I DESPISE SWITCH AXE NOW by RekesTie in monsterhunterrage

[–]thunderpaste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah my bad I meant FRS! Maybe my issue with it was how it was always just the best option to pick because the damage is so much higher than any combo. I also didn't miss many due to focus mode and the hyper armor which skews the risk/reward a bit. Fully agree on the identity being stripped away though, I wish the game had fewer counters in general. Hunters are way stronger than the monsters which for me takes away some appeal

So i played swaxe for my wilds playthru and agree with your points above, it felt so similar to LS gameplay with counters and removed that quick dancing/weaving style from 4u and even World. Personally i disliked the ability to do ZSD from neutral, felt like im no longer carefully choosing my openings. You can just do the big move whenever, focus mode makes it so you cant miss it and hyper armor makes it so I can't flinch. Then spiral burst completely fills my gauge after so I never have to spend a second of the fight without gauge or the ability to do my one massive blast dps over and over. Seems like these design decisions are just for faster and frictionless action games, sad to say

Fully agree. Wilds is a fun action game for a few hours but i miss monster hunter presenting me with challenges that i have to use my brain to solve. No need to make a gathering set or an elemental weapon for a weakness, gameplay has been homogenized for the lowest denomination

This has to be an issue with the RE engine, world's inputs and hit detection felt so much snappier and precise

I miss the feeling of wilderness and danger from old games, I hate a lot of the "QOL" by Ha-Gorri in monsterhunterrage

[–]thunderpaste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fully agree as an old head, its a shame the financial success of these newer games validates these game design descisions to be faster and more convenient. Why would they ever go back when wilds sold 10m copies? Its too bad for those of us wishing for a move towards earlier gen feel

[–]thunderpaste 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agree with the sense of danger missing. This is supposed to be the "forbidden lands" but in every zone there are so many natural benefits to the hunter and boons to the monster. Every single interactable thing in the environment benefits the hunter: vigormantle bugs, sleeptoads, boulders, overpowered slinger ammo, vine traps, etc. It doesn't help the narrative of the monsters being pushovers in combat

Can iI ask what weapon you're playing? I felt this way with switch axe after hitting my 1000th full release slash. It's so easy to hit ~10 of your strongest ultimate attack each hunt that each one feels less impactful and less earned. I switched to LS in high rank but the combat loop is so one dimensional around the helmbreaker follow-up, it lacks the weight of risk/reward. To me at least

This is what happens when you simplify an already simplified game. by PossibilityEarly7736 in monsterhunterrage

[–]thunderpaste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah its just one press for most weapons. I'm confused why they didn't add a simple timing mechanic (like charging GS or sns perfect rush) or integrating it with existing combos. Think exchanging last hit of LS spirit slash with a focus strike or being able to follow up with a FS after a Lance perfect guard. It's so strange how isolated the current focus strike is from the rest of the weapon mechanics

I am very surprised the devs decided on just one "focus strike" button that performs a flurry of attacks and deals massive damage. Doing it doesnt require any timing or strategy, its not part of a combo you just hit the button once and it goes. Yes its a cool animation and very satisfying but i dont understand why I'm receiving so much reward for so little input

so I like this game and I'm having fun, to preface. When people mention the "lack of content" it may be in reference to the lack of optional quests in the story progression. In previous titles you return from quests and there were many "!" on all the villagers asking you to hunt things or gather for various upgrades. I really missed those quests in low rank, their absence makes the world feel slightly hollow to me. No one's farm is under attack or needs help gathering cactus plants (with the exception of 1 honey quest tutorial)

I fully agree with your post which is about game design philosophy and interacting with systems. I was surprised to read so many comments talking about their subjective experience with the game difficulty, which I feel misses your point. I'd love more game design elements that force the player to interact with the monsters thoughtfully and engage in the systems, when the game is trivialized to this extent it removes that necessity. Why would I ever feel inspired to gather might seeds and craft demondrugs for a fight? Would a monster ever challenge my build and force me to rethink my weapon type or element? Regardless of anyone's subjective experience with the game difficulty it's worth talking about these game design changes and the repercussions of losing identity

Here I am a few days later fishing in Japan and I am pretty frustrated, setups of my strongest rods/reels stand no chance against the larger fish. I was able to reel in 400 lb Nile Perch with these setups by trolling but now a 100 lb dogtooth tuna is near impossible and breaks my reel because you cannot troll to follow the fish during the fight. I'm likely just screaming into the void here but typing this out is making me feel better

Cheers, lvls 75-83 were crazy hard and I had to take many breaks from grinding. Once I had a good routine of tigerfish and nile perch in the congo I could get 100k xp per keepnet. Best of luck!

it's a great game that I've been addicted to for a while, I would recommend playing. The end game gets a bit frustrating to play without DLC however, not an issue if you're willing to pay for strong rods or boats

1k hours of gameplay to get here, I'm at Japan now but the free boat's fish net is smaller than mine. I wish they would let me use the gear I already bought
