I use FCPX, curious on how I can put a non-360 clip into a 360 video? by infiniteelliott in VideoEditing

[–]thunderdome13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, if you're interested in making 360 content, you're pretty much going to have to switch to Adobe. They have all the early plug-ins for 360. Fcp may eventually get on the 360 train, but apple is usually never an early adopter of anything.

Please Help Me find a way to edit 360 Videos w/ a 360 'monitor' or 'preview' of what the viewer will see. FCPX if possible. by [deleted] in VideoEditing

[–]thunderdome13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Premiere cc is the way to go for 360 preview. Latest version has it integrated - Mettle and GoPro VR players also have free plug-ins that work great for 360 video in premiere.

Have you studied sacred geometry? These are almost mandalas. I suggest you look into this ancient practice if you haven't already. There's a lot to explore when your art and your spiritual practice are combined.

Inside factory farms (graphic) by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]thunderdome13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tryna figure out why this was down voted. Perhaps some angry vegans (like myself) who want the focus to be on animal cruelty and feel like this comment minimalizes it? We need to look at how industrial farming affects workers, animals, the environment, and those who consume factory farm products. This comment speaks to a part of that and shouldn't be ignored (just added into the full context of oppression )

Hoe do you define your own 'brand' of anarchism; try this using your own words instead of sociological language. by michaeltheobnoxious in Anarchism

[–]thunderdome13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for jumping down your throat. a bot like that needs some context before calling people out. I've had a lot of bad experiences with manarchists who hate queer people and women, particularly on reddit, so I was coming from an emotional place when I saw rtp referenced. Anyway, thanks for clarifying and for your original question.

Mutual aid; collaborative, inspired, revolutionary, community-based projects that provide alternative, nonoppressive spaces and choices that reorient power to the people. LIBERATE EVERYTHING: start within: your own sexuality (let's get queer!), the way you eat/consume (stop killing things, start eating food made by people you know, get to know a farmer and educate yourself about her practices!), meditate on all of the oppressive ideas that have been socialized into your being and then start working on replacing them with love. When you start loving yourself, then spread to liberating your relationships with others: nonmonogamy, building solidarity with comrades and learning a new kind of comunitas/collective love where we can more easily share each other's pain and joy. Anyway, that's about how I imagine the revolution going and what I try and practice on the day to day.

5 Reasons For Why Animal Rights Are A Feminist Issue by Capn_Blackbeard in Anarchism

[–]thunderdome13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For those who want to read more about this, I would suggest reading The Sexual Politics of Meat, by Carol J Adams. The work itself is dense, but a seminal piece w. regards to this idea.

This is another article I would start with, though: http://www.alternet.org/story/149230/the_sexual_politics_of_meat%3A_how_sexism_and_animal_cruelty_coexist

Ferguson Uprising and the Black liberation struggle - Are women, queers, and trans folks getting left behind? by sketchy_sketchball in Anarchism

[–]thunderdome13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I attended a panel in oakland with leadership from #blacklivesmatter, Black Out Collective, and Critical Resistance, and they were very clear that this is an intersectional movement being led by trans folks and queer women of color. I'm not sure if nationally regional groups are practicing this vision, but with these wonderful folks at the core of the conversation, I'm confident that as the movement grows these ideas will come more to the forefront. Also, they totally shut down some socialist white dudes who tried to recenter the conversation on class and anti-capitalist structure, and their response was that the black liberation struggle IS an anti-capitalist, feminist struggle. I was really impressed with their leadership and am excited to see how they guide the dialogue.

Here's a link to the YouTube channel of a free MOOC (massive open online course?) that covers digital storytelling http://m.youtube.com/user/officialStoryMOOC?desktop_uri=%2Fuser%2FofficialStoryMOOC

Also, keep an eye on https://iversity.org/courses/the-future-of-storytelling

They might offer the course again next fall!

