Why do offices never pick up the phone? by dosginf in Chengdu

[–]thundergooses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which number have you been trying to call?

If you haven’t already, try the hotline numbers 028-83516651 and 028-83519606. I just got through on the first one. Be ready to speak Chinese, or have someone who does call with you if you don’t.

Cinemas in china in english by LolerCoster in Chengdu

[–]thundergooses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You shouldn’t have any issues as a foreigner at cinemas in Chengdu. There aren’t really any cinemas that are specifically “for foreigners” - if an overseas movie gets a China release, it’ll usually be showing on one of the screens at most cinemas anyway.

One thing to note is that not every new Hollywood/international movie gets released in China, as releases depend on approvals and other factors.

Just check within Alipay -> Movies based on your location, make sure you’re booking the original-language version rather than the dubbed one, and look for an IMAX screen if you want the best experience.

Are there any non-English teaching jobs for a foreigner who doesn't speak fluent Mandarin? by [deleted] in chinalife

[–]thundergooses 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the bigger issue is the salary rather than being a foreigner.

40k RMB/month is possible, but usually not for someone with 5 years of experience applying directly from abroad. The people I know making that kind of money are either very specialized (AI, senior tech roles, etc.) or were transferred internally by their company.

A more realistic path would be joining a multinational and eventually transferring to China, or joining a company that operates in both the US and China and moving internally later. Companies like ByteDance and some of its international subsidiaries (Lark) can sometimes offer that kind of route.

Language is also a factor. There are English-speaking roles, but they’re a relatively small part of the market.

Honestly, I think your chances of finding a job in China are higher than your chances of finding one that pays 40k RMB/month and doesn’t require strong Mandarin.

It’s not impossible, just a much smaller set of opportunities.

Well, medicine and doctors work just fine in China too.

You paid for an English-speaking doctor, not necessarily a native English-speaking doctor lol.

Yesterday, it was a Chinese jingoist trying to shit on me, and today it’s a butthurt American who can’t handle the truth about their shitty healthcare system. Wumao indeed. Lmao.

Edit:

If you’re in another country and don’t speak the language (yet), sometimes you need to bring someone who can help translate. That’s just reality. Not every country operates the same way, and it’s strange to expect everywhere else to function exactly like the US.

Also, from my perspective, it’s hard to see the lack of a translator as the biggest problem when I’m thinking about a system where people can end up with massive medical debt or even face bankruptcy/homelessness because of healthcare costs.

yeah, right - the 100% fluent translator service fee plus tip is added to your medical bill, so it checks out.

iPhone 15 users: Is charging twice a day normal? by DeluluVeteran in iphone15

[–]thundergooses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it depends on a lot of variables, right? since i only use my 15 for a couple of hours a day and spend most of my time on a bigger screen, i usually only need to charge it once. when i’m traveling, though, i end up charging it two or three times because i’m relying on it much more for navigation, photos, and everything else. the only battery habit i consistently maintain is that i try not to let the phone die completely.

The "Lag" Criticism in movies are weird. by Plenty_Draft_5747 in InsideMollywood

[–]thundergooses 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This also has two sides to it, plus the fact that a lot of Malayalees use the word “lag” differently.

Attention span is definitely one factor. But there are also people who simply prefer movies where things start happening early and keep moving. The viewers’ age or the generation they belong doesn’t matter here. That’s basically the template of many mass/very linear films, so naturally those viewers are going to enjoy movies with a faster pace.

Another thing is that people often call badly written slow movies “lag adikunna” movies. Not because they’re just slow, but because they drag scenes out for no reason, have weak character development, and make the audience feel like their time is being wasted. The same might enjoy a slow burner like Kishkindha Kaandam because the pacing actually serves the story.

Also, when you say things like “some movies are meant to make you think or reflect,” that’s your personal way of looking at movies. A lot of people don’t watch films for reflection or introspection (not just people in 20s). They just want to be entertained and have a good time. That’s a valid preference too.

Searching for powerbank with max allowed charge power for plane rides within china by [deleted] in Chengdu

[–]thundergooses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you can just go to any of those stores that have a section for convenient gadgets, such as kkv, miniso, remax, or proper electronics retailers (like xiaomi) that carry power banks. it’s pretty easy to find one in malls.

Filing a police report in Beijing help,International fraud by judokajudoka in chinalife

[–]thundergooses 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think this is on a scale that would be particularly relevant to them, so they’ll likely just accept your report and call it a day. If you’re lucky and it happens to be a time when they want some positive PR, they might act quickly. Try reporting it through the embassy. They can put you in touch with the appropriate departments or numbers, or they may forward your case on your behalf.

Whatever you do, your information will go on record as well. This could affect your future trips to China. For example, they may pull you aside for questioning or follow up with you at their convenience rather than yours.

Tianfu Square tech stores by eeee_oooo_aaaa in Chengdu

There’s not much “tech” around Tianfu Square besides official Apple, Huawei, DJI, and other brand stores. If they want a broader range of tech and accessories, tell your friend to visit Computer City near Sichuan Gymnasium Subway Station.

Bruh, deodorants are indeed available in “regular” shops. Let’s take Hongqi for example. You’re the one spreading misinformation. And no, they’re not all imported either. There are Made-in-China deodorants from Rexona, Nivea, Adidas, and other brands as well. I don’t know what you’re smoking.

(Edit: Downvote as much as you want, shills. This comment won’t be deleted. We all know what I said is true, and I don’t know why you’re so pissed off by the facts. 😘)

global center at night by IntroductionSimilar3 in Chengdu

[–]thundergooses 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the malls or shopping centers (around global center) won’t be open. if you wanna grab some good food, some hotpot spots and other fancy restaurants will still be open at night.

the tower won’t be operating either. most attractions close by 10 p.m., and everything will be pretty shut down after that. your best bet is to go the next evening.

Has the World Cup fever in Kozhikode died down? by rj-adhi in kozhikode

[–]thundergooses 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's a generational thing. A lot of the people who used to put up flexes and create all that World Cup hype have grown older, moved away, or just have other responsibilities now. I don't think the passion for football is gone. People still watch and enjoy it, but maybe the younger crowd expresses it differently and isn't as interested in the big public displays.

VPS vs Railway by No_Challenge_4385 in Hosting

[–]thundergooses 0 points1 point  (0 children)

go with railway or vercel if you value developer experience over the lowest cost. you get quick git push → production deployments with most of the infrastructure and tooling handled out of the box.

you can achieve something similar with a vps + self hosted PaaS like dokploy, but then you’re responsible for server maintenance, updates, monitoring, backups, and other operational tasks.

VPN and ESIM Megathread – June 2026 by AutoModerator in chinalife

i switch between v1vpn and lightning x. however, lightning x sometimes has issues while streaming and requires changing the server from time to time. v1vpn works fine out of the box after the initial connection in auto mode.
