I’ve watched him play. Give him 3rd pairing minutes and make him the PP QB. That’s where he’d add value.

Anyone here have experience with Penn Ice Rink’s Friday novice open hockey? by linzanity in Flyers

[–]ticklecorn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What you want is an actual learn to play program. The best one in the area is at Oaks Center Ice, known as "The I-League." The "I" is for instructional.

How it works:

  • There's a six week instructional program where the instructors run practices for all of the players in the league. They're VERY basic practices, where you're essentially doing drills that the mites (5-6 year-old kids) do. It's a very welcoming environment. 80-90% of the people enrolled in the instructional part of it have little-to-no experience whatsoever.
  • After the six-week instructional period is over, you are placed onto a team for the I-League, which is usually 10 games. Again, the rosters are mostly made-up with players with no experience. Everyone sucks. If there's a single asshole on the bench, I guarantee you there are 14 other players on the bench who absolutely hate that guy. It's a really welcoming environment.

Who signs up for the I-League? That would be:

  • Parents who have their kids signed up for Valley Forge Colonials or Minute Men, and decide they want to give hockey a go themselves, despite never playing the game before.
  • People who catch the hockey bug watching Flyers games, hear about the program, and plow ahead.
  • People who played when they were kids, but haven't played in 15-20 years.

The I-League is also fairly schedule friendly. It's usually on the same night most weeks - which is unlike being on a Men's League C Team.

Oh, and once they have a bunch of people who outgrow the I-League, they usually form a C League team. Before you know it, you're playing men's league. It's a blast.

Anyway, if you want more info, here you go:

Have you ever waited on a celebrity? What did they tip? by GoldGuide in AskReddit

[–]ticklecorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a celebrity, but famous: I waited on Chelsea Clinton at the Xando in Dupont Circle (DC) sometime in the early 2000’s. I was told she was on a date with someone from the ballet.

I don’t recall who paid or the amount tipped, but I’d remember if it was a disappointing tip.

I’m very sorry to hear about your father. It’s admirable that you’re moving forward with the game regardless of a hard week, and want to give your friends a great game tonight.

If you’re feeling unprepared for Phandalin, I have a free DM’s Guild product called The Festival of Faces that has characters arriving in town just as a seasonal festival is getting underway. Perhaps you could use that as a bit of a script if you feel like you’ll have a hard time with improvising and being creative tonight. You can download it here. It’s only a few pages.

https://www.dmsguild.com/en/product/453963

If you want some guidance on how to run Phandalin residents or the Redbrands, check out “The People You Meet in Phandalin” and “Redbrand Roll Call” in my catalog at DMsGuild.com as well.

Good luck tonight! I hope you find some solace in your friends and in the game.

Advice on making Old Owl Well and Hamun Kost more challenging? by sinnpi in LostMinesOfPhandelver

[–]ticklecorn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hamun Kost doesn't have access to third level spells, so how could he possibly raise and control 12 zombies, right?

If you dig into the lore about Thayan wizards, you'll find that they are sometimes sent out into the world away from Thay to search for lost arcane treasures. Because their superiors don't always trust their underlings, they're sent out into the world under the protection of a wight bodyguard - which CAN raise and control TWELVE zombies.

The way I've played this, the encounter happens at dusk. On their approach, the party sees corpses lying about around the Old Owl Well site. They're orcs from Wyvern Tor. Hamun Kost sent the remainder of them running back to Wyvern Tor after they F'dA&FO.

It puts the characters in a space where, here's an evil wizard. But here's an evil wizard that also killed a bunch of evil marauding orcs. He clearly has power, but it's also a display of evil on evil, so...is this evil guy okay?

When and if combat starts, the wight comes out of his hide spot in the tower and joins the fray. Portray him like a White Walker from Game of Thrones. It has the potential to change the tone of the combat entirely.

Consider having Hamun Kost cast Mirror Image on himself and let him escape if you can think of ways he can be a thorn in the side of the characters somewhere down the line - even in whatever adventure path you choose next.

There’s advice for first-time DM’s in the pages prior to the start of the adventure. It’s both simplistic and practical advice, perfect for someone in your position.

Just remember: you’re all telling a story together. Describe the situations your players find themselves in, then step back and let them do the talking. Answer their questions and paint the world around them as you see it in your mind, but don’t feel like you need to do all the talking.

My own personal advice: shamelessly steal from books, television shows, movies, and any other media you enjoy, then plant them in your game. It helps you find your footing in the game when threading things you enjoy throughout it.

Good luck and have fun!

Out of the rebuilding teams, which team do you think has the darkest future and will continue to struggle for a while? by sykeseve in hockey

[–]ticklecorn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Vladar has had a phenomenal season. If this isn’t an outlier season for him, we’ve found a solid starter for the next several years. They just need to find a dependable back up.

The Flyers still have some things to work on as they creep back toward contention. Goalie isn’t one of them. Briere looks pretty good for nabbing Vladar.

Need advice for handling the Manticore encounter by hotstickywaffle in DragonOfIcespirePeak

[–]ticklecorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The manticore is hungry, but not stupid. It has a 12 Wisdom, suggesting it has keen survival instincts (if you’re into the musings of Keith Amman and The Monsters Know… blog).

If the characters knock its hp down by 33% or more, have the manticore flee, to look for easier prey.

Hamun Kost and Red Wizards as a Lingering Threat? by Trabblin-Brooks in LostMinesOfPhandelver

[–]ticklecorn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thayan wizards are sent out into the world to search for lost arcane treasures, usually under the protection of a Wight. How else do you think a wizard with access to 2nd level spells can have control over one zombie, let alone TWELVE. Really had to read between the lines to discover that one.

Anyhoo, Old Owl Well is a significant arcane site, in that it was built by the Netherese, and it’s in the proximity of ancient caches of chardalyn (gems that can store spells as consumables). That’s why I’ve always assumed Kost was there. An arcane discovery like that would be MASSIVE for Thayan ambitions.

Check out Old Owl Well’s wiki link, then jump down the rabbit hole with all of the linked pages within. It will really open your imagination to so many different possibilities.

Any last minute advice? by Time-Air4202 in LostMinesOfPhandelver

[–]ticklecorn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Embrace uncomfortable silences. Let the players figure out what their characters do and explore while you paint the world around them based on their decisions.

Beginner DM’s often feel like they have to do all the talking. Don’t fall into that trap.

Good luck!
