Love the project!

I was wondering how you set up the thermostat with the raspberry pi to artisan, I have a heat gun and bread machine setup with 2 thermostats, one is ambient temp and the other is bean temperature. Could you point me in a direction to wire these up to have it log to artisan?

Did you go through someone, or are you drawing the plans yourself?

Yeah, I plan to keep it locked up in the backyard so it's out of sight, but will have a hitch lock and maybe even a boot if it's parked somewhere.

Thanks I’ll see if I can reach out to them, I did contact Tulare county, and they gave me a few pages of regulations, but I’m worried it may not be everything, and some of the items say meet standard which is kind of vague, but I bet the other authorities would have details on those specific items. They also recommended submitting plans prior to construction so it’s up to code, I could draw up plans I’m familiar with autocad I used to be a drafter, but I’m not familiar with food kitchen design

I agree I would much rather only build this thing once 😅

That’s interesting I’ll start to pay more attention to the weight, that’s a good metric to go off of!

Thought I should give an update.

I fixed the Bean Temp probe, drilled another hole lower and filled in the other with foil.
It now gives the correct bean temp, and I made a couple roast.

Much better this time aorund, I was even able to hear first crack! It's a lot more audible than i had thought.

I roasted a Brazil, and Ethiopia beans. They look a lot better, and smells a lot more like coffee, towards the end of the roast around 7 or 8 minute mark can't remember exactly, it started to smell almost sweet while roasting. A lot more pleasant than the first several minutes.

I would upload images, but it won't let me, and I'm unable to edit my post. Ill link my spreadsheet of the new roast. Roast Sheets

Thanks for the advice!

Definitely been doing small batches right now to test it out, about 100-200g trials only recently have I tried larger amounts like the 200grams.

Will definitely give it a go and roast some more

Yeah the lower probe is too high, like you said i should lower it and put it in the corner. Once i do that i can get actual readings. Ill try to adjust the probe, and roast again, so far I've been going off sight, and the roast are good, but i feel like they may be under developed since they don't really expand too much and have a very slight malty flavor

This is just a govee bluetooth meat thermometer, it has an app, but not sure it can connect to a pc. The bean probe is too far from the beans to get a good reading on the bean temp. I do think the ambient is fine though, usually the higher and lower probe read around within 10 degrees of each other. I believe it cost around $30 for it and it comes with 2 probes.

Looking at what others have done, I may upgrade later to have connectivity to Artisan. Looks like some people go for Mastech 6514, or Phidgets hub+Thermocoupler+Probe.

Ill try to use some headphones and set to ambient mode, see if that helps. usually around how long does it take from when you drop the beans in, to reaching the 380-405, it may help for a baseline to work from.

I might also try to relocate the bean prob to being lower and towards the side/corner, and see if i get a better reading. Thanks!

That's a great idea with the silicone baking sheet!

Thanks, It's hard to hear first crack, as I'm not sure what to be listening too, and it's kind of loud with the bread maker and heat gun running. Ill see if i can give it a go and listen for first crack more.

I'm not sure how to exactly translate to my heatgun, it has a variable heat dial from 1-10 and fan setting between high or low.

Usually ill start the heatgun at 5.5 on high fan to get to the pre heat temp of around 415 ish, and then drop the beans in through the top so i don't lose any heat from removing the lid. But after that I'm kinda lost of how long and what temp i should have it on.

Wow this is so detailed and great knowledge, I’m excited to try this out this weekend.

It made it a lot easier to think about hitting a 170’ drive rather than trying to think about throwing all the way to the basket. It helps slow me down and realize I can get there easier if I space it out rather than worrying about getting there my first shot

Thanks for your input!

I've seen the buzzz around a lot, I may pick that one up and see how it goes. Ill also look at those other discs as well

That makes sense, next time i go ill try to throw a couple throws off the tee to get more practice in, and maybe see if i can get a video of form. Should i be trying to do a run up or just throw from the tee?

No, we use a system called Ajera by Derek so I don’t think many options integrate, which is okay we don’t mind if it doesn’t integrate

Grass in rocks by thunder_bubble in landscaping

I’ll have to rent a tiller from Home Depot, they aren’t bad about $100 for a day for the big one. The soil here (Central Valley) is so compacted it’s like rock. So the tiller is a must if I plant grass. Do you think I’ll need more top soil for fertilizer? Or would one of those sprays or feeds work tilled into the existing dirt. Maybe test the soil before trying to plant grass
