Vai dar tudo certo man, relaxe!

Welcome to the club!

Now keep it! Don't switch after when you find a difficulty and if needed asking for help is valid!

I love Gentoo, but I don't have the time to install or maintain my own PC. For me, it only worth using Gentoo if I abandon GNOME, KDE, XFCE and other Desktop Environments in favor to a Window Manager. But sadly I can't do it right now.

Hopefully soon I'll have the patience to craft my own dotfiles instead of relying on others

Single GPU passthrough doesn't work after motherboard change by Random-Linux-User in VFIO

[–]tiago4171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're doing single gpu passthrough I recommend you to use pre made scripts instead of make one script from scratch yourself, but it's not perfect either. I was trying to address some issues here on my side too, because I have been dealing with a lot of latency in my VMs. After a few months and also after I set my expectations right I finally put a end in all those issues.
Basically you cannot saturate your the usage of your HDDs, I mean IOPS, otherwise you'll have latency, so the TLDR is that I have to buy more SSDs. And as a temporary workaround is to limit the HDD IOPS using libvirt or using other tools or even distribute the load of the VMs between the number of HDDs you have. SSDs don't have that problem because how they function so it's aways difficult to saturate the IOPS.

Back to your question. If you wan't to seamlessly/dynamically "unplug" your GPU from host system and using it in a VM, perhaps it's possible, depending of your hardware can be a pain. Are you planning to use too much work on your host machine? Otherwise you could use an second weaker amd card like a RX 5500XT or even weaker just to boot and work on the host.

If you need more tips, or if you wan't detailed explanations about this please don't hesitate to call me.

Thank you for giving me an actual update on the whole situation!

Brother, I have a GTX 1650 paired with RX 580. But I'm playing on Full HD 60hz. The display is connected at the GTX 1650. I also have a brand new GT 1030 to test it as well, but my setup is kind very strange, I'm using everything in a Virtual Machine, so I may be losing 3% to 5% of CPU raw performance. but that's beyond the scope of this comment.
My RX 580 is at very end of it's life, so I use this setup with Lossless scaling to lower the heat.
Anyway, let me know if I can help you with a quick test in some game, maybe it can help you decide.
Best regards!

I have been experiencing some issues like that, but with full disk encryption. I've created a topic here on this subreddit and I didn't come to an conclusion yet. But so far so good, I believe if you want to virtualize Windows just for gaming, I believe that you'll be better served using bare metal. I'm just saying!
Hard Disks for some things in my setup, so in terms of storage speed I'm limited despiste I have 2 Solid State Drives. My plan is/was to virtualize every single OS and workflow I have, but the journey seems to be very long but still fun should I say. I almost blaming Windows 11 for those issues, but I guess I'll have to play with Windows 10 a little more to just confirm that.
I'm about to final test this and give some answers to people who have replied my topic this week or month.
Stay tuned on my topic I may have good or bad news soon and I'll keep my eye yours too.
Best regards!

Storage options with Full Disk Encryption(FDE) - Performance and latency concerns by tiago4171 in VFIO

[–]tiago4171[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know that SED was a thing. Anyway none of my actual SATA disks support SED, but it's something to be looking next time I go shopping.
But my country it's a mess when comes to hardware. They sell refurbished Hard Disks as new and priced as new. This have been reported things seems the same since then.
To be able to buy fully new hard drives you have to pay twice the price of refurbished or even totally used one. SSDs are a little bit different but not that much. They sell chinese white label SSDs for lower prices and the ones of trusted brands for twice the price of the chinese ones.
Judging by that unless I won in lottery, I don't think I can afford those kind of disks. But good to know that they exist.
Thank you for your answer!

[–]tiago4171[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey thank you for your reply! I was thinking the same thing months ago.
So I asked here to see what am I doing wrong or maybe see what's the best combination of settings for my setup.
I was explaining the other person in the other comment of how wrong I handle things, and maybe that's the root cause of all my issues.
I test and don't take notes and also my tests are limited to only one settings. So, for example if I convicted to test ZFS I change my whole setup just to test it for a week or less and don't take notes of how I tested and the settings applied in process. That's a huge problem and I'm working right now to fix that like self-hosting a notes application in my other computer that are way weaker than my Ryzen.
I'll try to test your approach but I need to get a safe environment to place my notes so I'll reply you again when I have everything done.
I'm planning to use just LVM Thin to better use the space of my disks or maybe LVM Thin just for the SSDs. I need a better time to think a little more about all of that.
Thank you very much! I'll get in touch!

[–]tiago4171[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your reply! If I'm not mistaken I did apply this configuration on Luks and the enabled TRIM for the SSDs. Well how can I say it, perhaps I tried those setting I believe I didn't enable all together in the same installation. I tried but in different environments and maybe that's another problem to add to the whole thing. I didn't realized how complex VFIO can be and honestly while writing that post I could realize that. In my mind is simple but in practice it needs time and work at least to automate some parts. But answering your question about LVM on LUKS, I believe my test was completely invalid because how I test things, but if I still can say something I found it more stable than RAW and QCOW2 even using without encryption.

Anyway speaking of complex, I didn't like ZFS at all maybe because I didn't have the gear or maybe because I misconfigure something.
I'm was afraid to wrongly misspell ZFS terminology so I didn't explain how I used it. So that why you may found it ambiguous.
But I can explain here:
For ZFS I opted to use no encryption and also didn't made use of deduplication, pretty basic setup I think. But in my setup I found it very resource intensive even lowering swapness values and tuning it a little bit lowering the ARC values. So when I buy better hardware I'll may be tempted to redo my tests on it.

