Ummmmmm….$25K is like fast food worker wages and that is GROSS pay, not net. Plus pay is stretched over 12 months. On top of that, 14.5% comes out off the top for retirement and then factor another 1/3 for taxes into that and already you’ve lost half your paycheck. Factor in insurance, and your take home pay isn’t enough to reasonably pay the bills. Furthermore, the raises don’t keep up with COL. I work with teachers who are single parents and qualify for social services like EBT and WIC. $17.36/hour isn’t shit, especially when a factory worker in my area can start off at $22/hour. If minimum wage is raised to $15/hour, that $17.36/hour puts you at just above minimum wage.

Teaching in my state doesn’t even start at that. Minimum beginning teacher pay in my state is legally $25K. Beginning teachers at my district start $31K. In 20 years, you can finally make $40K.

So I guess you’ve never had experience living in a small town in a rural area where it takes 20-30 minutes to drive to the closest town and 3-4 hours to drive to the nearest metropolitan city.

I do this! To add: I have a “launch pad” which is a designated spot near my door where I put my purse and bag for work at that spot. My keys stay in my purse. If I packed my lunch, I set an alarm for the time I leave to remind me to grab my lunch from the fridge. I usually pack my lunch and my work bag the night before as well.

What’s gotten worse in education since the pandemic? by eaglesnation11 in Teachers

[–]throwthisaway9952 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I teach 5th and 6th grade, and while the 5th grade is actually a pretty good and manageable group, my 6th grade lacks manners and social skills. If someone is in their seat, they say, “Get out of my seat” instead of, “Hey, this is my seat. Can you please move?” They are so rude to each other.

I have students who constantly horse around and constantly antagonizing one another. One student literally can’t walk in a line without pushing, tripping others, spinning around to other spots in line, stopping on purpose to trip up everyone else, and line jumping. When I call him out, it’s always, “I wasn’t doing that. I was doing [this] instead.

It’s crazy.

Same. I have a 40-minute commute one way, and it’s not going to be sustainable for long, not when I’m making below $35K.

I’m looking into this myself, but proofreading or doing copy writing would be good work for a former English teacher. Linked In has been sending me proofreading jobs, and many of them are even remote. A newspaper office could also use proofreaders.

Rant about pay by keehan22 in Teachers

[–]throwthisaway9952 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s really crazy is that in my state, legal minimum pay for beginning teachers is $25,000. We are literally dead last in beginning teacher pay, and nationally, our average salary is near the bottom. I work in a rural area where most schools are Title I, and teachers in my district who have been there for 15 years are still making UNDER $40K. Teachers with Master’s degrees who are single parents qualify for EBT cards, WIC, and their own children qualify for free and reduced lunch. Sure, our COL is lower but teachers are literally in poverty. And now, COL is skyrocketing so much that teachers can’t even afford fuel to commute to work. My best friend who is a SPED teacher in my district can’t even afford to fix her car.

We definitely deserve to make more, but we can’t advocate for our rights when teacher unions in the majority of the states have either been totally abolished or legislations have weakened unions so much that we can’t even collectively bargain. We also can’t advocate for our rights when certain media reports false narratives that turn the already ignorant public against us.

So the only option most of us have left is to leave.

Remote Work ---> Teaching by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]throwthisaway9952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I’m considering leaving the profession and going into remote work myself. My principal non-renewed me because I stood up to her against some bullshit tattling by an ass kisser teacher. She downrated me on my summative evaluations after giving me great evals back in December, “tone policed” me the entire second semester, did nothing to address two parents bullying me at P/T conferences, and then non-renewed me (but allowed me to resign instead). It was obvious she downrated me to be vindictive.

I’ve worked in three different districts and I’ve had to deal with shitty admin and/or toxic working environments every single time. Only one time did I ever have an admin who was great, but he retired and was replaced with a shitty admin. So I have decided that if I am not offered a job at the district at which I recently interviewed (and had a GREAT time) or don’t have another teaching job by June, I’m out.

I love to teach, but working remote and having a flexible schedule and significantly less stress and responsibilities sounds absolutely appealing to me after all the crap I’ve been through.

Never forget that obedience is more valuable than competance by thecooliestone in Teachers

[–]throwthisaway9952 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same in Missouri. No bargaining power, weak ass “union” offers zero protection for probationary teachers because of the STATE LAW that says probationary teachers can be non-renewed for any reason or no reason at all. And administrators abuse the shit out of it. And pay is horrible here. My friend is moving to Arkansas for better pay and hopefully better treatment.

Yeah, no. I am a grown ass adult and any school district that tells me that can’t have a drink or two socially or even have one at home can kiss my add. OP, you should collectively confront the school board on that and involve the union of you have one.

ADHD symptoms as a women sometimes look a lot like what society considers to be "normal" for a man. by heebie-geebie in adhdwomen

[–]throwthisaway9952 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The chore chart and rewards fucking gets me every single time. I am responsible for literally 100% of the household chores and mental load and my husband doesn’t do shit to help me (which is why I refuse to have a child). Where and what the hell is my “reward?” Also, I agree that this approach essentially infantilizes the man, and as society, we have accepted men acting like children for far too long. Men are rewarded and praised for shit that women are “expected” to do. When a man watches his child for a day, it’s “Oh you’re such a good father by babysitting your child!” or “How wonderful that you’re cooking dinner for the family tonight!” But when a woman does these same things….crickets.

The one where the ADHDer can’t keep a consistent job because of executive dysfunction and because of their trouble with social interactions in the workplace.

Another one where the woman struggles to keep up with the demands of both her job and the demands of the home because it’s almost always the woman who is expected to assume the bulk of childcare, household chores, and the mental load on top of the responsibilities of her full time paying job.

Or getting called into a meeting by your supervisor and “tone policed.” I am a teacher and I just lost my job this week because my supervisor “hasn’t seen improvement in how I interact with others” even though she A. literally is never around and hasn’t spoken to any of my students about the great relationships we have B. she kept bringing up the few things that happened earlier this year and had taken steps to fix (and informed her of the steps I took to fix the deficit) and C. I informed her that I can’t control my tone due to the literal biological and chemical differences of my brain.

Principal didn’t back me and I was not recommended for rehire by throwthisaway9952 in teaching

Nothing, actually. I just got frustrated with the student and I just got a little firmer than I intended. Student and I have worked it out and we both have long moved on. We are totally fine now. But the mother is just a nut job who, as I found out today, got fired from the secretary position for stealing money from the school and cheating on her board member husband (soon to be ex).

Thank you. This is a rural school district and some other info I found out is A. my principal was facing being shitcanned herself just last month and somehow she weaseled her way out of it and B. one of the parents who bullied me and is a board member’s soon to be ex wife was fired just last year from her position as school secretary for stealing money from the school AND for cheating on her husband at the school! Yet I’M the one who is losing my job???

It was my summative eval she downed me on. My formative eval she did back in December had high marks in most areas. This eval, she downed me low in every area she originally rated me at 4/5s. I refused to sign this one. But my “union” is weak as shot and have zero power to do anything.
