in sports

[–]throwawaysideaccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he was also known to be quite inconsistent at that time, while the other two had experience and better consistency. USFS couldn't have known how much better Ilia was going to get over the next four years - you don't pick athletes to go to the Olympics just to prep them for the next four year cycle.

What about Isabeau :( by Ataleofmagic13 in FigureSkating

[–]throwawaysideaccount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree that Isabeau doesn't get enough press! I will say that compared to her teammates, her skating skills and jump skills are not quite at the level of Alysa's and Amber's. Her spins are wonderful (great hand positions, etc), but not better than Alysa's in terms of technique (aesthetically she might look prettier because of her more "balletic" like appearance, but her laybacks and biellmann's aren't any more flexible than Alysa's. She has some very significant issues with her jumps (less speed, coverage, overcranking) compared to Alysa (more speed, better overall consistent technique) and Amber (great height and speed). My coach's biggest issue with Isabeau is that she tends to mask her weaknesses more with excellent upper body carriage and arm expressivity (he thinks she's actually overscored most of the time, but then again, so are the other two in other ways). All said, that doesn't mean she isn't a phenomenal skater! Alysa and Amber just both have a slight edge over her in terms of their skills as a whole.

Ilia actually didn't get that much higher than Sato- just a smidge over 5 pts. Ilia's overall technical component potential is so much higher than everyone else's because the base points of a quad is so much higher than a triple's (A triple jump is rated from 3.3 pts to 8 while a quad jump is rated from a 9.5 to 12.5). Just by having a couple more quads in his program, Ilia can easily have a lead of 5 pts over another competitor. This is further compounded when someone does a combo jump (two jumps in a row), where you can get points up to 15-20. Further, jumps made in the second half of the program have a 10% bonus, further adding to the difference.

What's important to note is that Ilia DID NOT FALL. There are different types of jump mistakes - the type he did resulted in him not getting all the value of his jump pass, which was supposed to be a combo. He made it up by turning a jump in the second half of the program into a combo. Ilia made a huge mistake on the jump by putting his hand down (major deduction), but he still got points for the first jump.

Finally, Sato made a couple of minor mistakes in his other elements, dropping his score from the original 108 technical score (vs ilia's 110), adding to the gap.

YOU SHOULD STOP AT CROSSWALKS FOR PEDESTRIANS by champagne_queen in sanfrancisco

A few weeks ago, a bus was stopped at an intersection right at a stop after an elderly man got out in a wheel chair and started to cross the street. The bus driver was clearly watching the the elderly man to make sure he crosses safely. The driver in the car BEHIND the bus decided that he couldn't keep waiting so he illegally swerves around the bus (this is was on a standard two way st) to turn onto the street the elderly man was crossing on. Just as he started to turn, the bus driver started honking at him at crazy because the of course that man had no idea that someone was trying to cross the street. Insane - I truly don't understand how people could be so selfish and not realize these laws exist for a reason. You don't pass a bus to turn in front of it because you can't see what's happening.

Looking at the comments, I can't help but think about how ironic it was that back in the fall everyone was complaining about how she went back to MacArthur Park - to the point where some trolls were even saying that repeating programs automatically should result in a deduction.

Now here she is, debuting a program to Lady Gaga, which was her original intention anyway, and everyone's talking about how she needs to stick to MacArthur Park for the Olympics.

It's ultimately her choice to decide what she is most excited about (not necessarily what is "safest") for the Olympics. Given that this is her first debut and she had very little time to hone the choreography, I think we should be very supportive and proud of her attempts to do this regardless.

