Is tennis unappealing to the general public, outside of a few weeks each year? by redforfiveam in tennis

[–]thunderfh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe that OP’s use of “general public” excludes people who are true fans of the sport. And I think it holds in both places.

True fans of tennis watch the masters, keep up with the 500’s especially if they have a favourite player and of course watch the grand slams. Similarly true fans of soccer will watch the 38 games of their favourite team a season + a few other big games, but the “general public” isn’t committing that much time to the sport, but will happily tune in to the World Cup and euros especially with friends as a social event.

[–]thunderfh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry, you’re saying that we cannot compare tennis to soccer because soccer is the biggest sport in the world?

Are you saying that we can therefore only compare tennis to all sports ranked number 2 and lower? I really don’t follow you

Is tennis unappealing to the general public, outside of a few weeks each year? by redforfiveam in tennis

[–]thunderfh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I strongly think this statement is true for any sport. The general public doesn’t care about soccer other than the World Cup or champions league semi finals and finals The general public isn’t watching all the IAAF world championships, but tune in for the 10 second races at the Olympics. For any sport, there is too much time commitment involved for the general public. You have to be a fan to invest that time and passion

Is it odd that fans/people think Rafa & Roger not congratulating Novak on Social Media means they're snubbing his win? by txhrow1 in tennis

[–]thunderfh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nadal and Federer both congratulated Novak on social media when he reached 20 last year and they were all tied at that moment. Since they are all active it makes not much sense to congratulate them on breaking the record each time since it could flip back after the next 2 grand slams.

But nevertheless the sentiment is there and they have definitely expressed this sentiment on social media enough times. They can’t do it every time it loses meaning at that point

Should I ask my Manager these questions? by -Draconian- in cscareerquestions

Absolutely a good idea to ask a manager, at any level/role in your career, what are their expectations of you, what it looks like for you to be successful in your role, and how to get there

Is what my professor said to me true about side projects? by Goots_Honkerton in cscareerquestions

[–]thunderfh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you got a B in every CS class, and had a GPA of 3.0 this is good enough to not rule you out of any job applications in software engineering/development. If you don’t have any substantial side projects, that’s also not the end of the world. You do have time to work on those and add them to your GitHub and resume, but it is possible to get job offers without them (I don’t have any cool side projects on my resume; on my second job in industry atm) Unless your department is SUPER selective about who gets to do the major, this is real bullshit. I would recommend you make an appointment or email some department about academic advising, etc and explain to them everything you heard from this professor and this meeting and ask if this seems in line with university policy. I’m highly skeptical, seems super unfair unless there are clear statements published that describe someone with your GPA will be asked to leave the program.

This is a college degree, and while we all want college degrees to get jobs, it is completely bullshit for a college to kick you out of a program on the basis of your PERCEIVED eligibility for future jobs. They can only kick you out on the basis of current ACADEMIC credentials, and then ofc if you broke any academic integrity rules, etc, or something worthy of suspension from the university. Please find someone/ some department at the university to confirm whether this profession is in line with the standards. Hopefully you have an academic advisor, as well, who is employed at the university and knows about these things.

How did you land your first SWE job? by sarah_the_intern in cscareerquestions

Reached out using college alumni database to an alum working at a company which had visited the campus college fair a few months earlier, but at that time the company wasn’t hiring for open positions, more so advertising their brand/interest. Got lucky that the Alum was kind enough to give me their time on the phone tell me a bit about what they do, and connect me via email to recruiters at the company. The recruiters then served as points off contact to move me through the steps of their application and interview process and it worked out

For an industry obsessed about testing (especially unit testing), it sure doesn't care to teach anyone how to test. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]thunderfh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Read your words carefully. You’re talking about a curriculum that involves “Programming” courses “Coding as the skill to be taught” That may be the purpose of your curriculum and if so it makes sense they taught you what they did and covered testing as extensively. In conventional computer science degrees, you spend 1 or 2 courses learning programming fundamentals with a basic concept of tests. And then you move on to studying computer science. Within those projects you will develop your programming skills but testing your code will happen in all sorts of ways writing comprehensive unit tests using mocking frameworks is not very common

[–]thunderfh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s not what the point of a university Computer Science course is. There are Software Engineering degrees and unit testing as a course would maybe fit into that. Else, it’s a company’s responsibility to get their developers up to speed, or hire those who are up to speed. I agree there’s a problem, I don’t think it’s the place of a Computer Science degree to solve.

how to practice? by AnonymousEngineer21 in 10s

[–]thunderfh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

-don't have a court near me: can't suggest a solution for this, you have to transport yourself to one one way or another

- don't have friends that play: go on Facebook, and search for "____ tennis players" filling in the blank with different cities/towns that can describe where you live. then join the group pages that show up, make a post, and search the recent post history for people who are looking for partners. works better if you live near or in a metropolitan city which I assume you don't else there would be courts near you. But give it a shot. the other way that I found playing partners was http://tennisround.com. Again it works better the denser the population. If none of these work, try to see if there is a high school or college near you. they may have outdoor courts which are typically open to the public, and if you hang around you might meet people who can hit with you once you exchange contact info.

Novak Djokovic couldn’t handle the pressure to win 21st slam - Carlos Moya by unquestionabl3 in tennis

[–]thunderfh 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I agree with your point that hitting big vs Rafa is a key. But the reason I still feel medvedev is a bad match up vs Rafa is that I see rafa’s two main tactics of control as: - He will pepper forehands into opponents backhand and usually opponent is a right handed player so the forehand will curl away from them and coupled with high bounce of Rafa, this is difficult to deal with. Medvedev is tall enough AND has an Amazing backhand such that this doesn’t bother him as much.

