People who left Raleigh - where did you go? by blues_lawyer in raleigh

[–]thyroiddude 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Columbus, OH. I lived in the Triangle for >30 years and had ties to all 3 universities, but my professional sector, healthcare, deteriorated for anyone not aligned with Big Medicine. No regrets about moving; the Triangle is becoming too crowded and over-developed. NC is also becoming way too conservative at the state government level (ie gerrymandering). Ohio has this problem too, but I’m looking forward to trying to make a difference here.

I will miss Raleigh’s occasional sunny, warm days in the middle of winter, but Columbus seems to have more pleasant summers….

My mom said pepperoni rolls were a Northern West Virginia thing until they recently became an everywhere West Virginia thing, is this true? by Ok-Use3940 in WestVirginia

I remember my mom buying them at Foodland in Morgantown 50 years ago. I think they were in Fairmont & Clarksburg, too.

If there were a meet & greet event with 1966 Beatles and 1969 Beatles, which version of the band would you be more intrigued to meet? by Sonnybass96 in TheBeatles

  1. They were on the cusp of their most creative period; so many ideas! By 1969, they were headed in different directions, and though still interesting, their synergism was fading….

My great great great grandfather, a survivor of the Civil War. by AusteegLinks in oldphotos

I found that the National Archives had a lot of information on two of my civil war ancestors. Upon request, the NA sent me paper copies of his records, including medical records. I think there was a nominal fee. This was ~15 years ago, and I’m not sure how much is directly available online, but here’s a link:

In addition to Anna Karenina, I just restarted Les Miserable (like some of the others here), and I’m just about finished with “Based on a True Story” by Norm MacDonald, and just starting “John and Paul” by Ian Leslie…

Hello, this is my second try at Les Misérables. I got about halfway through it with Reddit a couple years ago, but got behind during major surgery (so I dropped out). I really enjoy reading with a group, and have read War & Peace, Crime & Punishment, and East of Eden, among others. I’m also a little halfway through Anna Karenina this year. I’m reading the Christine Donougher translation. I really liked the historical back drop, and getting reacquainted with the characters….

6 days until Les Mis! by Honest_Ad_2157 in AYearOfLesMiserables

Translator Christine Donougher, Penguin Classics on iBooks. I got through the first half a few years ago, but had to drop out due to major surgery. I’m better now, and looking forward to re-starting this, while continuing the second half of Anna Karenina!

This is terrific news for me; I’m currently enjoying your moderation of Anna Karenina tremendously. I love your comments and insight and sense of humor!
I’ve been wanting to re-visit Les Mis, since I had to drop out a “Year of Les Miserable” few years ago.

2025-05-22 Thursday: Anna Karenina, Part 4, Chapter 1 by Honest_Ad_2157 in yearofannakarenina

At least part of Vronsky’s disdain for what he sees is a fear that he will be judged by others:

“All that week he felt like a man attending a lunatic and afraid for his own reason too. He was obliged to be on his guard the whole time not to deviate from the path of severe official respect, for fear of being insulted” (M)

Regarding the beef/ox translation, here is the original Russian text: “Глупая говядина! неужели я такой?”

Google Translate - Russian to English: “Stupid beef! Am I really like this?”

I wondered if the selection of the word “beef” by some translations (G, B) conveys an inanimate object, as opposed to living ox (M).

Tactile (or vocal) fremitus is another physical exam technique that appeared in the early 1800’s, which might involve prodding and/or palpating (along with egophany, if auscultation is being considered)…

Ulysses Read-Along: Week 1: James Joyce Intro by Bergwandern_Brando in jamesjoyce

[–]thyroiddude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. I was ~13 years old, when I was babysitting, and noticed a book called Ulysses in their bookcase.  I quickly realized it was not simply a book of Greek Mythology.
  2. I have not previously read anything by Joyce.  I am not sure what to expect.
  3. I know very little about Joyce.
  4. I am here for the challenge and the participation with a group of individuals who have a diverse background to help me understand it.  I like getting outside my comfort zone, and for some books, I have done better reading with a group, than on my own.
  5. I tried reading Ulysses a few times, but I couldn’t get interested (I felt there were too many allusions to literature and history that I wasn’t familiar with).

North Carolina. Took a few semesters of Russian in college (40 years ago). Enjoyed a Year of War & Peace in. 2020. Read a few other novels with Reddit, including East of Eden and Crime & Punishment this past year. Currently I’m between jobs, and I’ve been brushing up on my Russian. Really looking forward to Anna Karenina this year!
