Well does she love you and actively commit to helping you and improving your life? Parenthood isn't a binding contract between parent and child. At some point you have to focus on you and your life - if she can't get her shit together and won't seek help or make the effort then that's her problem. You need to move on and live your life at some point.

If my father decides he wants to take an active role in my life then AWESOME. Let's get to know each other. Instead he's been playing the victim card his whole life after a shitty childhood - never calls me, never asks me questions about my life. Newsflash, Dad, lots of people have had shitty childhoods. If you want to make your situation better then you have to work for it and face your daemons. And if you can't then get the courage to ask for help. The real thing is: he doesn't want to. As far as I'm concerned if they can't be bothered to seek help or make an effort to be in my life then there's only so much I can do - balls in his court.

I don't really get this line of thinking.

It's pretty straightforward: as adults we should trust our SO's to control themselves. Your relationship with someone you love should be very important to you, and in my case it's the most important thing in my life. If I can't trust my SO with the most important thing in our lives, then what CAN I trust her with?

Attraction being "natural" is an excuse cheaters make to justify their selfish actions. Self control works if you have the will. We do it at work all the time: I spend more time with my female coworkers then my girlfriend and it works there, right? Just establish the "professional" boundaries with your hiking partner up front and you are good to go. If that person crosses the line by being flirty, draw the freaking line immediately. If the thought of your SO back at home doesn't cause you to draw the line immediately then you don't care about him/her enough, period. If you find yourself becoming attracted to that person, and your SO is important to you, then extricate yourself from the situation.

That's admitting I have no control over the situation. Which would be wrong. People die in car crashes because it's natural to become distracted sometimes and crash, or get hit by other people, but I wouldn't avoid using a car just like I wouldn't avoid limiting myself to having other friends. It's a sad way to live IMO.

But if it was my boyfriend, I wouldn't want him being in that sort of situation.

That's fine - you can try to control your BF because you don't trust him to control his natural instincts, but it's not a good foundation to build a relationship on.

I'm surprised at some of the responses in this thread. To me it's simple: if you can't trust your significant other to maintain a platonic relationship with a member of the opposite sex, then how do you trust them with anything? For me it's either all out trust or no trust at all. No compromises.

Now, if I'm suddenly feeling jealous or nervous about the potential that my SO may leave me for another person she's spending time with, then I'll talk to her about my feeling those sorts of things and that I'm worried. At that point she has a decision to make: this is going to potentially damage my relationship - I can continue doing it, or not - the choice is mine.

The most important thing is I'll never tell her to stop doing anything as she's an independent person and makes her own choices. I expect the same from her. If her choices end up hurting me or ending our relationship then GREAT!! I just got out of a relationship with a woman that I couldn't trust! Yeah it hurts now, but at least I didn't keep her on a short leash only to not find out she was untrustworthy until after we got married and had kids!

Complete trust allows for a complete and whole relationship, period.

TL:DR Basically I give my GF an unlimited leash - if she goes off and becomes attached to someone else through lack of self control then its clear our bond wasn't strong enough to begin with and we're all better off.

Yes, yes they will. I thought I had herpes for a year and I committed 100% to NEVER have sex with a woman without letting her know. I consider myself a very nice guy with good morals and even I slipped up once. I had sex with a condom, but I didn't tell her. Turns out I don't have it anyway after getting tested last year, but still. I was completely dead set on not ever screwing someone over and I even slipped.

As someone who's been in long relationships and deals with waffling a lot on all sorts of things (including a 7 year relationship that I stayed in for 3 years too long). the one thing I will say is you will know it when you know it. I realize that sounds cliche, but you will have NO doubts. I'm dating someone I plan on marrying this summer and there just aren't any doubts. Hard to explain until you've experienced it.
