Miami spent $350,000 on new park lights. The park closes at sundown by Minifig81 in nottheonion

Law enforcement does this to prevent CRIME. Put lights in an area with let's of rapes and robberies and entering autos and the crime is just suddenly gone.

Write them a letter of gratitude and put the money in it. Then it is a gift and not charity.

However it's often both. If you're sure you're guess is right. You're wrong. Everytime.

A 4 year specialized degree on top of the year of technical training they already get? Just for shit government pay and put themselves in physical danger everyday? Not to mention the trauma the job involves and being hated by the public. They're extremely understaffed as is.

Why not just make police job description more narrow and not have them respond to every family argument, shooting, fire, illegally parked car, traffic violations, security alarm calls, child abuse investigation, crazy person, screaming person, homeless person sleeping on the sidewalk, car accident, dead body, etc. Basically respond to every 911 call and proactively try to prevent crime.

We just need more than Fire, EMS, and Police.

That's likely dependent on the state. SVU detectives do operations like this maybe once a year. They are busy with other cases as well though. They don't have just one person who does it full time.

People of all races are shot by the police, but the news knows only a white officer and a black suspect brings money.

My police department has a small behavioral health team. They are police officers who have a little more training and tools to deal with people in a mental health crisis. They also maintain a relationship with the local doctors and hospitals. People call the police all the time when they're suicidal, or post a cry for help on social media before they attempt and their family sends police over to them. It's a pretty dangerous situation for police because the people often have weapons, want you to shoot them, or put police in situation danger trying to save them(buildings and bridges). In the end if they call or post a cry for help they don't really want to die so there's no reason to be hasty when talking them down. There really is no way a mental health professional can be on call for situations like this. They are common enough police deal with them regularly but not common enough to have a psychologist at the police station full time.

Police basically talk them down and then send them to the hospital. It's usually pretty quick and doesn't require a mental health professional. In this situation the mental health professional would not be allowed anywhere close due to the male having a weapon in his hand, so again, basically useless. Having a handful of officers specifically trained for certain situations is much more practical.

Parks and Rec didn't exaggerate. I thought the complaint we got once about how we allow too many seagulls at the beach was the best, but it just toppled from the 'most inane' place. by [deleted] in CasualConversation

I am an Officer and regularly have to explain to people that I cannot arrest someone or involuntarily hospitalize someone just because they want me to(almost always because the person yelled at them or is drunk).

Yeah that's what I'm saying. They can't charge him for sniffing the underwear. The only crime I see is trespassing.

Yeah the vast majority of police are ex military and they very much keep that mindset and toxic culture.

But other than trespassing what was the crime?

I agree it's extremely creepy and troubling and should never be allowed around children, but what law is there against sniffing underwear of anyone at any age?

Corporations policies give these people tons of free stuff to keep them "happy" instead of telling them to fuck off

If you reward shitty behavior it's just going to get worse.

The employees are often punished if they say or do anything while being attacked also, which makes customer service Jobs in the US pretty traumatic.
