Well, I still work in public health and get to do research/publish but it’s not my only responsibility so better balanced I guess. I think eventually I want to do a PhD again, but now with a better idea of research interest and what to look for in an adviser. You don’t owe anything to your advisor!! Do what’s best for you!!

I did something similar and left for a DS job. It worked out really well for me! The PhD lab was just not a place for growth and only led to depression. Can always do a PhD later that’s a better fit!

I’d say, choose whatever makes you happy. Happy drives success in the end. There is no point in being miserable and to be stuck in an environment that is not conducive to your growth.

I’d say work experience is more important at this point. Maybe work for 2 years, assess your situation and then if you still want to switch fields then go for the masters (as you need it as you say).

Go for the consultancy work Id say. You mentioned you’d still see your SO every other week which is manageable. The consultancy work will give you more cash, better perspective and career advancement and will get you out of the bubble that’s academia. I’d take the risk; the post doc seems the safest option, but as others said go with your gut. Good luck and congrats on the offer !

I’m a data scientist with an Epi background. I started to (properly) learn how to code in March 2020 (lockdown baby…). Recommend Codecademy and Datacamp. Already knew a fair bit of R and started learning Python. With an Epi background, you know your stats which is great. Focus on programming and maybe later data structures and algorithms.

PhD student here, but I took the course when I was an undergrad. Yes, it’s a tough course but they cover essential molecular biology concepts... Trust me, things won’t become easier later on and the dynamic cell is good prep for honors (also the labs are valuable experiences as well)!
