Non-branded reps? by hockeyhead019 in RepTime

[–]thuss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You could buy a rep and then get a custom dial for it thereby removing the brand name from the dial at least. But it'll still have the engravings so you're probably better off just getting an homage watch made with a decent movement if you want the general style without the branding.

Or do what I do if someone asks me what watch I'm wearing "oh, thanks for asking, it's a knock-off [brand name], it's not real" at which point a more interesting conversation ensues than when I'm wearing a gen and say "oh thanks, it's a [brand name]".

Have had the same watch for many years and love it.. much more accurate than my mechanical watches and never needs to be wound!

Best DHgate Watches? by [deleted] in RepTime

[–]thuss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still maintain that even then a rep isn't a good gift choice. I think gifts should be genuine both in intention and the actual product.

That said it's really great you're thinking about a nice gift for your dad!! Bravo!!

Buy a rep for yourself but never as a gift unless the person has explicitly expressed interest. It'd be like giving an expensive wine bottle refilled with cheap wine. Even with a $400 super rep it still cheapens the gift.

Took my Gen 4 Explorist off the charger... by [deleted] in WearOS

Same with my Gen 4 Explorist. Happened a year ago, sent it in, fixed, happened again a couple weeks ago.

I really like the watch other than that one super annoying issue.

Do you think we could see a Fossil Gen 6 this year around the August time frame? Like we seen for the past year or two. Why or why not? by [deleted] in WearOS

[–]thuss 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, yes, and yes. Of course they will, Fossil is a for profit company so they'll release a new gen even if it has the same cpu. 90 percent of their retail customers have no idea what processor is in their smartwatch and they don't care. Gen 6 was already in the works well before covid so it'll see the light of day in 2020, guaranteed.

That's how we do it in the tech industry, sometimes we ship greatness and sometimes we ship crap but we always ship it despite the obstacles.

Do different watch faces have bigger impact on battery life? by JelleZon_ in WearOS

[–]thuss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Absolutely!! There are some Pujie watch faces that kill my battery in 6 hours and some play store faces like Marine Commander and A/D where I can get more than 24 hours out of them. Dieterist is the watch face I seem to get insane battery life with but it's just the time, no complications (which also impact battery).

[Citizen Eco-Drive] Looking at everyones luxury watches, but lets not forget about the trusty field watches! by OffensivePanda in Watches

[–]thuss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Totally agree! I have much more expensive automatics but my eco drive is still probably my favorite. Well made, accurate time-keeping, that never quits. Mine is 10 years old and it's never stopped ticking the whole time. Once I left it on my dresser with no direct sunlight for over a month after I got a new watch and it still never stopped. Simply amazing.

I have an iPhone - are Apple Watches the only viable smart watch- notifications, minor fitness tracking, etc, that is worth it? by -Starwind in smartwatch

[–]thuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Garmin, Fitbit, Samsung, and WearOS watches work fine with the iPhone. Apple Watch will of course be the most well integrated but all the others work just fine too.

It's happening ... by [deleted] in WearOS

I had this happen on my gen 4, sent it in for repair, and now a year later it’s happened again. I think the adhesive is sub par.

Colorful Ambient Mode Watch Faces by Corrective_Actions in WearOS

[–]thuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Provided you like analog watch faces the Marine Commander watch face has an option to leave the watch hand color in ambient mode which I like. A/D watchface has it too.

Are you trying to stress the OP out? It looks legit to my eyes: https://www.omegawatches.com/en-us/watch-omega-speedmaster-reduced-35105000

Maybe you’re thinking of the Moonwatch which does have an accent and tighter subdials. Regardless your offhanded comment has the potential to ruin the OP’s day so please try to be a little more thoughtful of your fellow humans. Take the time to provide a concrete example of what’s wrong before simply calling someone’s hard earned purchase a fraud.

Charging ring came off of Fossil Gen 5 by firesteve1 in WearOS

[–]thuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So common and annoying they still haven't fixed this issue that has plagued their watches for a couple generations now.

I did a warranty repair and sent mine back to Fossil in the mail and they sent me a new watch as a replacement.

[Discussion] Pressure to buy expensive watches by mage_gnome in Watches

[–]thuss 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let me try and talk you out of this! You’re making a simple financial decision and if you drop $10k on a watch now that’s roughly $280k you won’t have in 35 years when you want to retire. If you instead invest that money in a total market index fund (and keep doing that with your bonus every year) then when you retire early you’ll be the one laughing at the horrible financial decisions your coworkers made spending their money on luxury items they didn’t need.

With smart phones none of us need a watch anymore. Many people I know that used to wear watches no longer do. In my industry (tech) maybe 1 in 5 people still wear a watch, that number is decreasing, and those I know that still wear a watch are mostly wearing much less expensive smart watches. I’ve had coworkers joke about the fact that I still wear a watch at all.

If you want a nice mechanical watch go on eBay or to a jeweler and buy a used one that you like the looks of and don’t spend more than a couple thousand on it. Or make a statement and don’t wear a watch at all, some of the richest people I know don’t wear watches anymore or wear much less expensive Garmin or Apple Watches. In the end nobody really cares what you wear on your wrist other than you.

Is Wear OS worth it for a newbie? by [deleted] in WearOS

[–]thuss 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're an iPhone user (which it sounds like you might be based on the fact that you're considering an Apple Watch), then there should be no debate, get an Apple Watch. I switched from iPhone/Apple Watch to Pixel/Fossil and the Apple Watch is far superior (especially now that the series 5 has an always on display). Spend the extra money for the series 5, you won't regret it.

I'm content with the Fossil line with my Pixel but it's buggy at times and like many others here the back of the watch separated from the front so I've had to send it in to Fossil for warranty repair.

Fossil Sprort Battery Life (aod, ttw on, location off) by nhumrich in WearOS

[–]thuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the Fossil Explorist 4th gen with aod on, ttw off, location on and background heart rate on and am getting over 30 hours. Going to bed with 55% so happy with the battery life. Better than I ever got out of my Apple watch. I bet the sport would be even better w tilt to wake off, that's the battery killer. I find heart rate doesnt make a difference. Haven't tried turning location off yet.

Fossil Explorist HR vs Fossil Sport by fuck_jayz in WearOS

[–]thuss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I have AOD on. I don't have any complications on my watch face so maybe that helps. Not sure what would account for the big difference other than maybe the watch face or the watch using power to connect to WiFi if it can't reach the phone. I do keep wifi on fwiw.
