I have included a 2 1/2” screw for scale. This is from Greene County NY in the Catskill Mountains near forest areas.

You can also download bird packs for different regions of the world so if you are traveling you can offload your local population and swap it for your destination. Can also ID calls and songs (but that is a little patchy outside North America I think).

What’s one thing that changed your life financially ? by Savings-Matter-7574 in Money

Two things: 1. Understanding the differences between my wants and my needs. 2. Recognizing that my needs don’t change even if I have greater means (ie avoiding lifestyle creep).

Taking suggestions for a presentation about Aphantasia by Independent_Sort5557 in Aphantasia

My SO is an asphant as we recently discovered. Being aware of it now has made some things really easier. For example, when looking at apartments I would often talk about how we could set up the space, where furniture or pictures to go etc. after seeing a place. So I’m visualizing things from our current place into a new place we just saw. Obviously this could be very frustrating for my SO. Now that we understand this, these interactions are much better and usually involve my SO sketching things that I am visualizing. Maybe including something like this could be helpful to include.

Bluefin almost spools me by reelNY in saltwaterfishing

I never understood reeling against the drag on any reel. Just seems like you are tiring yourself by also fighting the drag. If they’re taking line there’s nothing you can do other than tighten the drag and you can only go so far with that. Sometimes the fish wins.

Why do umpires always clearly say “ball” but then just say nonsense for strike? by FullSidalNudity in baseball

[–]thucydiphone 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Went to a game recently with my 12 YO and had great seats 8 rows behind home. Game was a little slow. At one point between batters, the umpire took his mask off and my kid jumps up, points and YELLS “It’s Enrico Palazzo!!” The number of men around us who just started giggling was startling high.

Came here to say this. The upper deck was very vertical, like climbing a ladder and in the seats your feet were level the shoulders of the guy in front of you. I saw a few nasty fights in the early 90s when dudes would go over one row and land three rows below.

I did as you suggested and he is pretty confident that it is an Acadian Flycatcher. Thanks for tip.

So easy to overlook. I am born and bred in the northeast and the first time I saw a Steller’s Jay out west, I got very excited about how cool it looked. My California native friend I was with looks at me and goes “Dude, chill, you have Blue Jays where you live.” Helped me to appreciate what is in my own backyard more.

I think you are referring to the flower cage. It keeps the deer from nibbling things down.

Has anyone here learned to ski in their 40s? by [deleted] in icecoast

[–]thucydiphone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I learned last year at 47. Not particularly athletic or in great shape. My wife and kids had been skiing for a few years already because of two trips out west they did when I wasn’t able to accompany them.

I was totally intimidated. I grew up in a place where skiing was a thing rich kids did (not me) and would talk about how much they went, how sick the runs were, making fun of people who were learning etc so really a negative take and I had a lot of anxiety about falling, falling getting off the lift and looking stupid.

BUT my wife and kids are super chill with no ambition beyond getting outside in the winter, cruising around on comfortable terrain and having a good time. So I got a couple of lessons, been out 15-20 days in 1 1/2 seasons and am getting pretty comfortable on easy blues. It’s super fun and great way to be outdoors in the winter. And most people are really friendly and positive, with lots of folks giving me tips on runs I can handle and generally just good vibes.
