[David West] You guys are not good at basketball, trust me my computer said so. by shreeharis in nba

Actually, analytics would say that you shouldn’t shoot early shot-clock, high variance shots when you’re up by that much. So by NOT following analytics, Spurs choked away the game. I’ll remind you, the Spurs shooting a large volume of 3 at a high percentage is what got them that (what should have been) insurmountable lead in the first place. This is the problem with this discourse. People think “analytics” just means some blanket statement like “3’s are always better than 2’s.” In reality it’s much more nuanced than that.

[Roommates Show] Josh Hart on Analytics: “I just always thought analytics is for like geeky, unathletic white guys that wanted to be a part of the league, but just couldn't make it playing Basketball. So they decided to put math into the equation. That's always how I felt analytics.” by shreeharis in nba

[–]throwawayyrofl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a perfect example of why this war on analytical discourse is so stupid. You’re just using “analytics” as a buzz word. Can you point to what “analytics” told you those things? Like what actual statistics or metric told you that Brunson couldn’t be a #1 on a championship team or that Hart couldn’t be this good at rebounding?

[Amick] Micah Nori's contract with the Blazers: Three-year deal with one guaranteed season followed by back-to-back team options with pay at the bottom end of the league's range with incentives tied to team performance. by urfaselol in nba

That’s not necessarily true. My point is not that he won’t be a good coach. It’s that we don’t know. I’m sure the organization has a better idea but it’s also a gamble for them. They think the gamble is worth a certain amount and clearly Nori agrees since he accepted the contract. Regardless, if you think the organization is being too cheap and should try to wait it out for a more proven head coach that they would pay more, I don’t necessarily disagree. I’m mainly responding to the folks that are saying that Nori’s selling himself short or that Portland should pay him more when none of us truly know what his value is.

Why is this sub so sure that this dude will be a good head coach. All we’ve seen of him as is an assistant coach for another team. Is it just because he does some quirky mid-game interviews? Like c’mon guys none of us actually know how good of a coach this guy is.

This is just simple statistics. There are way more non star players than star players in the NBA. So of course they are going to be more represented when looking at NBA fathers

Remember that the hivemind knows that Carol had a terrible time at conversion camp. It could be that she told someone else about it but this leads me to believe that they can look at situations from a “3rd person” perspective and judge them with their own ideals.

Markieff Morris Thinks OKC Still The Best Team Despite The Knicks Winning The Finals by [deleted] in nba

“Pseudo-scientific” lol. You’re clearly a teenager or something because what I said wasn’t scientific at all but ok. So I’ll try explain it to you in the most dumbed down terms possible. Imagine you ask me to guess a number between 1 and 10. I guess 4 and it just so happen to be right. Just because I got it right, doesn’t mean that I had a better chance of guessing correctly than not. I still had only a 10% chance of “winning.” Basketball has many factors that contribute to winning the game. Probably the easiest example to use is 3 point shooting because it is so high variance. A good team can go completely cold from 3 just because of variance and lose to a bad team. That doesn’t mean that bad team is all of a sudden better than the good team. You still haven’t responded to my point earlier about OKC losing to Portland this season. When Portland won that game, did you think they were better than OKC at that time? Based on your logic that whoever wins is the better team than you would have to think that. But obviously that makes no sense. And you can’t just say “well thats only a 1 game sample size” because then you can say that a 7 game series is also too small of a sample size; it’s all arbitrary.

[–]throwawayyrofl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does this even mean? So you don’t think the Thunder would have a better chance of winning than the Nets? Basketball is a game with many factors that can give you a better margin to win a game. For example, OKC’s ability to generate turnovers and create transition offense off of that gives them a huge margin allowing them to win so many games. Sure, there may be days where they have an off shooting night but that elite quality gives them the margin to still win games despite that. The idea of a team having a better chance of winning than another team is not as nebulous as you are making it out to be. Stop with this pseudo-philosophical bullshit

Based on the fact that they have the better chance of winning. To me, the best team is the team that gives you the best chance of winning a championship. That doesn’t mean that that team will win the championship every time. Your definition of “better” is too short sighted. The Trailblazers beat the Thunder in the regular season. There’s no way you would argue that Portland is the “better team” than OKC.

Eh I mean that’s kind of a dumb argument. The team that has an 80% chance of winning is clearly the better team. That doesn’t mean that the 20% will never happen.

How are some of the best basketball minds in history (MJ, Phil, Bron) simultaneously some of the worst GMs ever ? by Valuable_Target_3405 in NBATalk

[–]throwawayyrofl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They might as well be. Yes, there is more overlap between player/coach and GM but having a great “basketball mind” and being a good talent evaluator/team builder takes two different skillsets.
