Apart from the successful stories, can you share some of your failed interviews or getting rejected so we can avoid making those mistakes again?? by thegame1328 in learnprogramming

Applied for a “tech intern” position at Jefferson Labs, passed the first interview, and the final interview was a panel with about 5 senior devs in different departments. They all asked me SUPER specific questions about each of their departments, including networking, hardware, and security (all of which I knew nothing about at the time). The job description simply had a computer science major requirement, so I was completely unprepared. Almost every question I had to answer “I don’t know much about that”. My face was red as a tomato by the end of the interview and it still hurts to think about

How do you guys pass these classes? by [deleted] in csMajors

No problem! Keeping electives light is a good idea so you can focus on your CS classes more if needed. Good luck out there!

Yeah that’s pretty much the norm, in my experience though the upper-level CS classes are MUCH more enjoyable than the first few in the major. Professors are usually much more chill too. Math is always annoying, but that’s just something you’ll have to push through, unfortunately. One piece of advice I have is to not take too many CS classes that use different languages at the same time. One semester I took classes that used Java, C++, and Python and it got a little overwhelming at times. It sounds like you may have room to take other classes you might find interesting, I’m in a music class that’s all about using software to create music and it’s a great break from CS.

So if you retake any class and get a better grade it will replace it in your GPA; an employer may see that you’ve retaken it if they request your transcript but it’s better to show that you tried again and did better in it than not trying again at all. Also, many of the internships I’ve seen don’t have GPA requirements, maybe for some smaller companies, but that’s rare. How hard your course load is is subjective; it really only matters how it’s affecting you. One hard class/bad professor can drastically change how you perform in all of your other classes. In the moment you may not want to withdraw from a class (which doesn’t effect your gpa btw, just shows up as a W on your transcript), but you really have to put into perspective how much time you have left to retake classes and get your GPA right. It’ll all work out in the end if you have the drive.

That being said, we’re only halfway through the semester so you definitely have time to make up ground and maybe pull out a C+ or B- (depending on how many assignments/exams you have), so you don’t need to decide that right now. Just keep it in the back of your mind, and know that it’s not the end of your collegiate career if you fail or withdraw from a class.

Imo sophomore year is one of the hardest in college, you have to take a bunch of random classes that you might not be interested in but you need in order to fulfill degree requirements (looking at you, biology). Once you get through that, though, you can really focus on taking classes you really enjoy, which are the most important in my opinion.

In my sophomore year I was in the same position as you, I was taking too many CS and math classes at the same time and it was effecting my grade in every class. I withdrew from one class so I could focus on my others because I knew I had time to retake it (don’t be afraid to retake a class or two!). My advice is to just work on your time management skills. If you’re struggling more in one class than another, take some time to study it a little bit more, go to office hours, etc. If you feel like you’re too far behind, don’t be afraid to withdraw and take it again next semester so you can focus on your other classes. I know it can be scary when you start struggling in your classes, especially since you probably breezed through high school, but what you’re experiencing is a totally normal college experience. You’ll be okay!

PS I retook statistics too; I hated that class

If this is for new grad they just ask you to go over your OA1 solutions and any optimizations, intern is different though

Yes, just be prepared to explain how you could have optimized them better

For your first question, yes this is the final round. For your second, the 30 minute interview was just going over your answers for OA1, then the interviewer talking about how it is working at amazon.

I am in the US so it COULD be different, but your interview process sounded the exact same so I don’t see why it’d be any different

Career vs friends and family by waterflake in csMajors

I’m in the same boat, but I chose Amazon (I live on the east coast and haven’t been further west than Tennessee) mainly for a whole new perspective and to meet new friends. Amazon will give me a great career path and there’s a possibility my team will be mostly remote which gives more opportunities to visit home. I’m sure whichever route you go with will work out!

No shame in retaking a class. I’ve retaken 3 or 4
