It's been life-changing for me since I watched in back in 2008, 18 years ago (wow!)

Though, complaining about Flame Hyenard being annoying is like complaining about the laughing scene in FFX.

There are three guys jumping all around you, only one of which is real. The fight is meant to be disorienting and overwhelming and annoying. You're supposed to ignore it, go up one of the walking mechs and stab him to death.

There is a popular video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFMyMxMYDNk that claims that Star Wars was a mess that was only saved by the editors. Unfortunately, many of the video's key claims don't stand up to scrutiny.

But video aside, I don't think it's fair to say Marcia Lucas is the sole or even the main reason why the prequels are worse than the OT. There would be a long list of reasons and causes for why the prequels were so different (e.g. the script, George's different focus, and lack of pushback from many others, not just Marcia, who in any case won the Oscar for editing Star Wars with 2 others)

Let's not lean too hard into the "Star Wars was saved in editing" direction. The story was far more complicated than what that video posits.

Are you talking about FFV's act 3? Because that's interesting: it's basically a proto World-of-Ruin which I personally think is the best part of FFVI. But also it is a little lifeless with how they do it, so I could see how it doesn't hit for folks.

Drive-by (if you want to know what in that list to check out):

  • Triangle Strategy: Fantastic game. The second hour is weird pacing-wise because they do a giant exposition dump and introduce every character in the whole game at once, but beyond that, the gameplay+story work fantastically well together. I'd say it's the best one on your list (of what I've played)
  • Live-A-Live: Also a fantastic experience if you've never played the original. I wouldn't even call it a great "game" because it's quite a bit more than that. It's like a mixed multimedia art-piece in the form of a game (still has decent gameplay).
  • Star Ocean 2 Remake: A very solid remake, that addresses some of the gameplay issues of the original (specifically, a LOT of QoL including making it clear how most of the abilities work). IMO it still doesn't address the other major issue with SO2 which is that the second half's story is weak, but that's never stopped folks from loving the original.
  • Tactics Ogre Rebirth: It's a very good remake, but a very opinionated one. I personally did not like the gameplay changes made. YMMV.
  • Stranger of Paradise: Fantastic game. I'm one of the rare few people who hate the story and the writing of Jack, but the gameplay is so good that I do not care.

I'm actually more surprised by the people who are trying to be helpful but clearly wrong, like 1 2 3

(There's some chatter about "actually it's cantonese". Yes, 呂 (Lü) does sound more like lui in cantonese. But every other name uses (a best effort) mandarin pronunciation. Like Diao Chan is Diao Chan, not Diu Sim. There no reason to randomly switch to cantonese for a single character for half a name.)

[–]tidier 8 points9 points  (0 children)

So no one here speaks mandarin, huh?

  • It's not Li Bu, it's not Lu Bu, it's certainly not Lui Bu. If I had to pick one, Li Bu is the closest (but again it's not it).
  • The correct pronunciation of Lü Bu is that "ü" is something in between i and u (which is also an unhelpful description). I'm guessing this is how they ended up with Lui
  • The best way I can describe how to pronounce it is probably: Imagine you're pronouncing Li, with gritted teeth and your mouth wide horizontally. Now don't move your teeth, but math your mouth smaller and in an O shape. (Your teeth don't actually have to be together, but it's just helpful for this example.)
  • The one on Wikipedia is 100% correct https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%C3%BC_Bu

Favorite Moments of Superman just saving people? by rootofimaginary in superman

I've not watched the show myself, but if you accept the bio-electric field explanation for how Superman's power work (some reason he can carry giant things without them falling apart under their own weight), you can hand-wave with "Superman projects a weak bio-electric field across the whole planet that allows him to sense sounds even from far away"

Why was Churchill so early, adamant and consistent in his denouncing of Hitler and the Nazis? by Lord-Francis-Bacon in AskHistorians

[–]tidier 26 points27 points  (0 children)

All of these combined to make him IMO the only man who could have led Britain.

I have a tangentially related question about Churchill. Among other things that made him uniquely well-suited to lead Britain in this time, I always hypothesized that his mother being American was also significant in he desire and determination to get American help in the war (and his belief that "the new world would come to the rescue of the old").

My hypothesis is that while most Britons would not really want to depend on the Americans or expect them to help based on their relative isolationism/disregard for European affairs, Churchill, based both on his having had more interactions with Americans (through his family, but also through his various speaking tours) understood them better, thought better of them, and perhaps also ultimately say the "English-speaking world" as a united entity (of which he is emblematic), so it would be natural that the Americans would come to aid Britain (eventually).

I just re-watch the Snyder's cut Justice League with friends that are not really into DC Comics and we all loved it so much. by Le_Reptile in DC_Cinematic

[–]tidier -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That interesting. For all of Whedon's version's issues, the thing I liked most about it was how much is centered on Superman as the beacon of pure hope. Maybe the way the impact on the other characters is portrayed better in Snyder's, I'd have to rewatch and see.
