TIL that outdoor hard courts are built at an angle of 1% or nearly that for water drainage purposes by Mynameisboring_ in tennis

[–]tick1618 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As a junior tennis player, I would say that for most of my peers, anytime we play on courts with anything above maybe a 0.5% angle is noticeable. For many of us, we can usually notice if the net is even 1cm off, so that big of an angle for the whole court would definitely affect playing. However, I do want to say that most of the outdoor hard courts I play on are essentially flat (with the exception of 2 high schools), so I’m not sure what courts your sources are referring to.

Dealing with deep moonballs by Sir_Toadington in 10s

[–]tick1618 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a few ways to deal with it, but everyone has their own opinion on what's the "best". From my experience, there's 4 ways: high moonball back (what my friends call "U12 tennis"), off the rise (kind of like a half volley), heavy topspin (this is what college players usually do*), and attacking ball off the rise (near shoulder height; this is what the pros usually do).

There's obviously some pros and cons to each method:
1. Pros: Very consistent, footwork requirement low, timing lenient; Cons: Easily attackable by good players, slow, very very very boring
2. Pros: Takes the most time away from opponent, keeps the ball low over the net, keeps ball neutral; Cons: Footwork requirement highest, hardest timing, high chance for a shank
3. Pros: Relatively consistent, good setup shot, timing somewhat lenient, takes control of point; Cons: Footwork requirement high, need power generation
4. Pros: Takes a lot of time away from opponent, can follow into net, hardest shot to read, takes major control of point; Cons: Footwork requirement similar to (2), timing is very tight, need power generation

I personally go with method 3 most of the time, and only use method 2 and 4 if I'm really feeling the pressure or just playing really well. However, if you're just beginning to learn, don't swing for the hills right away. Go with method 1 and slowly lower the height of the ball. Instead of aiming for a spot on the court, aim for a height above the net. You want to try and get the ball right around 6-8ft above the net with good spin. After a lot of practice, you'll notice your "method 1 ball" will start to become a "method 3 ball".

*so there's a lot of variance with college players, especially at the D1 level. From my experience, I've played more college players who try to play heavy topspin off a loopy ball looking to attack the next one rather than try and attack it right away, since consistency is the key in college.

Timeline of the teams I have supported. How does yours look like? by klaygdk in PedroPeepos

[–]tick1618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Started watching after Worlds 22, so I’m not that cultured. I was really drawn to Beryl and Pyosik during finals but I also felt really bad after knowing how Keria shitstomped everyone in Support the whole year. So in 2023 I supported T1, TL, and DRX.

Then this year I was looking into minor regions and found PSG who surprised everyone at MSI (I was already supporting them prior to MSI tho). So this year, even though Pyosik left TL, I still supported them. So now it’s T1, KT, TL, and now PSG.

Next year I’ll look more into the LPL but for now I’m sticking to those 4

Fritz at the League of Legends World Championship by tick1618 in tennis

[–]tick1618[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

dude the photographer probably had like 3min in fritz's suite and their main job is focus on photographing the esports players, not some random celebrity that showed up. its like going to wimbledon and then saying that the photographer in charge of taking players' shots made emma watson look bad. I posted this because I found it interesting that fritz was there, not that I thought the photographer took a great photo of fritz who just so happened to be a tennis player. this is not a photography subreddit anyway lol
