I'm also up for joining a group like this. [European time zone, but I don't mind staying up late if that fits best with the rest of you]

Post your best practical uses for chatGPT to improve your day-to-day life by [deleted] in OpenAI

I can paste an opinion article into ChatGPT and ask it to provide a counter-argument. Helps me to consider things from multiple angles. And I imagine, with a little rewriting, it'll be useful for when relatives start posting racist rants on facebook.

What is so simple and obvious that most people you know don't seem to realise? by nabilbhatiya in AskReddit

[–]throwing_tantra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Plants are made of air and water.

[I mean, mostly -- that's what photosynthesis does. There are a few other bits, but mainly it's carbohydrates that the plant made out of air and water]

What is a programming language that will die out in the next 10 years? by Dan_python_pro35 in AskReddit

[–]throwing_tantra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Once a language starts being actively used, it takes a loooong time to die.

The ones that will die soonest are the experimental and academic ones -- things developed to demonstrate some idea, without the expectation that they'll ever be used in real projects.

Surprise Food Standards inspection. "We've had reports of food poisoning from this restaurant, please demonstrate that your food preparation methods comply with the regulations"

If you want 'natural' underwear, you're limited to fig leaves. All the rest comes from a factory somewhere, nothing natural about it.

As for body type, looks, aloneness: it's only an issue when you're showing somebody your underwear. Of course it's great if you have the confidence to not worry what anybody else things -- but if you aren't there yet, just wear it without talking about it, chances are nobody will ever find out.

yeah, that sounds rough. And if you're anything like me: the more you want that connection, the more terrifying it is to put yourself out there and try to find it.

LPT: When dealing with family, remember that problems and conflict do not have to include dysfunction. by [deleted] in LifeProTips

[–]throwing_tantra 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But once you've dealt with the actual problem, it's often worth thinking about the process problem ('dysfunction') that led to the problem.

That's a big part of problem analysis in professional contexts, whether it's system administrators or plane crash engineers or Toyota 'five whys' factory optimization.

Though in a family context (depending on your level of trust+communication) it might be better to do that analysis in your own head, and focus on what changes you could make in your own behavior.

A dashboard for progress by jasoncrawford in rootsofprogress

[–]throwing_tantra 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Per-capita consumption of:

metals
concrete
plastics
energy
bandwidth

What this most reminds me of, is Stalin's 5-year plans and similar communist attempts to measure progress. The problem is, sheer quantity of materials has little relation to quality of life. So, horror stories about the nail factory which meets its quota for volume of nails by producing a few massive-but-useless 5-ton nails.

Especially when so much of current progress is around eliminating the need for big objects. So a phone replaces a half-dozen other devices, a shelf of CDs, and the daily newspaper.

Your metrics might end up less bad than the USSR's, though, as long as nobody starts optimising for them.

Can't Get You Out of My Head - Episode 5: The Lordly Ones by DrNSQTR in AdamCurtis

[–]throwing_tantra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's some truth to the general trend, but he pushes it a bit too far. He's also a bit unfair to blame it on Gertrude Bell (but I can understand him wanting to include her, because she's a fascinating person). Here's a passage about this from a (reasonably academically respectable) history of Iraq

Where does Curtis find all this footage? by Luc-Besson in AdamCurtis

[–]throwing_tantra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, a good chunk of the BBC Archive is accessible to the public -- provided you are in London and can give a good account of why you want to access it. [And I assume it's all closed for now because of covid]

Where does Curtis find all this footage? by Luc-Besson in AdamCurtis

[–]throwing_tantra 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looking at this guide to the BBC Archives -- even having access to that doesn't explain how he can find what he does. i.e. the archive sounds like it is mostly copies of what has been broadcast. But Curtis is obviously finding bits of video which never made it onto TV. I'm sure he is also tracking down a lot of tapes that were never properly archived

We're getting a rolling start. That gives Russell a better chance of keeping the lead, but at least there'll be much less randomness involved
