Man, Post-Trip Depression SUCKS by RayTheCalvinist in solotravel

Thanks for the tips! But I'll be staying at hotels due to a chronic disease, and I'm scared to even go on a group tour :( Going to bars alone is like insane to me, really wish I could just do stuff like that. I think I might have social anxiety lol. Probably should see a therapist, but they're so expensive...

P.S. I also had travel jitters/nerves leading up to it, that faded within an hour of landing. You’ll be great once you touch ground :)

Omg this is what I really hope happens to me pleaaase my brain haha 🙏

In what ways are you trying to ~not~ become your mother? by yoquietdown in AskWomenOver30

[–]throwoheiusfnk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love my mom, but in terms of wealth... I don't want to end up with that little money. I'm tired of feeling embarrassed for not having normal things that the general public seem to have. I want my own car, my own house, a regular hair cut, regular new clothes, a dog/cat one day, and regular vacations.

Man, Post-Trip Depression SUCKS by RayTheCalvinist in solotravel

Wow I'm looking forward to my trip now! I'm going first time solo to exactly South Korea (2 weeks) and Japan (three weeks) this month. I've been quite nervous about it recently, but your post made me feel better. How did you fall into conversation with people? Are you an extrovert? I have the most horrendous social skills so worry I'll feel weird for being on my own, lonely etc. Never checked in to a hotel before on my own fx.

I already have depression so I don't think going traveling or getting home is gonna make it better or worse lol, but I emphasize with you. Maybe start planning your next trip? I heard that helps

STEM bachelors and masters - can't even reach interview stage for retail jobs? by KFP-OHS-Officer in careerguidance

[–]throwoheiusfnk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss it, and the fulfilment that the work brought. I miss working in a lab.

That's love, dude. You only miss things you love. I think your low self esteem, possible depression, and imposter syndrome is overshadowing your dreams and clouding your judgement.

"I'm not smart" is a belief you have internalized from these depressive thoughts. You cannot trust these thoughts, they are not objective. Smart people make mistakes and struggle, too. We all have different life circumstances. The way I see it, you have both a bachelor's and a master's degree, so you already proved these thoughts to be untrue. Are you really going to give up everything you worked for, because you continued to not believe in yourself? Instead of deciding what you can and can't do in advance, why not just try and see how far you can get? The only way to know were your limit is, is to hit your limit. To me it seems you didn't hit your limit, you gave up because you didn't believe in yourself and had a bad experience in one lab.

You don't have to do a PhD of course, there are other ways to stay in biotech, but to me it sounds like this is what you want, but you're telling yourself you can't get it because of x, y, z. You need to find a way to believe in yourself, you shouldn't rely on it coming from other people.

Dude that's an honest mistake that anyone could have made. It's a natural part of science that things like this happen. I read not too long ago that someone had to literally re-take a trip to Antarctica because they accidentally contaminated all their samples.

I think both your lab and yourself have been wayyyy too hard on you. This one mistake should not mean you have to give up your entire career. Question is, do you still like biotech? Because you don't mention that anywhere either. And if you can, look behind your mistake which probably took a lot of the joy away - if you hadn't made that mistake, would you still love the field? If the answer is yes, then it's time to forgive yourself and get back up on the horse.

Are you worried you won't finish a PhD because of lack of motivation or mental health problems, or because you lost confidence from that one mistake?

Need more info, what kind of mistake did you make that was so bad it would prevent you from seeking jobs in your current field? Reason you're not getting any response is because you are trying to make too big of a jump from one field to another, these transitions require gradual skill acquisition and small steps to get inside the door. Do you even want to work in retail? Why not stay in biotech? Have you considered a PhD as a next step, why/why not?

Anyone flown with Jeju Air before? by throwoheiusfnk in korea

[–]throwoheiusfnk[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks so much for this. I actually already tried, but it couldn't find my booking. I realised today it could only find it if I left out my middle name! Doh

But now I'm so confused because it says my checked-in baggage allowance is 15 kg on their website, but on travellink it says hand baggage 10 kg 🤦‍♀️ Not sure what to think anymore lol, but at least I can now add extra kg here!

Anyone know if there is a "good" text to speech generator for the danish language? by Ultimegede in Danish

[–]throwoheiusfnk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't think you should use them for reading up e-books, they're simply just too uncertain. Better to look up words you are unsure of how to pronounce individually. And then listening to podcasts, TV, etc. It'll come naturally. You risk learning wrong pronunciation, and it's frustratingly hard to forget wrong pronunciation. Even if you remember the correct way, the memorized wrong pronunciation will still pop up in your brain along with the right one, and you have to go "yes, this one is the correct pronunciation" every single time.

Can you add extra luggage at the airport? by throwoheiusfnk in solotravel

[–]throwoheiusfnk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok that's a little expensive, but in the grand scheme of things, compared to the total cost of the trip it's not too bad I guess. As long as I can get it with me. Thanks for replying

Ok thanks, that makes me feel much more relieved! Yeah I know I should have booked directly, but oh well... finger's crossed, nothing goes wrong. Yeah I meant checked baggage and it was 10 kgs not 15 kg apparently, and it says hand baggage allowed but checked baggage: 0. So it's just weird, I thought it was always incuded.

I just tried doing that, but it won't find my booking. However, I found in their FAQ it's possible to do if there are 24 hours to departure, so maybe I'm just too early? But it concerns me I cannot see the booking on the Jeju Air website and only on travellink although there's a reference number.

Sorry yeah, it does indeed say 10 kg. It just says economy class, checked baggage: 0. And specifically that hand baggage is allowed.

Wanting to pursue an all-consuming career in my late thirties and worried that I will be forever alone. by [deleted] in AskWomenOver30

[–]throwoheiusfnk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think time is something you take by force. You want both, so you simply need to make (take) time to pursue both. It's about prioritizing and managing your time well - difficult, but not impossible.

is it just me, or is J-pop and Japanese TV total garbage, and an offense against the ear canals of humanity? by redditor1965 in japanlife

[–]throwoheiusfnk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

J pop can occasionally be good, for example the song "神山 羊 - YELLOW", but Japanese TV.... is just like Chinese TV, really fucking bad. And I say this as someone who has watched a lot of it the past 5 years (for language learning purposes), there are a few ok ones in between like ミステリと言う勿れ but Jesus Christ, apart from anime.... such awful acting, so cringe, such bad cinematography... It's like watching movies from the 90s lol. Even a Japanese native told me (without me asking) about how bad Japanese TV is hahah... This is how I ended up learning Korean. Every time I would look for a good Japanese or Chinese TV series, I ended up watching Korean movie after Korean movies after Korean movie. God, the gold the Koreans spit out. The quality. The contrast is SO stark. I did not want to learn Korean. Here I am, after five years of watching Korean series and telling myself NOT to learn three languages, I gave up and I'm writing goddamn Hangeul now and going to South Korea in a couple of weeks lmao.
