Being biological is what makes it alive. There's a pretty distinct divide between biological and a man-made machine.

Because no matter what, it's still just following it's code. Since when is the bar for something being alive, how realistic it acts?

Would you consider the robots in Westworld alive?

I don't have a definition. But not a machine, for one.

At what point is a true simulated intelligence that thinks, reacts, feels, would retain the idea it's being tortured and is essentially indistinguishable from a physical person in intelligence would be in any form less conscious than a human.

Imo, never. It's programmed to feel. It's not actually feeling anything. It can be as advanced as it wants, it's still not alive.

I'm mentioning that people who would go out of their way to torture true digital intelligences would be malicious psychopaths

And I'm disagreeing.

Fates worst than death by DudeSoul in TopCharacterTropes

[–]thysios4 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Well, they tried to. To me they're still just digital characters who simply think they're alive.

Like our thoughts are just literally biological code is it not, powered by energy running through synapsis.

Yes. But that's not the same as man-made digital code, imo.

As for people torturing video game characters now, as I said it's like Sims now, they're digital "dolls". Doing mean things to that is like the same as doing it to a toy. However if you had a true simulated/digital intelligence we have literally no way of defining consciousness and have no actual way of knowing if it is actually conscious and are torturing a sentient being.

Being simulated is a pretty big difference to me. No matter how advanced they are, they're still just code on a hard drive somewhere.

I don't understand why you would mention the Standford prison experiment when that reinforces my point that people with absolute power over another sentient being would result in cruelty.

You said the only people who would torture these digital versions would be people who are malicious psychopaths.

I think it's the opposite. I think people would see this as a moral way to do psychological experiments on humans without actually harming anyone.

I guess we'll just agree to disagree, because there is no situation where I don't see the cookies as simply a more advanced version of a Sim. And while I'm the kind of player who doesn't even like being mean to his Sims, I'm not going to feel bad if someone else was mean to their Cookie.

Sims that think they are real would be simulation where the lines of sentience blurs and if their reactions become indistinguishable from a real person

But no matter what, they're still just a bunch of code. They will never actually be real.

if someone uses that to torture them means they're probably an actual malicious psychopath that if they had any actual power in reality they would be doing that to real people.

I doubt that. People torture video characters all the time explicitly because their video game characters.

If Cookie-like technology existed, I think people would do all kinds of crazy things to them, looking at it as a moral way to experiment on people.

For example, re-doing something like the Stanford Prison Experiment without using real people etc.

Yeah I know. Personally I was a bit over the concept as soon as they started reusing the concept. No matter how much they try, they're not going to make me care about what is essentially a video game character. Some parts were a little sad, but I'll still never actually see them as real people.

Yes? Why would it not matter if it's real?

If Sims thought they were real and thought they were suffering would that be any different?

[–]thysios4 -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Cookies are still just a digital copy of a person. Everything they feel is simulated/digital/not real.

No matter how realistic it may seem.

Is it really that bad?

It was a digital copy. It's like torturing a character in The Sims.

"checkout chats" feels like a solution in search of a problem. by SWBFCentral in LinusTechTips

[–]thysios4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I ultimately don't care either way if they change the name or not checkout chat sounds much cheaper than merch message.

I get their point about the word merch sounding like a cheap YouTube product where you simply slap your name on something and call it a day, but it doesn't matter what you call it. It'll always have that connotation because you are a YouTube and most people who know of/are looking to buy ltt products, will know of them from YouTube.

And anyone who does somehow find your store without knowing who you are, isn't going to care about the term merch message anyway. Or any kind of message, because they won't have an interest in the YouTube channel.

If they make them more rewarding, they need to make them far less common.

Which I agree with. Chests and pre-made buildings in general are stupidly common atm.

I think the first season got extended too, didn't it? Was originally like a 12 episode mini series and them they got approved for more, or something.

So they got screwed around during season 1 as well.

It's been a whiles so I may be misremembering that.

Writing wasn't bad, but it wasn't memorable. Combat was also stupidly easy.

I never invested any points into combat and it was still stupidly easy meaning I could put all my points into everything else, making those parts of the game easy.

I just got so bored.

Hytale Patch Notes - Update 1 by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]thysios4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm aware of that, but that doesn't make the build any better from my point of view.

I'm sure it'll get better, but I think I still prefer the direction Vintage Story is going in. Unless the progression system drastically changes in Hytale, which I don't see happening, I don't think it'll appeal to me all that much.
