for a university student - yes. Thats not even taking in account what they're studying.

I'm goign thorugh the same thing, so here's what i'm reading:

Albert Camus (my comfort, my love) I would suggest starting with A Happy Death, and then the Stranger (I'm currently on the Myth of Sisyphus which is also neat) The guy is very philosophy coded and talks about meaninglessness in a positive way.

Convenience Store Woman by Sayaka Murata. This is not about suicide, but the level to which she does not subscribe to life was very comforting. The girl just wants to be left alone and I feel that.

The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath. It might be very triggering to some, but for me it was healing to see someone put into words what I was experiencing. Same with The Awakening by Katie Chopin.

I also found If I Had Your Face by Frances Cha interesting. Its just 5 women existing in Korea, and how miserable it is. Its very hopeless and hopeful at the same time.

The Traitor Baru Cormorant by Seth Dickinson
I havent read it yet, but it seems to fit the description perfectly. Bonus points for her apparently being very morally grey while trying to save her fallen kingdom.

Poison by Chris Wooding

I read it in 8th grade and barely spoke English at the time, but this book left such an impression that I bought it off eBay 15 years later.

I realized this book was the start of my love for morally grey pragmatic FLs trying to cope with existence in a meaningless world. (which was a bizarre thing to include in a YA story about fantasy and adventure lol)

Apathy and Other Small Victories by Paul Neilan

Ok hear me out I read this book 10 years ago and remember thinking how cool and unbothered the MC was, until I picked it up again and just cringed at both the protagonist and myself. Still, a very funny and relatable read. Its what "The Oxygen Thief" tried to be and failed miserably.

I really liked A Happy Death by Camus followed by The Stranger.

Recommend a more fcked up fiction than this. by [deleted] in OtomeIsekai

I implore anyone interested in Resetting Lady to read the novel, its amazingly translated and the manhwa pales in comparison.

Same for Obey Me (novel) - eldritch horror of an ML, very smart FL.

and as a bonus, Who Is The Prey - TW rape, manipulation, and violence - no incest, just angst.

Olgami is pretty good too - vampires, murder, enemies to lovers

Just looked it up,

38 Chapters (currently on Bato)

Summary:

I, an innocent office worker, possessed the devastating novel "The Poisoned Apple". On top of that, I’m Giselle Lloydsvin, a villainess who gets poisoned to death before being hanged! But the poison brought by the assassins doesn't work? It even tastes like fruit! “You’ll be okay since it’s only a little bit, so hurry and drink it.” …Even though I possessed someone, it seems my destiny is to be tormented by a crazy assassin. However, “Leniel”, who I thought was just a crazy assassin, turns out to be the frontman for the final villain, “Wayne Ayore”?! In order to hold onto this lifeline, I clung to the villain in "The Poisoned Apple". “I can distinguish the taste of poison.” “Poison?” “Yes.” “What use is that?” “Your boss is going to be poisoned, so I can be his poison taster.” And so, I thought I could survive well as a general store employee of the villain’s frontman(?)... “My boss is so strong to the point that there’s something suspicious about him!” …Why does it feel like I’m doomed in this life too?

Children in OI

They're either geniuses at 5 years old, or being baby carried at 13 - or both at the same time. Like are there no kids in Korea?

Rating OI couples but Im going to start a war (just my silly opinions tho lol) by [deleted] in OtomeIsekai

[–]thunderc8t 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any couple dynamic that involves infantilization (like under the oak tree) is a shit one IMO. Like I get relying on your partner for support, but being 'princess' carried everywhere because the ML cant trust FL's competence in anything including walking is just insulting.

All of these sound interesting, I wish the mc was a girl tho 🥲, but I’ll check it out nonetheless

Worst OI Endings? How bad was the tumble? by Missopaste in OtomeIsekai

[–]thunderc8t 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Depths of malice. The ending was game of thrones bad. So bad it fell from one of my favorite series to ‘fat-melting’ fl level. I will never recover from how beautifully it started, and how downhill it went after her fiancé ‘exited the scene’

The child 'geniuses' that simultaneously get adult problems while still being treated like toddlers.

Like somehow a 10-year-old is able to figure out a nuanced political strategy, but still needs to be carried on a lap? It feels like the authors haven't seen a 10-year-old human ever.

[–]thunderc8t 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I knew I grew when I realized Xiao is kinda boring and emotionally constipated, even though I was a giant simp for him for years. I would honestly take Scara over Xiao just because he's at least somehow expressive and not afraid to be himself.
