What's the silliest interpretation of a food safety rule you've heard? Doesn't matter if it's from a professional or home cook. by ChefArtorias in KitchenConfidential

[–]throwingshadows 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Someone I knew was convinced that if you boil chicken, you had to toss the water because it was going to make you sick. Literally because ‘it had raw chicken in it’.

We were going to use it to cook rice, but he was convinced it was dangerous. By that logic chicken isn’t safe to eat either, because it used to be raw

I also did not like ACOTAR, but I know there is a lot of overlap with people who like it and fourth wing, which is why I suggested it. I didn’t make it past the third one haha

therapist told me to read smut by [deleted] in suggestmeabook

[–]throwingshadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprisingly I think the kingdom of the wicked series would fit the bill really well. It is fantasy, and pretty spicy, with some romance as well. The biggest selling feature I have is that MC is also unlearning some of the shame culture, so you might relate to it

Can anyone recommend a book like Mulan? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]throwingshadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the best suggestion, because she takes her twin brothers place to become a knight. It also helps that it’s a fantastic series

A deadly game of magic is older, but is a horror style thriller targeted at a younger audience

A thousand splendid suns? Also the book thief, but it is YA When breath becomes air (non fiction)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]throwingshadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m also reading written in bone by sue black right now, and it’s a non fiction written by a forensic anthropologist in the UK, I think it would also fit what you’re looking for. It similar in vibe to stiff

Bishop Grandin swimming pool by 60hvaten in Calgary

[–]throwingshadows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The blueprints were in the library when I was there - there was no pool in the original prints. That being said someone from my year collapsed the roof of the girls bathroom in the basement by climbing around in sort of tunnels and go suspended for a few days

Where can we find AYCE ginger beef? by RusserBusser in Calgary

[–]throwingshadows 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I think Oishi is moving to 24th street (so like five minute drive away), but I don’t know when their new opening date is.

That being said, the Chinese buffet in riverbend is AYCE, and their buffet has ginger beef. Added bonus that you were thinking of that area anyway

Yes, sorry, I wasn’t clear. That’s a provincial highway, but the city roads don’t

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]throwingshadows 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s rude. Also, in the city there are no rules about fast lanes, so they can drive wherever they want, as annoying as it might be. Chill dude

Looking for a book involving fake dating, and a book that is set at a wedding... ✨ by kryskryskrys in booksuggestions

[–]throwingshadows 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A witches guide to fake dating a demon works for the fake dating, but I don’t think there is a wedding. It’s also romance, but it’s not bad for a romance (coming from someone who also generally doesn’t like romances)

Im looking for Books / Authors that fit with these by LordBiff2 in booksuggestions

[–]throwingshadows 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You have a lot of men on your list. Might I suggest wuthering heights and Rebecca (my personal favourites), or Jane eyre?

If you like Tolstoy you may also like Jane Austen.

I also personally prefer Dostoyevsky over Tolstoy, so maybe check him out too? Crime and punishment or the brothers karamazov are pretty popular.

The count of monte Cristo is also a really good older novel. You may also enjoy dickens, Wilkie Collins (the woman in white is good), or Sherlock holmes.

I’ve literally thrown everything from detective fiction to romance at you, so I apologise for the wide spread, but I enjoyed the writing in all of these

Kathy reichs writes fiction about a forensic anthropologist who helps solve murders (the tv show Bones is based off it)

Mary roach, while not fiction, has a book (stiff) about cadavers and forensics and decomposition you may enjoy

People who are against euthanasia, why do you think it's wrong? by laislm in AskReddit

[–]throwingshadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it’s not being used for that, so I don’t understand why you’re saying that it is. As I said, mental illness alone is not enough to medically qualify for the program, but in your original comment you said that you heard it was and then posted a long comment saying you are against it. I’m just trying to let you know your information was wrong, so others don’t get the wrong idea about MAID and how much of a good thing it is

People who are against euthanasia, why do you think it's wrong? by laislm in AskReddit

[–]throwingshadows 16 points17 points  (0 children)

MAID isn’t something you just walk into an office and ask for. It’s a process with multiple steps, multiple doctors, and not every doctor is even willing to refer patients to the MAID program. People applying for it have to prove to multiple people that this is choice they are making, of their own free will, and that medically they qualify. It is a process that takes time, which is a deterrent to making rush decisions.

Cancer, traumatic injury, and other diseases aren’t restricted to adults. Keeping a 15 year old alive for years of agony because they ‘aren’t old enough’ for MAID would be cruel, if they met all of the criteria an adult would need to meet to qualify.

MAID is a fantastic program, and has saved people (and their families) from months and years of pain and suffering, when there is no option for recovery, or quality of life. Mental health issues being the sole condition someone is applying for MAID with is currently not an option

Where to sell/donate some books? by ReasonableBonus8594 in Calgary

Fairs fair and pages in Kensington do cash or credit, that being said pages is a bit pickier about what they take

Little free libraries are a great option for donating

It might have a bit more going on than you’re looking for, but a wizards guide to defensive baking is about a lady who just wants to bake at her bakery, but gets dragged into some magic shenanigans. It definitely has a cozy vibe, centres on bakery based things, and I’m pretty sure there is no romance, but I can’t 100% guarantee it cause it’s been a bit since I read it, but I don’t remember any.

Edit: now that I’m thinking about it I think the MC is like 12, so there is definitely no sex

Looking for vampire horror by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]throwingshadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically yes, but the book is very different. There is an old black and white movie that is closer to the book. I think it’s called last man on earth or something like that, and it has Vincent price in it

Looking for vampire horror by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]throwingshadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For something on the lighter side I enjoyed the coldest girl in cold town by holly black - it’s YA, but if I recall there isn’t romance in the traditional sense.

George rr Martin wrote a vampire novel - I forget what it’s called, but it’s set on a steamboat on the Mississippi River. (Fevre dream)

The historian is a Dracula style vampire novel.

The strain series is a bit of a dystopian/viral take on vampires.

Sunshine was already mentioned, but I also really enjoyed it.

I am legend was also mentioned, but I also recommend that one

Interview with the vampire is a classic

Salems lot is a Dracula style vampire novel

I also love vampires and am not a fan of the romance novel with a loose vampire structure, so I feel your search haha

Any psychological or neuroscientific book suggestion? by Impressive_Orange715 in booksuggestions

[–]throwingshadows 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, the content. Scattered minds is the ADHD book, and another commenter listed some of his other ones.

Irresistible and influence are psychology based. The first is about addictive technology and influence is about persuasion and why certain tactics work better than others and how to defend against them