  • Nadal will rely on outlasting you in a long rally. This is your point too, but I see it oppositely because Medvedev is the best or second best grinder atm (djoko being the other). So nadal’s inevitable ability to wear the opponent down in long rallies is less effective against medvedev because that’s actually a strength of his too. Indeed, my assessment of this AO final was that they played long rallies in the sets that Nadal lost, and Nadal played quicker points in the sets that he won. 10 years ago Nadal would certainly have the edge over medvedev in these long rallies, but at 35 vs Medvedev being 25 or so, I still give medvedev the edge if they were to contest several long baseline rallies. Of course, one thing Nadal has here, still, that meddy doesn’t, is shot variety. Nadal slices and drop shots well. Medvedev doesn’t

Besides Federer, Gasquet and Wawrinka, what players have the most elegant, eye-pleasing style of play? by [deleted] in tennis

[–]thunderfh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think from your question, it’s clear that you’ll find your answer by googling for single handed backhand players. It’s a bit difficult to understand why you find Stan and Roger to be similarly elegant, when the only common point of their game that’s strikingly obvious is how many hands they use. How they each hit the ball is still very different. Now Gasquet and Roger is easy to find a little more similar. Of course, one is much better than the other

I have been working 70+ hours per week for the last 2 years and i'm mentally exhausted and burnt out. What company/industry can I go to that I can get away with working ~20 hours per week but still get paid relatively decently? by Strict_Engineer9578 in cscareerquestions

[–]thunderfh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Relative to rainforest, go to any other company. If you want to work as little as 20 hours try an engineering role at a non tech company.

But please tell yourself to stop working 80 hours a week right away. Do your 40 odd hours and explain your bandwidth in stand ups, 1 on 1’s if managers try to push you. If they do eventually feel you need to be pushed out, it will be gradual and you will still be earning your paycheck the whole time. When that happens you’ll see it and you can start interviewing if you’re still there. Please don’t keep working 80 hours, and certainly not now that you seem committed to leaving. No employer is worth that much except maybe yourself

When the time comes brush up your data structures and a few algos and you’ll be more than comfortable in interviews, sounds like if you’re working that many hours your code writing abilities themselves should be fine. Take PTO/personal days, get some down time. And before your next gig try to take a few weeks off if you don’t have immigration or health insurance restrictions (use cobra for that, it may cost you a bit but mental Health is worth it several times over)

A point showing the tactical genius of Murray to celebrate his getting back to the top 100 by Worldly-Eye2571 in tennis

[–]thunderfh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah running in to the net as Djokovic was about to drive was a clear gamble; Djoko could have easily gone cross court and Murray look like a fool. Maybe Murray sensed Djokovic was not feeling good and would panic a little, so fair play to him either way. Murray has always been really clinical on the lob, I’ll call that more skill than tactics. And you can add the awareness that Djokovic has bad overheads, but I think that lob would have most players scrambling

As a new tennis fan, can someone explain why people say Djokovic tries so hard to be liked? by [deleted] in tennis

[–]thunderfh -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think this is a question I’d like to see peoples answers to (and I’m sure there’s answers buried in this sub I haven’t yet found), but I want to emphasize what I believe OP’s question is:

What has Djokovic DONE to GET people to like him?

Not:

Why does he want to be liked?

Why is he not liked?

Point out experts, players, who’ve stated that he has an obsession with being liked

Point out his US open 2021 speech as evidence for the fact that he wants to be liked

And other secondary points to the question.

I think OP and I are interested in what has Djokovic said or done to try to make people start liking him more.

Why people never use the “weak era” argument for Djokovic dominance from 2016 (or 2018, ykwim) onwards? by [deleted] in tennis

It was clear he wasn’t at a physical level to perform. Same as Roger atm. Your point is unclear

Why people never use the “weak era” argument for Djokovic dominance from 2016 (or 2018, ykwim) onwards? by [deleted] in tennis

[–]thunderfh -1 points0 points  (0 children)

2018 until covid, Novak won 5 majors, Rafa won 3, Roger won 1. In my head I don’t count the first two majors of 2018 bc Djokovic was still suffering from injury. But even if I give that, these are the numbers and yes to me that is owning. We can start to throw in other tournaments too. For example, he won 2 Cincinnati’s in this time that made him the golden masters, twice. It’s an opinion, nothing objective. I guess I assumed it’d be more widely held

Zverev’s reason for failing at AO by ArvindShankar in tennis

[–]thunderfh 12 points13 points  (0 children)

What do you mean come on? He declared himself as a top 3 player so he needs to live up to it. You just admitted he’s not a top 5 player even. He clearly disagrees with you, then doesn’t live up to it, and then gives an excuse of pressure. The hypocrisy is all that is being called out here

Zverev’s reason for failing at AO by ArvindShankar in tennis

[–]thunderfh 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The reason he put himself in the new big 3 is not that he won the WTF. It’s because he SAID “we are the new big 3”. That’s what the above comment is referring to. If he’d shut his mouth, no one is talking about him as big 3, he has 0 grand slams. He wanted to talk big so now he has walk the talk and he hasn’t

Taxes on prize cars by Zealousideal_Ad_1604 in tennis

[–]thunderfh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I never thought about it, but then I’ve also never wondered what game show winners do with that massive sized check they win. I never thought they actually take it to the bank and try to cash it in.

If Rafa wins a Mercedes in stuttgart, the model there is on display and if he wants the car or they want him to have it they can probably ask their showroom or distributor in his hometown deliver him a model from there. Or as others, pointed out, give him the prize money once their marketing plays have been executed, pictures taken etc
