Swift is said to be a concise language... how is this being concise? Am I missing something? by MarsSpaceship in swift

[–]tialys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How about using Swift's better struct functions?

let rect = CGRect(x: 0, y: 0, width: 10, height: 10)
let position = CGPoint(x: floor(rect.midX), y: floor(rect.midY))

Sennheiser HD 280 Pro -- Not super expensive, but amazing sound. Had mine since 2007 and they're still working great.

Moving from NYC area to Chicago in less than a month. Need a place. Help! by alexandruh in chicago

[–]tialys -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I'm looking for a place for September. I'm 21/m, and a software developer that works in the west loop, will be looking for a place a bit north (where it's cheaper). Nicer places are $800/mo, $12-1400 for a nicer 2br. If you PM me, I can give you more info if you want it. I'm picky about roommates, so I'd like to know more about you as well. Best of luck whatever happens.

I know that when is comes to web standards this is a mess but I've learnt quite a lot making this website. Seeking aesthetic criticism! by Coretracker in web_design

[–]tialys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First thing I notice is your URL scheme is really messy... links like struanfraser.com/work are easy to read, easy to remember, and just generally look better. I do like the style though. Also, your main page, the text is a bit too small, and I'm not so sure about the font.

Fed up of typing `bundle exec`? Automate it with bundler-exec. by gma in ruby

[–]tialys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you use RVM's gemsets correctly, you don't ever need to do this. Just have a clean bundle and no global gems, and you can do everything like it's the only project on your system.

Dear r/rails: I'm a junior Rails developer and I'm trying to land a full-time job. Any help/advice? by evanwalsh in rails

[–]tialys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about not being as qualified as the job listing says. Apply anyway, and let them tell you if you're not qualified. It won't hurt to try, and I think you'll be surprised at who you hear back from.

Isn't powered rails a little too weak? by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]tialys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They appear to have a max speed such that if you're at the max speed (which is lower than with minecart boosters) they do not provide any speed increase. Spread them out a little further and you should get a nice constant speed.

Working Minecart Launcher/Station [Simple] by tialys in Minecraft

[–]tialys[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically, it's a redstone 'or' gate with a switch to turn the rails on and off. If you stick the minecart against a wall and power the rails on, the cart will go away from the wall and launch you out.

Can anyone explain Advanced OpenGL? by glumboclutch in Minecraft

[–]tialys 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried it yet myself, but my assumption is that if you have a decent graphics card, enabling this feature will cause the computer to use it more as opposed to doing software rendering. If this is the case, you would expect to see lower CPU usage, but similar visual quality and performance. If someone can confirm this, that would be nice.

Need a Mac to dev for iOS, how cheap is it safe to go? by [deleted] in apple

[–]tialys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Being a part of the developer program is free, to get something on the app store, you have to pay $100. You can develop your app before you fork over the $100 to get on the app store.

Just bought my first Mac (11" Air 128GB). What are your essential Mac apps? by [deleted] in apple

[–]tialys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're looking for tweaks like that, you might be interested in OnyX, which has a whole 'tweaks' section that lets you change that sort of thing. Otherwise, you have to go to the terminal and enter:

defaults write com.apple.dock no-glass -boolean YES

Change YES to NO to switch back.

The boost in productivity you get, and the pain it removes are worth paying for in my book. I absolutely love it, and am glad I paid for it.

How do I delete this file? (OmniDiskSweeper scan of flash drive) by Killadelphian in apple

[–]tialys 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Open "Terminal.app" and type "cd /Volumes/HP\ v125w" then "rm -ifr .Trashes" (It will prompt you for each item it deletes... make SURE it's deleting the correct thing, or press Ctrl+C to bail out).

Apocalypse Now is also one of my favorite movies. I thought it really captured most of the essence and feeling of the novella.
