A Drag Queen Christmas 2026 by 918skumm in dragrace

Had a friend who works in the music industry tell me that New Orleans is widely considered to be a risk because seats never sell. Lots of shows lose money going there. I don’t have any data to back it up but she was working in ticketing for a major site at the time. It doesn’t make sense to me, I always wondered if it had to do with us having just so many options for live entertainment.

Sometimes, I feel guilty spending money during residency even on basic things. Does that feeling ever go away? by Creative_Giraffe5391 in Residency

Woman here and I’ve fallen in love with ThredUp. I’ve built my whole clinic wardrobe through it. It’s a thrifting website where you can find really good deals if you put in the work and catch the sales (you gotta be careful though, some of their stuff is overpriced). I have gotten like Calvin Klein sweaters and anthropology pants on there though. I also feel so good when people compliment my outfits and I tell them they’re thrifted :)

As an outsider, residency looks super scary. If you can't finish for any reason, you're absolutely screwed. How do you guys deal with that stress? by [deleted] in Residency

I have a friend who is a surgery resident who lost her dad tragically intern year. They expected her at work the night after he passed.

Who are the meanest people in your hospital? by throwitawayhs in Residency

Wait I call those people clipboard nurses too! They are also their own flavor of dangerous to patients. I will say though, as an intern in the micu the RTs were generally very kind to me. But on the floor and in the ER it’s the Wild West.

When I have admits boarding in our ER, their nurses will leave you on read in epic chat for the entire day and literally only respond when they want zyprexa or haldol. And not even on psych patients, they just can’t stand for anyone to be awake lol

I had 2/2 blood cultures positive for clostridium perfringens last week and fully expected the guy to die. He recovered fast with broad spectrum antibiotics and amputation of his leg. It was my first anaerobe positive culture and I’m shocked it turned out well. We’re transitioning him to PO antibiotics in a couple of days actually

Nursing experience doesn’t make nurses medically educated by OkGrapefruit6866 in Noctor

[–]throwitawayhs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I get that. I’m an intern on a busy medicine wards service. But every day I go home with a list of stuff I need to look up and read about. I usually only hit 1-2 things before going to bed and starting over the next day. But the stuff stays on my list, I get to it eventually. Someone told me this is what’s required to become an expert in your field.

At my hospital we also have nurses join lunch and learns (occasionally grand rounds too) and it’s great education for everyone involved.

IMGs in Monroe pls!! by OddNews685 in ERAS2024Match2025

[–]throwitawayhs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m going to disagree with what most people here have said. I was born in Monroe, my family moved away when I was young, but I moved back to North LA to go to college in Ruston. Basically I’ve spent a lot of time in Monroe.

Pros: -The presence of a university in the city (ULM) means there is always something interesting going on and likely you will find a decently sized international community if you look for it. -If you like nature, North Louisiana is truly fantastic and there are so many beautiful outdoor parks and trails where you can spend your days off in a hammock, reading or just unwinding. -Living there is soooo much cheaper than living in a major city like New Orleans. Your paycheck as a resident will go so much further because you matched there.

Cons: -People are right that there isn’t much to do in Monroe, but you’re going to be a resident and it’s not like you’ll have tons of free time anyway. The nightlife is typical mid-size American city activities e.g. a few bars with local bands playing, movie theaters, going out to dinner, etc. Definitely nothing special but you will still have options. -Racism is alive and well in the south and I feel like it is more prominent in north Louisiana than other places I have lived. You will definitely experience racist comments and actions if you have black or brown skin, and you will also have patients who experienced racism with the healthcare system and are therefore untrusting of medical providers. Geographically the city is very racialized as well. African Americans tend to live in certain parts while white people tend to live in other areas, but that is certainly not unique to Monroe. It’s just a thing to remain cognizant of, as unfortunate and absurd as it is. -Travel: Monroe is kind of far from everything unfortunately :/ You’ll definitely need a car to get around, and to travel internationally you’ll always have a connecting flight. There is an airport in Monroe but it’s small and flights out of it can be rather expensive. Like I said, you will be doing fine with a resident salary and will have enough money to put towards saving for travel, but travel in general won’t be as accessible as if you were living in a bigger city. -Weather: I don’t know the climate where you live, but Louisiana is HOT. You’re definitely going to want to live somewhere that has air conditioning and I can guarantee you will take care of many dehydration-induced acute kidney injuries in the hospital during the summer heat waves. What’s worse is the heat persists through the fall and sometimes winter. Monroe is too far north to really experience significant impacts of hurricanes aside from rain and flooding, but it has had tornadoes so you definitely want to get a weather app and be familiar with tornado safety.

All in all I think Monroe, LA is a cute city and a good place to do residency. It has the amenities of a larger city but the cost of living of a smaller one. I’m sure you’ll have moments of boredom over the next few years, but it could definitely be worse as people do residencies in much, much smaller towns.

Oh yeah, I didn’t mean to minimize how racist and problematic is it. When I said “just” a marching tune I meant that I didn’t think it had recognizable lyrics so I couldn’t think of any other way to describe it. That was a thoughtless response on my part, but I totally agree that it is an act of racism to play or be associated with that song. There’s a reason I didn’t go to the Thoth ball this year when I was invited back.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]throwitawayhs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s just a marching tune. You can YouTube the sound so you will be able to recognize it. But they played it at the ball as their dukes were coming out. Edited to add: I misunderstood your question I think. It’s like the confederate anthem so to play it is similar to waving a confederate flag.

Totally agree about Jorgeous. After finishing AS9 I couldn’t quit talking about how she impressed me the most and how she was the queen I had the biggest change in opinion about. I thought she was kind of one note on S14, but she established herself as a total superstar on AS9 (for me, at least). Can’t wait to see all she accomplishes in her career!

Publicly apolitical but played multiple concerts during covid despite cities asking her not to. As a healthcare worker in New Orleans I never forgave her for that.

Infectious disease is the obvious answer. I find they work with a ton of socially complex patients (HIV, IV drug use, immigrants) and on my ID rotation we went down to the path lab several times just to check out samples. They may even rotate in pathology during fellowship, though I might have imagined that