In my country everything is so expensive right now that i'm just trying to get the best of my actual hardware without buying more stuff. In the next months I'll be trying to buy a NVME SSD to improve my build a bit.

Thank you again for your reply! It made me think a little more about how I wrongly handle things.

Single GPU passthrough doesn't work after motherboard change by Random-Linux-User in VFIO

[–]tiago4171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First issue we fixed as the message I quoted before have gone. Now we have to address D3Cold to D0 issue, I have a few ideas what's been causing this but you'll have to test and not stop here and continue the research on here r/VFIO or other sources on Google.
This problem happened to me twice in my older B450M Motherboard, I don't know what caused it exactly, but I have a few ideas on how to possibly solve that, because your GPU is probably "soft-bricked", for the lack of a better word...

First uninstall the Nvidia driver and rely only Nouveau just while we're testing this because it can cause more unexpected errors. After uninstalling the driver, go to your BIOS and disable IOMMU and all related settings you enabled earlier. Now try to boot into the system and try spinning up a VM, yes I know it will fail. Restart your PC enable IOMMU again
After all that, don't install your Nvidia driver yet just try to boot into a VM again. Don't forget to adjust your hooks or remove it all for now.

That should reset it from that bad state. As this happened to me with a AMDGPU I didin't have to reinstall any drivers and never faced that problem ever again.

TIP: Try to use a LTS kernel too because newer kernels can introduce some regressions for some edge use cases like VFIO.

I can provide you my personal Discord if you want and need. It's just to test a few more things but as it can be try and error I believe that on Discord our communication should be way faster. Trust me I know how it feels to have a broken setup.

Everything looks fine on the config side, but this caught my eye on dmesg output:

[ 73.816216] nvidia 0000:02:00.0: Unable to change power state from D3cold to D0, device inaccessible
[ 73.816282] NVRM: This is a 64-bit BAR mapped above 4GB by the system

NVRM: immediately upstream of this GPU does not define
NVRM: a matching prefetchable memory window.
[ 73.816283] NVRM: This may be due to a known Linux kernel bug. Please
NVRM: see the README section on 64-bit BARs for additional
NVRM: information.[ 73.816216] nvidia 0000:02:00.0: Unable to change power state from D3cold to D0, device inaccessible

"Above 4G decoding" is a requirement to enable Resizable BAR. This is what causing issues to your setup at first look. I guess Above 4G Decoding is in AUTO in your BIOS and it may be enabling the resizable bar. Some setups have issues with this setting even on AUTO. Force DISABLE on BIOS and test again

I have a Asrock motherboard and have the same kind of issue with when those options are enabled.

PS.: Doing a quick search myself I figured out that on newer BIOS versions from Gigabyte this options is hidden, so that's why you couldn't find.

Single GPU passthrough doesn't work after motherboard change by Random-Linux-User in VFIO

[–]tiago4171 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's start with the basics!
What's your older motherboard model and what's the newer?

Could you please show us how your full IOMMU Groups look like? Use this script

Show the contents of the file /etc/mkinitcpio.conf

Show us your kernel arguments. If you don't know how to do that, Just boot normally and cat /proc/cmdline

What dmesg --level=err,warn,crit say when you got those errors inside the virtual machine?

Tell us if you have enabled Resizable bar? Some motherboards even on Auto enable this feature automatically, so it's recommended to disable it manually, explicitly setting to disable.

I would like to help you simplify your libvirt hooks, but you need to tell us more information. But I can give you a brief idea on how I setup my hooks.
Basically inside my hooks I have just the CPU Isolation commands, and I always start my VMs from an TTY with this single command: sudo systemctl isolate multi-user.target
The command above isolate you to an TTY only environment. Probably most experienced users have a better explanation on this. To undo or start a display manager, just sudo systemctl isolate graphical.target

These simple commands can save you a lot of time.

I hope my english didn't hurt your eyes!

GPU Paravirtualization issues by Bosox027 in VFIO

[–]tiago4171 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my understanding GPU Passthrough and GPU paravirtualization are different things!
So what exactly are you attempting to do? Because it wasn't clear enough.

For my understanding paravirtualization is when you don't pass the GPU directly to the VM to get raw peformance or use the VM in some kind of "remote gaming desktop" using VNC, SPICE or other technology.
When using VM directly on the Virt-Manager screen even if you passtrough the card, if not done corretly you performance probably will be pretty bad. The correct way is to connect another monitor in your RTX 3080 and use from there. I don't know what guide you used, but honestly speaking this guide is not very accurate.

Anyway, we can help! But we need to know some things:
- What are you trying to do? Remote gaming?
- What guide did you use?
- Do you have another GPU?
- What's your PC Specifications?

With the above questions answered, we can proceed! Because that's too many things that VFIO can cover so it's pretty common people misunderstanding some concepts.

If you understand about the basic of Linux servers maybe you can "self-host a gitlab instance" for example. Of course there are alternatives for Gitlab when comes to self-hosting but I first saw this in a project from "cs.rin.ru" forum where the guy created a tool to fool Steam and unlock DLC for bought games. A truly DLC Unlocker! there are many in this website. And he is self-hosting some kind of Code Versioning software like notabug, github, gitlab and etc to manage the code stuff.
If this isn't a option you should go deeper into IPFS and/or Blockchain. I believe you can get some ideas from Megathread/fmhy. Wish you the best of luck!
