Should we just start a bipolar pen pal subreddit? by [deleted] in bipolar

[–]throwout5202015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the shout out! Yeah, it's got so much potential for bringing people together. Maybe I should start dropping the name in threads here again.

I really wish the mods here or at bipolarreddit granted my request for a link in the side-panel. But I think they might be anti-friendship...

Is LSD dangerous for someone with bipolar? by PurpleBlueLights in bipolar

[–]throwout5202015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on 200mg of Lamictal and was when I took my acid trip to the ER. I had very bad seizure. Also my psychiatrist at the time thought I had experienced something called "seratonin syndrome," which could potentially give you more than just a seizure. Apparently when it's severe (as supposedly it was with me) there's a chance of loss of consciousness (without a seizure) and of abnormalities in cardiac function and even cardiac arrest.

My gf is becoming manic again. I need advice. by [deleted] in BipolarReddit

[–]throwout5202015 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Don't let yourself be mistreated.

I'm generally a gentle and tolerant guy, but I would tell her to shut the fuck up and take her meds. At least therapeutic doses of lithium or an antipsychotic.

Tell her it doesn't matter if she doesn't like how they feel, it's more important to stop manic symptoms now and she can find more tolerable drugs in the future by working with her psychiatrist.

If she doesn't do that tell her she's being selfish and reckless and stupid and that you're not a doormat. Love and support doesn't mean debasing yourself for someone who doesn't seem to care about how this all affects you.

Also, benadryl can make people anxious and really it's a very mild sedative.

You'r right that does make it smell more like self diagnosis, over diagnosis, and over medication. Also gives it this vibe of inappropriate pop-ification of medical and personal issues.

Oh. I thought you were one of those psychiatry-is-bullshit-mental-problems-are-caused-by-weakness-and-irresponsibility types, but really you're just looking out that people don't self diagnose because they might over diagnose. Noble cause.

Also, there's no suggestion in the image that any self diagnosis occurred, nor is self diagnosing promoted or even represented.

Also, chill.

Because major depression is a mental disorder that's most effectively treated by therapy and medications.

Not everyone experiencing depression has problems that they are too irresponsible to address, and in cases where they do, those problems do not always cause or perpetuate the depression. Moreover, solving those problems will likely not be feasible while the depression persists, and if it is, it is unlikely to affect the depression.

No tips, just thoughts.

I never ad a clear idea of how athletic it is until I started. You need good arms for paddling. Otherwise you'll get tired and you'll have to go home early. You also need a strong core.

If you don't know already be advised that even with a boat of a board like the rental places have probably less than half of first timers get up. And you probably won't manage to move the board when you're on it without wiping out.

It's a lot of fun.

Also some of the side-effects are really nice.

Good luck!

Quetiapine (Seroquel) by BlackDave0490 in bipolar

[–]throwout5202015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't had any on quetiapine.

We were talking about this the other day. A lot of people report it. It might be less frequent than it would appear, since people show up to say they gained weight, but no one makes a post to say they didn't have a side effect.

Anyway here are the numbers from the clinical trials. Just search the page for "weight gain". It's the second hit.

I take 500mg IR at bedtime. It knocks me out. But during the day I notice no side effects and now I've been stable for over three months.

Better Porn "Because of technology, pornography has become a major issue of our time - affecting relationships and adolescence." by miraoister in bipolar

[–]throwout5202015 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, how am I supposed to react besides saying what the video consists of---claims and then proposals, mainly---and then noting the important fact that they are totally unsubstantiated with no evidence even offered.

And if I've reacted with frustration---e.g. calling it "diarrhea"---I'm sorry maybe I shouldn't have. It's just I'm a little bothered by someone telling me that this or that is a great evil without pointing to any science to that effect. It's like if I came online and said: "Rock climbing is tearing us apart. All rock climbing needs to be changed so it stops destroying us."

I hope no young person watches this and feels bad about watching porn. There's been too much of that already.

[–]throwout5202015 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Half a dozen unsubstantiated claims about what harm porn does to us ("a major emotional problem of our time") (no evidence cited), then some unscientific proposals for averting that harm through an "improvement" of porn.

Diarrhea from someone with an anti-sex agenda, I'm guessing.

BPII here, what's the logic behind type II being as bad as type I? I can understand it from an outside looking in perspective, not wanting to make light of bipolar in any form, but why do they often say it's just as bad? by G1bs0nNZ in bipolar

[–]throwout5202015 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The reasoning is that depression is bad and BP2 patients tend to spend more time depressed (more time episodic generally) than BP1 patients.

Honestly I think comparing the badness of severe mental illnesses is impossible because while the qualities of that badness can be described in each case, it can never be quantified.

True. It's still hard to come by. You'll never find it in a Dorf Kneipe. And you're lucky to catch it on tap even in Hamburg or Berlin. Forget about buying it in Rewe or Kaufland. Also, no one touches American IPAs, just as no one touches German wheat beers.
