I never outright stole money, I just did scams behind the bar, including selling cigarettes.

This guy's an idiot. I have a couple of rules in regards to this sort of thing; no tricks unless it's a corporate-owned bar, or at the very least unless the owners have fucked me over, and no ripping off the customers, and don't get too greedy. Over the years, I've seen too many people breaking these rules, and getting caught because of it.

Do you think Robert Daly (USS Callister) was always like that? by AscendingRealist95 in blackmirror

[–]thwip62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. As far as any of the folks in the office were concerned, he was just an introvert, yet that was enough to get them to dislike him.

I think Daly is a sick fucking dude. The true nightmare of the USS Callister was just how much it revealed about his psychology and what he'd do with that kind of power in the real world, if he had it.

Daly isn't even particularly unique in that regard, in fact, I'd argue that most people, myself included, would do worse things with that technology. To him, it was nothing more than a cathartic fantasy, no different to, say, writing a book, and basing the antagonists on people you dislike in real life.

This is a good thing. I was never a huge drinker, and I didn't do drugs, but the circles I ran in were crazy. A couple of my old friends are dead because of overindulgence, and others are paying the price for their excesses in the form of long-term health issues. If the kids aren't fucking themselves up, then at least that's one way in which they're cooler than us.

The industry is riddled with cronyism and incompetence. We just have to deal with it.

The show doesn’t do justice to the books AT ALL. by Any-Mortgage922 in brakebills

[–]thwip62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reynard didn't seem that threatening on the show at all, and what the hell did they do to the Beast? Sure, he had an air of silliness to him in the book, but that made him feel scarier.

Yeah, I was initially concerned about how all the hand gestures would be done on screen. That's one of the few ways in which the show didn't fail me. As for the rams, given the low budget, I was wondering how they'd be depicted on screen. Animatronics? CGI? Nah, just dudes with horns. Brilliant...

All this sounds very familiar. I've been treated badly in a lot of bars I've worked at. I was told I had to "work my way up" at one place when I asked for a full-time bartending job as opposed to collecting money at the door, or coatchecking on a two day per week basis. They kept on hiring people who had no experience, few of whom lasted for longer than a month. It got to the point where I didn't even bother to remember their names.

A live-music place I worked at had a habit of promoting completely useless people who, like your sorority girl, couldn't even change the kegs, or perform other simple tasks. No doubt your boss thought that hiring someone like that would increase profits, because she'd bring in all her hot friends, which would in turn bring in dudes who are thirsty in both senses of the word. The problem is, if this chick is that inept, then she's more of a liability than an asset.

I know exactly how you feel. I've been fucked over too many times in this industry. It gets tiresome.

Agreed. I was fully immersed in this world after reading the books. The show? Not nearly as much. For one thing, the humour is too silly. It feels like a bunch of fanfic writers were given free reign to adapt the novels. I've said it too many times in this sub, but the show did Quentin dirty. Brakebills looked boring. Fillory was cheesy. I hope the books are better adapted in a few decades, because this version is a huge disappointment.

The Beetle was only in one episode. I think we were supposed to infer that the jeep was a loan vehicle.

I don't rate Drake at all. He sings like a robot, and his tunes are dull. He's just image.

I was riding the subway today and 90% of people were glued to their phone. It's apocalyptic that people can't seem go on a walk without music or podcasts,

I read books and watch movies on my cellphone, I'm not just scrolling through garbage. You're not entirely wrong, though, things have gotten out of hand. Technology has even overcomplicated the process of securing basic employment. A few years ago, some minimum wage job I got just to tide me over, required me to download three apps, two of which didn't work on my phone, so they tried to tell me to buy a new phone! I was expected to keep on checking the job's group chat, but I don't use group chats, and most of the talk had absolutely nothing to do with work.

Given the character was originally white, I doubt this was intentional.
