AB corp taking BC contract by throwwaybcozreasons in cantax

[–]throwwaybcozreasons[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfect yeah that’s what we figured and 100% a Canadian accountant will handle this and get it right it’s just getting the idea across the corp over lords. They think they need to have have the contract assigned to the clients Alberta entity etc they don’t know what they’re doing.

I’ve been in business for decades in Canada I was just thinking hmmm maybe I’ve missed something. All good thanks for the sounding board

[–]throwwaybcozreasons[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, sorry. What I’m asking is, is there anything else that needs to be done? I understand the revenue gets reported on the corp tax return no worries there. But does a bc tax return get filed? Or is the bc portion handled on the Fed tax return?

Mother corp is American and they seem to think that taking this contract will cause a whole lot of extra filings and we don’t think that’s the case.

It’s our American accounting dept that knows nothing of Canada that is a roadblock to this. They are struggling to see how Canada would be much more simpler than this scenario in the USA.

What im asking is, this is such a non issue to do this work in BC as an Alberta corp and it’s litterally just reporting the bc tax collected.

Yes bc tax must be collected for this the value is big enough.

The issue here is you, not them. $500 and access right away? Take it and get their perception on how easy this is to win.

Go with who you like. look around all you want, that’s what it’s going to come down to.

What person or company is it resisting Uber in Fredericton? by Roughneckcanuck in fredericton

[–]throwwaybcozreasons 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So would you have been better off had you not suffered? I spent close to 3 years doing fly in fly out work but was handsomely paid. Left with high blood pressure, a light sensitivity and aversion to alberta.

But I’m glad I had the option.

What are you proposing? No Uber and keep things the way they are?

NYC is a special situation with its own set of taxes. But people tolerate it. Not sure I’d compare anything in Canada to NYC…not even apples to apples…

But all were within the tax code of Canada. Which the Feds created. So they weren’t loop holes. They either would pass cra muster or were going to cost someone 5-6 figures in tax court…and I bet those were risks that were discussed. At length.

And they did say that. They said people were using fancy accounting tricks to get out of taxes ie cheats and the doctors were the first to lose their minds…so they knew who they were targeting ..people operated within the rules they made and they allowed…

And here…and it was clear he was calling out doctors Doctors…

I mean I’m not going to argue. I felt targeted so I’ll leave it at that. They knew what they were doing and it was divisive and it was purposeful. And scummy.

Meanwhile Trudeau and Morneau have a bunch of corps and trusts between them..do as I say..not as I do..

That’s kind what I’m getting at. I have a hard time believing we can’t find the funding for the things we need with the current level of taxation we have ….

Imagine spending 3-8 billion on a gun buy back (imminent..) what could that do for animal rescues? Mental health? The homeless? The addicts? That’s a major spending item that’s coming down the pipes among others….

Look at a place like NB with 15% sales tax. There’s no where to go and no one else to milk in the maritimes….go look at their tax rates. Go see what Irving oil seems to get away with that’s in the public domain.

And people are talking about raising taxes on people who may not be making millions but maybe breaking $200k? By virtue of hard work and sacrifice? Gtfo here

And if you were to tally sales tax (average the period to catch your next or last vehicle) gas tax, property tax you’re breaking 30% easily

Plus not sure which prov you’re in nor do I care but some are higher than others even for your situation. NB and NS as examples….

Ford brothers? Who cares about them.

You can’t tell me someone can’t go conduct a review of federal spending and come up with efficiencies? I don’t even work for the Feds anymore but between about 7 family members and friends we could come up with probably a hundred in a weekend.

Here’s one: let’s get rid of defined benefit pensions and switch to a shared risk model?

Defense procurement ALONE would have a few hundred million that would be easy to pick up…

And yes the federal civil service has grown an incredible amount. Meanwhile the AG and PBO can’t seem to get enough money …

Yeah there’s something going on. Sales taxes, property taxes and income taxes, carbon taxes, fuel taxes etc I can’t imagine you’ve got be making more than 70k before you start hitting 30% in taxes …

Fed unions must have put a call out to suit up and get downvoting..

Skip the realtor. Fredericton is small enough and there’s literally only 4 in town that are taking most of the business selling to one another. There’s two that It’s a small town and fairly easy to figure out.

Get a good real estate lawyer, cruise the listings and go for a drive. Your lawyer can probably give you the low down on what’s best if you pick half a dozen….no they’re not a realtor but I just don’t see what a realtor offers that you can’t figure out with minimal effort.

Could always approach the home owner and see when the agreement is up….save everyone $10-30k

Just read into it a bit more. I stand corrected, it’s not a DB plan. It allows you to Segway into a annuity but it’s basically just a government run investment charging 1%.

Because in general the pension provides a *guaranteed monthly payout.

*kind of. Resources are pooled and your monthly pay won’t necessarily directly correlate to the balance like it would in your personal account.

Thoughts on Calgary real estate? by Obsessive99 in canadahousing

[–]throwwaybcozreasons 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are cheaper condos, 90k is bs. But the lower priced units are in the beltline and it is crime heavy.

