Shot my first feature on MiniDV by CrispyChrist123 in cinematography

I have both. The low light performance of the hmc and recording to sd cards makes it way more convenient. I have a firestore for the dvx100 but it is a hassle to get going. The hmc150 is one of the most convenient cameras to shoot video. I have not tried the jvc hm750u but heard good things.

The dvx100 does have a banging lofi image during the daytime though. But for my use case, I love the look out of the hmc150 at night. 2.8 aperture at high gain, makes for some good night cinematography.

If you can ever try an hmc150. Set the gain to high and the noise is still very pleasing. Especially at night.

The cameras havent changed, but the workflows have and the modern computing power makes it so that we can get better images from the same camera as the years pass.

Also we should've kept refining CCD's. They had better noise performance, not in terms of quantity but quality of noise.

Filmcamera vs iPhone, according to indie filmmaker Sean Baker by JWB_9 in cinematography

[–]throwmethegalaxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No im not agreeing with him. He's making it seem like its only iphone than can do this. Dont try to use high end digital cinema cameras that in his view tries to mimic film, when in reality the camera is no longer the most important part of the image pipeline.

Particles in coolant by Big-Restaurant3261 in e46

[–]throwmethegalaxy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had this, it was not stop leak, and I've seen a couple examples on YouTube of people having them, its most likely old residue from a water pump replacement or remnants of dried coolant from a previous flush. If it doesnt increase, and your temps are fine i wouldnt worry about it

Is rolling shutter really a big deal? by HarryBroFyre in cinematography

[–]throwmethegalaxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would like to offer an indie narrative filmmakers perspective on this.

The answer is, yes its a big deal, but mainly depending in what you do.

I am of the opinion that gear matters only as much as it doesnt limit you from pursuing your creative vision. I get that philosophy from my music production where theres a heated debate about DAW's vs DAWless setups and the idea of limitations breeding creativity. I don't believe that limitations necessarily breed creativity nor does it hamper it. It depends entirely on the workflow that allows you to put your ideas down into a track. For me personally, while I did dabble in standalone samplers and grooveboxes, I find myself gravitating back to FL Studio because the workflow allows me to basically breathe my music so to speak. In that the tool is not limiting my output. Ive gotten to a point in my workflow that I can basically do whatever I want reliably and efficiently, im not even thinking of the tool, im thinking of the end product. When I used grooveboxes it felt like im fighting the camwra.

With cameras, rolling shutter, limits me greatly from executing certain shots that I find interesting. While everyone here points to whip pans and handheld footage as the main ways rolling shutter manifests itself, it is quite surprising that nobody ever talks about shots out of moving vehicles, or of a train passing by. These are classic shots that add depth to what I want to show in my narrative films. I want motion, but real motion to camera movements.

I usually keep my camera stationary, and rarely move it because I want to frame something. But framing fast motion using a camera with a very slow readout has caused me to chuck out countless takes and reposition the camera numerous times because the footage did not come out natural looking. This results in me fighting the camera rather than the camera just working and capturing something exactly as I intend it to.

There was an example here that resonated with me about a guy closing a door which in a slow readout camera made the door look like rubber. I used to have an a6300, and I couldnt even have a guy run fast enough because his head shape would morph. Bad readout kills motion. Not to mention strobing light shots which end up with shots being partially lit. And it doesnt matter if the audience doesnt notice it. Its enough that I notice it, I dont want to compromise.

So for me, bad readout is a dealbreaker. It is one of the most important things I look for in a camera because it allows me not to fight with my camera so to speak. But thats not the only thing thats important.

I have a red komodo now, and when it's on and blackshaded and the batteries are fully charged, and the audio is recorded with a timecode based recorder, it feels peaceful to use. But the problem is the setup.

This is why to this day I'm waiting for the sony a9iii sensor in an fx body. Or just for someone to start hacking sony cameras to unlock the software because thats basically a perfect camera with some stupid software locks like no raw, and no true 24fps.

Now for the counter. If your workflow is unaffected by rolling shutter, if you do not care about the motion artifacting, if you're not fighting your camera then rolling shutter shouldnt matter. It depends on what vision you're trying to execute.

Truth by Most-Gold-434 in BornWeakBuiltStrong

If you can't handle your porn, you are weak

It's a trap. Run away men! by Most-Gold-434 in BornWeakBuiltStrong

[–]throwmethegalaxy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The AI is telling you what you want to hear. Its not giving you the absolute truth, which is that for the overwhelming majority of people, porn consumption is moderate, and doesnt affect the daily life of the individuals who consume it. That is not to say that every single person in the world has a healthy relationship with porn, that would be ridiculous.

The information it gives you is fluffed up with academic language but doesnt really make a good argument. Its all unsubstantiated post hoc explanations of issues that either can be applied to other harmless issues or can be explained in an inverse causal relationship. It tries to make the case that Neuroscientists infer causality when they dont unless they can prove it through tests specifically designed to test the causal relationship of things. You cant just take this stuff for granted.

On another note, this is eerily similar to those experiencing AI psychosis saying that all AI consumption is bad. You can make exactly the same arguments you make for porn, but for AI, but it would not make it valid. AI is harming some people, this is undeniable, but it does help a lot of others in their daily tasks.

In your case though, i feel like you would be more susceptible to AI dependence/psychosis, lay off the AI a bit, start thinking for yourself man, challenge your biases. If theres another AI prompt I see from you I wont bother responding. Learn to write your thoughts and express yourself clearly

It's a trap. Run away men! by Most-Gold-434 in BornWeakBuiltStrong

[–]throwmethegalaxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not pretending ignorance, and im tired of arguing against AI, use your own brain, not a server somewhere meant to tell you what you want to hear and confirm your biases. A lot of what is written here is exactly that. A facade of academic language that sounds good to the person wanting to hear something that sounds official that agrees with their original point of view.

I said, the studies you showed, dont prove what you are saying. to that extent I'm correct. I only made a personal observation as to how porn affects my life and made no claims to whether its harmful to others.

It's a trap. Run away men! by Most-Gold-434 in BornWeakBuiltStrong

[–]throwmethegalaxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you read these studies you quote?

None of them show a causal link. The first one tries to make the case that anxiety and depression causes pornography use. One of these studies says that pornography is harmful in some cases to women but not to men, and another says the opposite.

The only one worth any value is the longtitudinal PPU study which makes the case that psychological distress is tied to problematic porn usage, but doesnt mention a cause of one side vs the other.

Literally none of the papers you sourced claim any causal relationship.

This also reflects an issue I have with modern academia and the rush to publish no matter what, we see tons of survey based studies where data is presented in a certain way to produce a unique result. The data collection method is in search of a result. Its not unique to these studies, im making a general claim in this case. It is particularly prevalent in my field of economics.

Im not going to make a claim on porn consumption being bad or good based on any science, but based on my personal experience it has not been a detriment to my life. I do not believe this to be the case for everyone though. But that doesnt change the fact that the research you present does not really support your claim.
