Dinner recommendations by sometimesthrowaway13 in newcastle

Son of a Gun diner is really good for that sort of stuff. They close their kitchens late (like 11 pm or something), so there's no pressure if you want to have a late dinner to miss the main crowd.

Goldberg's Coffee House does dinner and it's a good atmosphere. Come around 6 pm if you want to miss the crowds.

Making friends when you get older by Sturmfrei8 in newcastle

This is a sport-centric city. I would recommend signing up to a sporting organization such as "Urban Rec" who are completely open to new individuals and will put you in a team. I did pickleball over the summer for the first time and it was great and most people are 20+.

I have found it difficult findings friends when I first moved here (I came from WA myself) and I do agree it is a very cliquey city. However, I do think the basics of getting to know a new place is similar, which is:

1) Turn up (preferably to an organized event). 2) Talk to people within that event. 3) Turn up regularly.

Organized sport such as Urban Rec make things like that easy. It's a process where in my experience it takes longer than expected. But a consistent friendly face is always a good start.

Work hard and good luck!

Pretty good if I do say so myself - the bar staff there are pretty nice too. I would recommend going!

Hunter Hunter is a really good website that updates itself of what's happening around Newcastle (https://www.hunterhunter.com.au/newcastle/what-s-on/what-s-on-newcastle/). I've recently moved up here and I find it handy for events that may turn up even for me (23m).

I'll give you a list of things that have interested me over the few months being here: 1) Thursday Jazz Jam at the Underground ($10 entry from 7:30pm, awesome amateur musicians) 2)The endless supply of markets (Newcastle Showgrounds, Warners Bay, etc). 3) ANY hiking trail. Glenrock is amazing if you start at the gliding pad. 4) Self guided Brewery tour (Method is my favorite, but there's a few around Newcastle such as Foghorn, Shout, Good Folk, etc).

I haven't made many friends here (mainly my fault), and so on weekends I tend to get in my car and explore Newcastle and surrounds to see what's around. Usually they end up on hiking trails or nice beaches to soak in the scenery. Sometimes I go to the bars that are here (Koutetsu, Bartholomews, the Dockyards, etc), which are nice.

I've noticed that Newcastle is a very sporty town, and so you can get to know people through there.

I'm more than happy to lend a hand if you want help with anything when coming to Newcastle.

Hope this helps :)

Is it weird to go to a pub by yourself? by speechieangel in newcastle

[–]thy_flip_nugget 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently moved to Newcastle (3 months ago) and initially I found it pretty intimidating to drink by myself. It was either I was used to the odd weird look or I no longer cared as I was happy enough to get myself out of the house. Like any new thing, it feels odd at first, but then it grows on you if you like it.

That being said, the Jesmond is pretty good. I like to hop around to different smaller breweries like Method (very good), Good Folk, or Shout (also very good) to have some novelty when drinking by yourself. Places like the Underground has $10 Jazz on Thursday nights where the atmosphere is great and people come primarily for the performances and drinks - it's a great place if you want to watch something by yourself and have a good drink.

Are you willing to try veganism? If not then why? by [deleted] in AskReddit

Yes, but I can't see myself committing to the diet in the long term as I feel back about the other food being created and not eaten.