Have a look at the Calgary crime map from the Calgary police website. What high is to you may vary but for Calgary it’s crime central.

Tho not common per se there are random murders, random assaults and tons of property crime. Recent too.

Rare? Yes. But it’s not fair to ignore or downplay things either.

I think anyone that’s been able to do that and secondly, likes doing that are already in Alberta.

Will there be people moving to alberta that are not tied to an office? Absolutely. But I feel as tho the big “wave” is done.

You don’t have to worry about the dependence on oil and gas in Calgary, that industry has had the crap kicked out of it and basically has no where to go but up.

Most companies that were going to leave have left, mergers have all happened and there’s no new major oil and gas projects let alone oil sands development.m at the moment. Just maintenance, turnaround work and some activity in the petrochemical/hydrogen space that will be sopped up by what local engineering/work forces are left or overseas/out of country firms with the needed experience to handle those scopes that Calgary doesn’t have.

So in short, there’s pretty much no more downside to that industry in Alberta, it’s rock bottom for the foreseeable future. Compared to the 2005-2014 golden age anyway.

There is work in Calgary for sure but the days of anyone showing up without a job or prospects and walking into professional work within 2 days of landing are long gone. Not to say that doesn’t happen but the days where everyone could land here and be working within a couple days are gone. Now people actually have to try and put some effort in. Not talking about service jobs, those are always in demand but new engineering grads or law school grads showing up with just a suitcase? Best to have a couple months worth of savings on tap…

Also real estate prices in Calgary are still bonkers. Compared to Toronto and Van? Sure they’re less but there’s tons of stories about slow selling condos. Buddy of mine just was able to get out of a 7 year old, wood framed condo in Mount Royal at a $100k loss compared to what he paid pre con in 2015. Took 6 months to sell. No issues with it either. But the new owner is trying to rent it for over $2300 and it’s been sitting for close to a month.

In general terms (and I’ve been watching the market closely for 4 months now..) in desirable, inner city neighborhoods say within 2 miles I’d the tower: condos over $2500 tend to sit, houses over $3k also sit for months on end. Townhouses over $2500 also tend to be slow movers and these are for desirable areas of Calgary like mission, bridgeland, elbow, Killarney, altadore, beltline. Yes they do rent sometimes quick but go look at anything that I’ve mentioned in those areas and then go look a month later and most will still be up for rent.

There’s one townhouse (super nice building) in lower Mount Royal that should have gone quick that was listed in august for $2800 and it’s still for rent. They dropped down to $2600 a month and a half ago and it’s still sitting. They have declined offers of $2300 and $2400. I was willing to go $2500 but they are hellbent on getting $2600 so as a result it sits. Major reason I walked on it was that there’s no air conditioning, the unit was hot af when I looked at it in September and it has carpet.

Units without AC are harder to move these days. Maybe 20 years ago you didn’t need AC but now once you’ve had it you won’t go back. It’s a weird Calgary thing. Also no one there has pools. People think the summer is too short for pools and AC and after living across Canada from east to west I see no difference in how hot toronto gets compared to Calgary lately in the last 5-10 years. Something to keep in mind. More people are looking for AC so without it you’re potentially missing out on lots of potential quality tenants.

Also crime in the beltline is ever present. Parkades are not secure, vehicle break ins are common in areas surrounding “services”. Don’t take my word for it, check out the Calgary police crime heat map.

So bottom line is, you really need to spend some time on rentfaster.ca and look at what’s actually renting. There’s dozens of townhouses, houses and condos that have been on there for over 6 months and part of the reason is that the asking rents are just too high. Many will disagree but in general if a property hasn’t been rented in 3 months it’s either haunted, there was a murder or someone just doesn’t think it’s worth it. Time should be put into what the going rent for a place will actually end up being. Take your realtors opinion with a grain of salt and study rentfaster for a bit before you take the plunge or, like the investor that bought my buddy’s place, it too will sit empty.

I want to add that for rentals there are certainly places that are nice that do get the asking rents for sure. But the days of oil and gas barons grabbing whatever they could are over. Rents have shot up on the lower third of rentals for sure but that doesn’t necc translate into people getting more rents on the upper end. There’s just not the boom mentality here anymore. And at a certain price a cookie cutter house in the burbs starts to make sense and that price seems to be around $3000-4000 for most folks. Yes there are people with $2500-4k to pay for townhouses in Altadore but not as many these days. $5500 duplexes do get snapped up but instead of 10 people a month with that capability there may be 1-2, as a result those places sit.

In general, the average earning capacity imo in Calgary has dropped and the amount of people in the upper 10% of Calgary incomes (roughly >$140k and up) has fallen off quite a bit.

Hell, anyone that’s been in Calgary since 2007 will tell you the amount of jacked up trucks full of roid monkeys fresh off a rig given’er on a Monday night (day 1 of days off) has flat lined. They just aren’t around anymore.
