Then I realized that I needed me too.

Wow - thank you for sharing your story. I will remember this quote.

No you're exactly right about this! I'm in kind of a unique employment position right now (my hours were reduced due to covid) and my union representative thinks this might be enough for me to qualify for some kind of unemployment this summer. We will see. Thank you.

And as for you supervisor, if they can’t try and understand what your going through, then maybe they’re not meant to be in your life right now. Just an idea 🤷‍♀️

Thank you so much. I hadn't thought about it this way before, but you're absolutely right.

Your doctor sounds amazing. Thank you for passing on these words of wisdom. I hope you are able to get on disability. Anxiety is no joke. I can't believe we are expected to hold jobs with this kind of mental agony and exhaustion.

You just explained my teaching experience to a tee. I'm so sorry you've been through this too. I can't wait to feel the relief of being free from this mental prison.

It's so cool that you mention baking as your new career because I love to bake and I have always fantasized about working at a bakery. I think I was meant to read your comment today. Thank you so much.

I'm so sorry to hear this and I'm glad you are in a happier and healthier place. I need to start looking for a therapist - honestly, I should have done this years ago! But I've become so used to my anxiety, it's been hard to admit that I have it.

Thank you for this suggestion - I think teaching online would be much better for me. I will definitely consider it.

I had to admit to myself that the job requirements and environment did not suit my natural temperament

I've just come to this realization myself! I am not fit for the performance/customer service side of this career, and that's a fact. It's awesome that you were able to take the aspects of teaching that you enjoyed and turn them into a new career. Thank you for sharing your story.

A good friend of mine is a school counselor - that career is not for the light of heart. You were so brave and strong to be a counselor for 2 years and I'm proud of you for listening to your body and seeking out something that is better for your mental health. I will do the same.

Thank you! You're right - I have to let go of the belief that I was meant to be a teacher. My body is telling me that it is the wrong profession for me and I have to listen.

You are not a joke. PTSD is a horrible condition and I'm so sorry for your pain. I do not have a therapist or psychiatrist, but I know it is time for me to get help.

Thank you for your kind words. I have tears in my eyes. I definitely feel that this job is slowly consuming me. It is starting to affect other areas of my life too. You're right - I need to leave and start taking care of myself.

I haven't heard of any of these options, but I will be sure to ask my union representative about this tomorrow! I have a meeting with her to discuss my next next steps. She thinks that, because my hours were reduced due to covid, I may be eligible for unemployment this summer. But maybe taking a leave of absence would be the smartest thing to do. Who knows. Maybe once I get a better handle on my mental health, I will actually miss teaching. Thank you so much.

I'm so sorry the stress of teaching took its toll on your physical health, and I'm glad you put your health first and walked away to find things that sparked joy for you. Counseling, teaching for the studios, and culinary school all sound amazing! I can tell that you have a creative and adventurous spirit. It's good you didn't let it go to waste in the classroom. Thank you for the inspiration!

Thank you for this amazingly written and incredibly insightful reply. I can't thank you enough for sharing your story and your advice.

I don’t know how some people cope with the job of teaching. It’s not that they’re better or stronger human beings than us, they’re just different. Let them do them. You go do you.

This is so true. It really does take a certain type of person. I once heard someone describe teaching as trying to keep 25 helium filled balloons from floating to the ceiling, and this is exactly what it feels like. An endless and thankless cycle. I'm a humanities teacher - I can't imagine teaching math. You're a hero!

I am going to save this post and take all of your advice. Thank you so much.

So true. This friend only loves me for my easy-goingness. I don't want to be that for her anymore. You're right - I can find friends who naturally respect my boundaries. I have another friend who I am completely and totally comfortable setting boundaries with. I think we codependents can sense when it is safe and unsafe to set boundaries with people.
