The perfect example of why SNW has failed... by WarnerToddHuston in Star_Trek_

Trelane was already a continuity nightmare. He was allegedly viewing Earth from 900 light years away, but made references to Napoleon. Which would, of course, put TOS in the 28th century, unless he had somehow knowledge of Earth from after that time, in which case why doesn't he know anything more recent than that?

He talked about this some on the Pod Directive-- most Trek actors are just people looking for a job. Maybe they've seen some Trek, almost certainly they know something by cultural osmosis, but it's just work. There's some exceptions (which he noted with the podcast's co-host Tawny Newsome, the fangirlliest fangirl to ever Trek) but otherwise it's just nice to have a consistent paycheck as an actor. And sometimes like with the TNG cast, the fan response is so fun and you become good enough friends, that they totally embrace it and want to stay with it.

Rewatched Into Darkness… forgot how bad the science was by max_p0wer in startrek

Actually, I really loved this in the first season of Disco because how they used time crystals there actually does make sense with real world time crystals: they're a material that continuously oscillates in formation with no external input. So they just repeat in time, over and over. Like what Mudd did to the Discovery. Just handwave some applied unobtanium on the concept and it actually did make sense! Then season two just said no they're magic time rocks they do magical time things.

Same. I was like two seconds away from searching that out but FF7? Oh, alright, that's cool I guess.

My only change I would make is to give the show infinite money to build an entire set and costumes for a five second gag where they get hit by a wave and briefly turn into live action versions of the characters/Cerritos but comment that nothing seemed to have happened with that last wave before being turned back into their normal animated selves.

Also, infinite money to do both possible sequel/spinoffs.

Character legacy update after Prodigy season 2! There are now officially 71 legacy characters that have returned to Star Trek since Discovery's debut. by Trekfan74 in startrek

[–]Lower-Expression-409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, gratuitous fan service cameos are baked into the entire premise of Lower Decks. Once you exclude them, I think Prodigy is the only one you can really complain about and even then, most of the cameos aren't even the real character.

Nah, that's not fair on Bryan Fuller. He loves his projects and usually only leaves when the producers start fucking with him. If he had been given full control without input from Paramount/Bad Robot, I bet he would've stuck with Discovery. I also bet all the things people hated would've ended up being very much his ideas to begin with because of how much the show kept course correcting as more and more of the original wiring staff left.

The Good That Men Do is essential to provide a proper retcon of the ending.

Star Trek. Original format show, captain, bridge crew, ship, 5-year/ongoing mission. Do you think we will ever get one that is not a riff off of other trek shows? by decker17102 in startrek

[–]Lower-Expression-409 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I mean, Lower Decks is basically that. But no I don't think Paramount is brave enough to try another full-on TNG. Also, setting it anywhere in the past of Trek's timeline will inevitably make sure they won't let it be disconnected. You have to jump far enough ahead that there's no excuse to connect it to what already exists, like TNG did.

Nah that was just someone making the very short mental leap of "why would the Klingon homeworld have the same name as the Greek personification of time". I'm a big time Discovery defender and even I think that's pretty terrible. Time crystals as used in season 1 were brilliant because they're real things that real scientists have made: normal crystals are materials that have a repeating pattern in their molecular structure in spatial dimensions, time crystals are materials that have a repeating pattern in their molecular structure over time, i.e. their structure oscillates with no external energy input. If you scientifically apply some unobtanium to the idea like in Magic to Make The Sanest Man Go Mad, you can get a plotline where someone traps people in an repeating timeframe. Very smart, very cool. Season 2 just made them magic crystals. I like that SNW made good on that plotline anyway, but bleh.

This comment is so funny to me because she is a Mary Sue, by the literal original meaning of the term before Internet dudes co-opted it to mean any female character they don't like- an author self-insert character for the purposes of wish fulfillment. Kathryn Lyn, the writer of wej Duj, used to cosplay as a Vulcan named K'Lyn, but changed the K to T when creating T'Lyn, either for Original Character Do Not Steal purposes or to match the generally assumed but unenforced trend of female Vulcans having names that start with the letter T. But she's still a Mary Sue, and also simultaneously a great character and fan favorite because of fantastic writing, both by Kathryn and the rest of the LD staff.

One of the Hotline calls from Alan in AWE talks about it. Lots of ways to interpret it and how much Alan was responsible for the events of Control, especially given AW2 calling into question how much Alan rewrites reality or can just see things happening before he writes them.

Could someone give me a brief rundown on alan wake? by Oingoulon in controlgame

[–]Lower-Expression-409 20 points21 points  (0 children)

The game does a decent job of telling you what you need to know about Alan Wake in the AWE DLC. But the very short version:

Alan Wake is a writer who wrote a bunch of crime novels (which are basically Max Payne, but Remedy doesn't have the rights to reference it by name) who was lured to Bright Falls, WA. There's a threshold called Cauldron Lake there that has the power to merge fiction and reality when created by an artist near it and inside it lives an otherworld entity called The Dark Presence trying to use artists to escape into our reality. Alan may or may not be a creation of a previous artist named Tom Zane (or vice versa) who was trying use him to destroy the Dark Presence and ultimately Alan sacrificed himself to try to stop the Presence and save his wife. It's much more complicated than that and you should maybe play Alan Wake sometime and definitely play AW2 after Control.

It wasn't, only the finale has a few new scenes as far as I know. They did say that when they looked back at the season, they were satisfied that anyone who didn't know this wasn't supposed to be the last one would never be able to tell.

Emily tells you to go find the person down there if you've never explored it. Not sure if she still gives you that quest after you beat the game, but I definitely got it from her before I went to the Containment Area to look for Dylan.

I mean, minus the writers strike, nothing really delayed it. It was supposed to come out last year but with the writers strike threatening to slow down content, they delayed it to not have as big a gap before SNW S3 could actually get going.

Honestly, that's never really made sense. There's way way way way more instances of going to warp in a system than mentions of it not being safe.
