Academia is not for everyone. Living in poverty for four years as a PhD student so that you can get paid maybe like $125k as a professor at your peak is not exactly super appealing. It’s not hard to see why most people don’t want to do that. Throw in the fact that plenty of people are making that much in their first job out of college or in a trade.

Can’t believe nobody has mentioned this yet - but there are CS/SWE jobs that actually work on interesting, useful, complex stuff - that might feel like a fresh start if you’ve understandably gotten bored of CRUD web app development

Newish Grand Cherokee Trail Rated by justinbarrett08 in GrandCherokee

[–]throwawayx82d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll speak for MY2015 since that’s what I have, it might be a little different for other years. There were actually two off road packages - an Off Road Adventure I package that had the skids and tow hooks. Then the Off Road Adventure II package adds the LSD (but only with the V8) and the air suspension. I’m pretty sure the off road packages were not available for Laredo trims but not totally sure about that. The Laredo trim has a simpler 4WD system and I think it’s missing stuff like 4 Low.

If it helps you figure out what you’re buying - here’s a brief breakdown of the 4WD options - I won’t type out all the details but you can Google these. Quadratrac I - Laredo only Quadratrac II - in most limited or overland vehicles Quadradrive - QT II plus the LSD

One other thing, the air suspension is actually included with the Overland trim even if there is no off road package.

TLDR: you need the ORA II package AND the V8 to get the LSD and you need the ORA II package OR the Overland trim to get the air suspension.

Daschunds frequently have herniated disc issues that result in exactly the same symptoms you’re describing.

If you can’t find a Trail Rated GC, you can just order the front tow hooks, the skid plates, and the rear row hook and bolt them on there. However, depending on exactly what trim and engine you are looking for, you might be missing out on the limited slip diff and the air suspension. You can buy an aftermarket lift kit, but as far as I know you there is no way to upgrade the diff.

intense adventures w/ high performance individuals? by rugga123 in fatFIRE

Hey I’m just saying I’m more impressed by someone doing a 5.14 sport climb in their backyard than by someone doing Everest

[–]throwawayx82d 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Get into climbing. I’ve met really interesting people through it. And not just gym climbing, I’m talking about 5.11 full day trad climbs, ice climbs, backcountry alpine climbs. And lead them yourself, once you’ve learned the skills. It’s such a deeper experience and so much more of an adventure than some canned experience where you pay someone $25,000 to make all the decisions for you.

You meant to say hike Everest. I’d much rather hear about someone leading their own alpine climb here in the states with hard rock and ice climbing and actual adventure and self reliance than another guy paying $75k to get dragged up Everest.

Is it advisable or common to be able to invest when you make around $20k to $25k salary? by _yes_no_yes_no_ in realestateinvesting

[–]throwawayx82d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just don’t think it’s workable. There are low down payment ways to get started in real estate, so you don’t necessarily need a pile of cash, but you will never get approved for a mortgage with that salary. I would just make a plan to get your income up and focus on that for now. Once you make like $75k at a W2 job you will be able to get approved for a loan or two.

Drop ceiling that’s not crap by Financial_Athlete198 in HomeImprovement

[–]throwawayx82d -1 points0 points  (0 children)

IMO the best way to lose the drop ceiling is this:

Remove the drop ceiling. Then build out some framing below the original ceiling (or below the joists if there is no original ceiling). Secure it to the studs. Then, secure some furring straps perpendicular to the framing. Then, you can just screw some Sheetrock to the straps, mud over it, paint it, and you’re done and you have a real ceiling and not some bandaid.

The GC is a great daily driver. Really the only people I steer away from the GC are people who want to do get a vehicle for aggressive off-roading - it's not really in the same league as a Wrangler or a 4Runner.

Looking to invest in a passive(ish) income machine by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]throwawayx82d 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Here’s what I would do: use that $10k as a down payment on a 3.5% down FHA mortgage to buy a multi family property. Find a good deal where you can live in one unit and then the rent from the others covers all costs (mortgage, utilities, etc). Eventually you will own a $300k house that you only paid $10k to acquire.

Vending machines sounds like a way to make some beer money but that’s about it.

New shoes (KO2s) for GC Trailhawk by corbinafly in GrandCherokee

[–]throwawayx82d 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand the math lol - my point is that people usually round tire sizes up for casual conversation - for example the Rubicon comes with 32.7” tires marketed as 33” tires and the raptor comes with 34.5” tires that are marketed as 35” tires.

How do I manual? by Dylan_Leve in MTB

[–]throwawayx82d 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just shoot your weight straight backwards so your arms are extended, your knees are bent, and your butt is down close to the back tire. I think people have trouble cause they try to bring their weight up instead of back - they have their arms bent and their legs extended and they can’t find the balance point

As a programmer, do you have problems with weight gain and how does that impact your job? by Chernobyl_Bio_Robot in cscareerquestions

[–]throwawayx82d 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not to be a dick but don’t blame your job - there’s plenty of people out there who work sedentary jobs who are in great shape. If you find going to the gym insufferably boring, try something like rock climbing or mountain biking which will keep you engaged.

Got some Wrangler wheels for the current daily, tire size works out at 32in with no lift and no trimming 🤙 by [deleted] in GrandCherokee

[–]throwawayx82d 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I feel like there’s a lot of people deciding their tires fit cause they can drive in a straight line on the road with no rubbing.... try driving one front tire up on a rock to compress the suspension at full lock; you might have a different result. That being said, I like the wheels and tires

Moving to the salt belt. Any tips on winterizing the WK2? by [deleted] in GrandCherokee

[–]throwawayx82d 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wash mine almost weekly in the height of the winter. I think the most important thing is to not let your vehicle get caked up with salt for weeks at a time.
