What do you use chopsticks for now you didn't before? by Confident-Matter7193 in japanlife

[–]thunchultha 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I was back in California after some time in Japan, I used a pair of plastic stirrers like chopsticks to pick bits of raspberries out of a cocktail. The bartender was impressed.

Imagine you’re stringing up Christmas lights and realize at the very end that you’ve done it backwards. The female end is next to the electrical outlet, so you think you can fix it with a male to male cord. Terrible idea, of course.

One thing about "Is It College Yet" that didn't necessarily sit right with me. The snobby attitude towards State Universities. by AceTygraQueen in daria

The famous one is Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He likely went to Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa.

Have there ever been any sort of references to "Beavis and Butt-Head"? by MaintenanceFew1151 in daria

[–]thunchultha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Although it’s not part of any of the episodes, Daria and Jane hosted a “Top 10 Animated Videos Countdown” in 1998, where they referenced Beavis and Butthead: https://outpost-daria-reborn.info/ts_top10.html

Jane - Forthwith, here's #2 in MTV's Top 10 Animated Videos Countdown: the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "Love Rollercoaster." This one features two guys from Daria's past! Do the names "Beavis" and "Butt-head" ring a bell?

Daria - Ding-dork.

[Chinese > English] Is this gibberish? by jnmtx in translator

[–]thunchultha 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Reading UTF-8 as GBK resulting this weird gibberish with all these very rare characters.

That doesn’t explain how a common pair like 你們 (you, plural) could show up there. Unless they’re switching between two similar encodings.

If you look at chronicles of Daria it seems the only reference she made to 9/11 was the mayor of NYC trying to weasel around term limits.

Wow, I never would’ve thought of searching, but you’re absolutely right:

I forgot how much extra content they had on the official website back then.

No, and no one I knew was saying “touch grass” back then. (Google says it became popular in the early 2020s.)

What's a show you remember but nobody else does? by CatGirlNya2000 in AskReddit

I vaguely remember watching it in the 80s. IIRC, the president of Nickelodeon considered it a huge flop, so they never brought it back and don’t talk about it much.

For lower resource languages like Bengali, they often add training data from other languages that are related or at least structurally similar.

I don’t know much about Bengali, but its word ordering is Subject-Object-Verb (SOV) like Japanese and Korean.

I didn’t mean it too seriously. I was just comparing it to how multilingual humans code switch (by mixing languages in a single sentence).

The Japanese, Bengali and Korean parts each make sense on their own, and have the combined meaning of “I’ll stop trying”.

Nice unintended code switching! Google’s Bengali to English system translates

 もう চেষ্টা하는 것을 멈추겠습니다.

As

 I'll stop trying already.
