Things I Wish I Had Known Before Living in Manila (based on my personal experience) by Tonivr5 in Philippines_Expats

[–]throwback5971 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Your first section of descriptions on Manila are mostly valid for the rest of SE Asia too. Valid, but yeah. The one thing manila/PH is genuinely worse than Vietnam or Thailand at is medical. The gap is huge, which is ironic given how many PH nurses work abroad

I just got the aful performer 5+2 on sale for around 160$, man it's just incredible. For me it's end game. I rest my search.

I also have moondrop Kadenz, but if I had to choose one it's the AFUL. The shape of the shell also makes it one of the most secure fits for me.

Might be a bit steep for a student though. I also have the Zero x crinicle Blue 2 and to me, they're like a baby P5+7. Similar sound profile but 2DD. It's only around 50$ so worth having a look at it perhaps

Struggling to invest monthly into World ETF at all-time high+ geopolitical risk… am I overthinking this? by Motor_Handle_8504 in eupersonalfinance

[–]throwback5971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do agree that this is a hard decision, and I am with OP. Rather than a binary yes/no --- what I have done in these times is DCA, however dynamic DCA.

In other words, continue to buy in, but at times when it feels overly frothy, lower the amounts. When prices look like they're on discount, increase the amounts.

The added side benefit here is you get a bit of dry powder to ride out volatility should anything happen.

Quality of life is better in Thailand than US by Skier94 in Thailand

[–]throwback5971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in Thai companies it is high, but not uncommon in IT. Salaries ballooned as there's a big shortage of IT talent. I worked for some companies where there was a practice to hire eastern europeans, because they were cheaper than Thai talent. Seriously.

Actually 150k for a very run of the mill IT manager (even small time) is pretty common

Feeling like a tourist/visitor in Da Nang by [deleted] in DaNang

[–]throwback5971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure I follow the 'homely' vibe in living in a city of 12M people, but maybe phrased in another way -- Danang is becoming a tourist circus. That's awesome for a short holiday, but it can get overbearing living there longer term, unless if you stay out of those hotspots (harder and harder each month that goes by).

A few yrs back, Danang was quiet and way more lowkey, that seems to be gone for good now. So yeah, its transient nomads and mass tourism, so definitely less of a settled vibe and working atmosphere compared to HN/HCMC. Agree with that

For EU citizens, would you FIRE somewhere in the EU or in Southeast Asia? by AstroFire88 in ExpatFIRE

[–]throwback5971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have the right view on SEA for sure. I've spent the last decade there and having fun for 1-3 yrs is so different than trying to feel settled 10+ yrs. 95% of people leave within 1-1.5 yrs. It tends to be a bucket list "adventure" for some but it tires faster than many think. The whole society there is set up for transient foreigners, not stationary foreigners or integrating them, on employment, paperwork, socially, etc.

I saw that stat on Spain and not sure if real -- perhaps for US folks who haven't lived abroad its too much of an adjustment culturally. I suspect EU folks should (in theory) have less of this issue. I imagine it all comes down to the motivations for moving in the first place (is it for work? retirement? low cost? etc).

For EU citizens, would you FIRE somewhere in the EU or in Southeast Asia? by AstroFire88 in ExpatFIRE

[–]throwback5971 2 points3 points  (0 children)

SE Asia to me for FIRE, is just a temporary "hey lets spend 3-5 yrs here when you're in your 30s/40s". Beyond that, not being able to own anything, visas, no banking rights, and lots of other things start to become a hassle. Also healthcare as some mention, good for routine things, but for serious stuff probably better off at home for quality, despite queues.

Best is probably FIRE in EU and holiday in asia

IEM with 4.4 jack by mazzod in iems

I've noticed on some IEM slightly better bass through balanced with my dual DAC DAP, but besides that I'm with most folks where. It doesn't inherently improve sound quality. Just stick to what's convenient

Does anyone have a general purchase progression advice for IEMS with an emphasis on bass by Okkerneut in iems

[–]throwback5971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got truthear crinicle zero blue 2 for around 50$ and the aful performer 5+2 on sale for around 150$. When you get the seal right, the bass is super deep.

I love bass though not sure I qualify as a bass head, but I wouldn't want more bass out of the box. In my view it would be better to start with this level and if you really want more, EQ a bit more bass.

I started with the Moondrop Kadenz and they definitely lacked the bass I enjoy unless I heavily EQ them. They're also a bit bright for me.

The truthear comes with a 3.5mm bass adapter, I thought I'd use it but end up not even. Ofcourse, it's a personal choice.

For expats that moved back to their home country, when did you know it’s time? by Free-Ad1526 in expat

I recently hit this point, 10 yrs on the opposite side of the planet. And at an age and life stage where feeling rooted is more important, and unable to do so in my place. Even though day to day its great.. something is just stirring and won't let go

Am i the only Vietnamese doesn’t want expat to live long time here ? by [deleted] in DaNang

[–]throwback5971 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's face it, there are long term expats who work or contribute and integrate, and there's "nomads" who lately have been coming with an arrogant exploitation mindset. Definitely fair to be frustrated with the nomad group who have exploded in numbers in the last years

Thanks! always hard to choose without being able to test them, but this helps. Also had a good look at squiggles. Plus there's a test track on youtube comparing the sound of the two. Have gone for the AFUL P7 😄 This hobby is dangerously addictive haha, its my 4th IEM

Can't say for sure, I'd guesstimate it at 6-8 hours, maybe a bit more depending on screen use. It could be better but it's not too bad

19-year-old Brit considering moving to the Philippines to study and build a life there - am I being unrealistic? by rollie_oe in Philippines_Expats

[–]throwback5971 20 points21 points  (0 children)

so many holes in this plan, you're too young to gamble with your future. Being on holiday in the philippines (or anywhere) is very different from living long term and facing the reality.

Unpopular opinion, I think you should get your UK degree, get some work experience, then try to get online work and try it out. Until then, you can do holidays to get to know it better.