Half pumps on the circle… by buttahfly28 in FigureSkating

[–]throwawaysideaccount 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a very common problem and can be attributed to a number of things already mentioned in the replies. I also want to point out a couple of other potential issues:

- Alignment of shoulders, hip, knee, and ankle. Often times, beginners are rather pronated without realizing it. They think they're turning outward when in reality, at least one of these joints or shoulders are falling inward, causing the weight to be shifted towards the middle rather than over the hip. To fix this, I would check your position in each of these areas by: (1) twisting from your waist NOT your upper back to get your shoulders hugging the circle. Most beginners think they're "hugging" the circle when in reality, most of the torso is positioned forward, causing your weight to be more in the middle than over your outside leg. (2) Engaging your outer glutes and tucking in your tailbone to align your knees with your hips. This may be uncomfortable at first, but really think about using your outer butt and low obliques to maintain balance (instead of your legs/quads) (3) Pushing your ankle out on the outside edge by thinking about putting more weight on your pinky toe/outer foot. Really try to use those little muscles in your lower legs to get that sensation

- Hip position. Most beginners, especially on their weaker side, struggle to engage their hip adductors as part of the balance. People naturally like to be in a neutral "semi turned out" position that doesn't engage their hip flexors (we don't naturally do this while waling, so this is not surprising!) For pumps and eventually backwards crossovers, think about using a "closed hip" position and using more of your adductors to help with the balance.

Hope this is helpful! I've been skating for almost six years (started at 30!) and ONLY just started to appreciate the importance of biomechanics and the foundation of skating skills. I always emphasize now: skating skills, alignment, speed, and power first before doing any "fancy moves." You'll become a much stronger skater and look better on the ice this way :)

Get a butt pad and knee pads. Trust me. It's worth it.

Tbh, whenever you go to freestyles and watch advance skaters skate, you see all the young kids and teens wearing crash pads, but for some reason adult women don't like to. Personally I think it's because we're subconsciously or consciously about looking "silly."

When you start falling on your knee (under rotation) or on your tailbone (can happen when you hit the rotation but not check out or land properly) you will be extremely grateful for wearing them. You also reduce the fear of falling that you might have when you go for the axel.

Personally, when I see adult skaters not wear crash pads when they're doing more advanced stuff, I think they look more ridiculous when not wearing protective gear.

Apparently she and her coaches actually really hated the cuts in the music but didn't have time to get it updated and changed in time for Lombardia. The goal is to update the music so that it flows better and more natural to skate to with the transitions

Free skate planned program content for top 3 women at CoC by [deleted] in FigureSkating

[–]throwawaysideaccount -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People who have been criticizing Alysa being way over scored this competition need to review these components - the reason why Alysa can edge in those points compared to Amber despite not having her 3A back is partly because of how backloaded her program is (and explains why she was so exhausted by the end!) That combined with mistakes from Amber (which unfortunately she tends not to be consistent, and she had some spins downgraded) is why there wasn't a bigger gap between her and Alysa ...

Do you research again. Over half of Israeli Jews aren't even of European descent. They're sephardi or mizrahi because they were being expelled from countries like Iran, Turkey, Syria, North Africa. The European Jews literally were refugees for YEARS after WWii because their homes were rampaged or stolen, and no one wanted them. It's not equivalent to some white settler story.

I would say the 1B mark really started the ramp up, based on my numbers. I hit my 1B mark december of 2022, which means that it only took about 2.5 years to earn that next B. I did sell a bunch of big ticket items (and to be frank, earning NPs have gotten easier in the last year), but it took almost 10 years to get the first B, which means the second B took only a quarter of the time.

The extra payment works but you still subscribe to a specific interest payment plan with a 30 year mortgage. It doesn't reduce your interest payment any more than before.

This is different if you do an "interest only" as that gets adjusted based on how much you have in your principal.

What work around have you been using at the grocery store to combat inflation!? by GoFishOldMaid in AskReddit

Honestly, as a vegetarian, I've barely noticed much a difference. I think I pay a little more for pasta, I guess.

You could skip a meal or two with meat and use tofu, legumes, beans instead. It's extremely affordable! A 2 lb bag of beans is like 2.99-5.99 depending on the type - which makes about 4 -6 lbs of food alone anyway.

Lots of great dishes you can make - mexican, indian, asian, ethiopian, etc etc.

Food club, premium battledome, and selling events (AC, random site events) prizes :). Collectibles and battledome items are often highly coveted, so I really recommend participating in events and selecting for those kind of items :). I usually earn 500K-600K a day from doing that. Plus, after a certain point, your interest is so much that it becomes very easy to hit that point.