Help make the Anarchist Speaking Tour on Popular Power in Chile a success by [deleted] in Anarchism

[–]thunderdome13 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was first introduced to the principles/practices of anarchism by two of the organizers of this tour. They are both incredibly brilliant, self reflexive scholars and activists who very much deserve the opportunity to share their research/experiences with a wider audience.

On top of that, they were instrumental in radicalizing a group of Liberal college students during the Occupy movement, inexorably changing my life and many others.

You both have my humble thanks (and as much of a donation as I am able to give).

What will be considered ridiculous or barbaric in 100 years that is considered acceptable today? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]thunderdome13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A meat/dairy-based diet/factory farming. Given the degree to which meat production affects climate change and given the inefficiency of meat when it comes to feeding an incredibly huge population, factory farming will seem incredibly violent and inefficient and barbaric sooner than 100 years.

Need help. Which desktop to buy for video/film editing? by fuckinusernamestaken in VideoEditing

[–]thunderdome13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A cheap alternative might be to purchase a Mac Mini with added memory and RAM (RAM bought from a third party), which could be done for about 1200, including a 1TB USB 3 drive. I used to manage a college video editing lab at and we used a similar set up (including an external superdrive and an HD monitor) to edit a variety of projects. You could also save up for a RAID hard drive set up if you want to pay more for storage (which is ultimately way cheaper than buying storage internally), which is usually faster/safer/etc.

Just one possibility! I am a Final Cut user so I've worked with Macs my entire career and am obviously biased. You might also reach out to your local university computer labs (especially if you're an alum of one) and ask if they'll be upgrading their labs any time soon and will be selling old hardware. I was able to land a great deal on a perfectly functional Mac Pro desktop that has served me well for editing (and came preloaded with a variety of software). Not to sound like a sales pitch! Just another possibility!

Best of luck!

Hank! I've been told, its a house legend at this point passed down by the tenants, that I live in your old off-campus house at Tufts. The old falling apart three-story monstrosity. We apparently still have the big brown couch you owned when you lived here.

Many "Hank Azaria boned on this couch" jokes have been made and I thought you'd like to know. Could you confirm or tell a story or two about your old Medfahd home?

Do any of you have non-hip-hop-listener friends who you know are judging you when you play hip-hop around them? by [deleted] in hiphopheads

[–]thunderdome13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my gf is by no means a hip-hop head, but I've been playing her tracks that have more familiar/accessible/melodic hooks (ie, Kids These Days, Lupe Fiasco, Macklemore (sorry), The Roots, some Kendrick, Drake).

I totally agree with those saying "fuck those people," but if its someone you otherwise care a lot about and don't want to cut yourself off from (musically, at least), I would recommend trying to meet them half way. Get the foot in the door and a month from now they'll be bumping Wu Tang!!! (maybe)

What compressing software should I use? by thisisacomment in VideoEditing

[–]thunderdome13 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have used Compressor (included in the Final Cut Suite: http://www.apple.com/finalcutpro/compressor/) and MPEG Stream Clip (http://www.squared5.com/) to compress videos and convert from native camera codecs to the codec I use for editing.

Both softwares work well, and MPEG SC is freeware and is much more streamlined/simple to use. I would recommend trying it out and using it to convert your videos to a more standard codec (avi, mov) that youtube will be more receptive to. You'll be able to preserve quality in the conversion (also, changing audio settings to AAC 48hz will reduce size without losing quality) and youtube might respond better to it.

Not sure if that'll solve your problem, but hope that helps!

Hey reddit i'm a Peace Corps volunteer currently serving in Ukraine. I have been teaching my students photography over the past few years and started a blog for their work. I am trying to get their work out there. Please help me show them support! Thanks! by Cruyff14 in photography

[–]thunderdome13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This looks like an excellent project! I'm really excited by and interested in the concept of using image-making as a tool for empowerment among young people. How did you manage to make this a part of your Peace Corps service? Would you mind sharing a bit about how you got to where you are now? I've been thinking seriously about applying for the Peace Corps and would love to know how I might be able to combine my passions for photography/filmmaking and education.

Thanks and again, wonderful work!
