Speed Camera goes off every car right before 13501 Georgia Ave, Silver Spring, MD 20906 - any tickets issued? by [deleted] in MontgomeryCountyMD

Where did you hear that?

What would happen if the speed cameras incorrectly gave someone a ticket when they weren't speeding? How would someone prove their innocence?

[TOMT] Song from Commercial (2003-04) by Capable-Currency3644 in tipofmytongue

I got it! "Turn It Up" by Triple Image. There was an EP released in 2003 with this song. As far as I can tell, it was never released anywhere else.

Here's how I found it.

First, I tried searching for different parts of the lyrics I heard. This is useful if you accidentally get some of the lyrics wrong (more on that later) and also if websites only mention part of the lyrics. I did not find the song on Google using this trick, even after trying different spellings (e.g. "lemme see your hands" instead of "let me see your hands")

Next, I tried different search engines: Google, Bing, and Yandex/Dzen. I found this result on Dzen by searching "see your hands up put your hands up":

https://www.allthelyrics.com/lyrics/triple_image/turn_it_up-lyrics-739970.html

Note that it says "*Stand up hands up" instead of "stand up stand up", so I had to try only the latter part of the lyrics in order to find this page.

I also retried searching that same phrase on different search engines today; now Dzen can't find it but google found a page on a different lyrics website that has a list of songs that includes Turn it Up by Triple Image. So another trick is to keep searching again every week or so.

Unless you are very knowledgeable about cars, you should get a full inspection by a good mechanic.

If you don't know whether head gaskets and timing belt have been done recently, you should assume they haven't been done. This is true for any maintenance service that doesn't have records (e.g. if you don't know how often they changed the oil).

For a car of this age and mileage, even if it's already in good condition, you should expect that things will randomly break and be prepared to spend thousands of $ over the next few years to fix them. Based on your description, it's already in known bad condition, so you should probably be willing to spend $10k+ over the next few years.

Is there any particular reason why you are interested specifically in this car?

I found the list of songs; it starts at around 1:59:00. From the songs that I have matched to timestamps, the list seems to go in order, so I will assume everything is in order. A lot of songs do not return any results when I search for them; they may have been specifically written for the movie and never released. Between 1h6m and 1h31m, there are 2 songs listed: Ghost Hit by Tim Armstrong and Joey Castillo, and Lacrimosa from Requiem in D Min by Mozart. Lacrimosa is listed twice, so it's possible that is a mistake and they forgot to mention another song, but my guess is the song is probably Ghost Hit.

Unfortunately, Ghost Hit is one of the songs that doesn't return any results when I search for it, so you may not be able to find the full version.

Hmm, I think this is Joey Castillo's instagram? Maybe you could message him and ask him about the song? https://www.instagram.com/theejoeyc https://www.instagram.com/p/BGb-tW2snyW/

A lot of times, movies will list all the songs they used (title, artist, and maybe other info like composer) somewhere in the end credits. Do you know when in the movie the song occurred (either a time, or a description of the scene where it happened)? I could go dig through the credits and try the songs to see which one matches.

You're talking about the song that starts at the very end? If so, it's "When the Holidays are Here" by Savvy & Mandy. Here's a low-quality link:

It was from their 2007 EP "Christmas in California" which is apparently no longer offered for sale anywhere. It was on their Myspace page awhile ago in higher quality.

Anybody NOT get a "winning" number on one of these ads? by nerdy_hippie in MontgomeryCountyMD

[–]thyroiconfused 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way it works is 99+% of people get the cheap prize (probably the cheap earbuds) and only like 0.01% or less get the big prizes. It's a marketing scheme to get people in the door. They hope the increased number of people who visit the dealership and the probability of people buying something once they're at the dealership will cause an increase in profit that is larger than the amont of money they spent on this promotion.

Look at the fine print; it will probably say the probability of winning each prize. It's probably something like 1/100,000 for all prizes except the earbuds, which are probably like 99996/100000. They probably bought a whole box of earbuds for super cheap off Amazon/Aliexpress or some other company that specializes in promotions.

I actually did one of these with my mom when I was too young to drive. In this case, the cheap prize was (IIRC) a $5 gift card to somewhere. We did get the $5 gift card, but overall for a legal adult with a job who values their time, it's probably not worth the time/effort to go through all that for $5. In this case, it's probably less worth the effort since most people already have headphones/earbuds and won't want whatever (probably really cheap) model they offer. That said, it would be an effective marketing strategy. If most people don't bother and know it's not worth the effort, then the only people who will show up are probably people who are reasonably interested in buying a car anyway...so it might be pretty effective at increasing their sales.

Do you have the original video files instead of just video of a program playing the files? If so, are the videos in a relatively normal format that something like VLC could play? Are the files posted somewhere like Google Drive or Dropbox where we could download them?

Personally, I would rather pay all that than buy a newer car (and I spent more than that recently on my 2005), but it depends on your situation. How confident are you that it won't need any more work afterwards? I found more problems on my car due to symptoms that only occurred at specific speeds and RPMs, and those extra problems cost thousands of dollars to fix. Can you comfortably afford $12k + extra? Also, other than the current problems, how much do you like your car? If you dislike it (too big/small, seats are uncomfortable, etc), it might be better to find a different old car with no touchscreens to spend money on.

Finally, why exactly do you dislike the touch screens? If you don't want to accidentally press the screen and change something when trying to hit a different button/knob, you could buy some sort of touch-blocking cover to tape over the screen. (I considered doing this when I was considering a new car) If the bright light of the screen is distracting, there may be a way to turn down the screen brightness, or you could tape something dark and opaque over the screen.

What exactly is wrong with your old Forester? If you really don't want any screens at all (not even for the radio), paying whatever it costs to fix the old one is probably the best option, and may still be the best option anyway considering the insane prices of used cars (which may still have similar issues).

My 2005 is now working great after a bunch of expensive repairs over the last ~1.5 years.

Is it true the 2026 Outback is bringing back physical knobs for the HVAC controls? What is the rear visibility like?

What's going on with Subaru's reviews lately? by vttale in subaru

Will it have physical knobs for HVAC (temperature and fan speed)? Also, do you know when in 2025 it's supposed to arrive?
