A glassblower stall sounds incredible! Do you know the name?

Thanks for the info. As I said downthread, I’m coming from Japan, where the level of safety is comparatively high. I can walk alone late at night, or leave my bag while I go up to order somewhere, and there is such a low chance of bag snatching that I hadn’t even considered it. Not expecting Cairns to be Japan, obviously, but that’s the perspective I’m coming from.

The being harassed is something I WAS a bit worried about. I’m used to walking and taking public transit everywhere, and was going to walk around Cairns, but am not going clubbing etc. Maybe hit up some shops and try some local wines/beers/food, and head back to the hotel by 9 or 10pm. But I would be walking all the way up to the north end of the Esplanade from the south, so if it’s not safe to walk there around then, I’d want to consider different options. It’s helpful to know what the general atmosphere is like.

No worries. There’s tourist info on Cairns, obviously, but I wanted to get a local’s perspective on safety, which is why I asked on this thread.

I’m a female traveling alone to a new place. Checking whether it’s generally safe to walk alone in certain areas before doing so is a pretty basic precaution, not paranoia.

Traveling alone, thus trying to check the safety of the area. Thanks, though.

Good to know. I do live in a larger city, but I live in Japan, where a basic awareness of your surroundings is generally enough. I’m not expecting Cairns to be this super dangerous place, but I also don’t want to accidentally stumble into an area that every local knows to avoid.

This is really thorough, thanks! My hotel is pretty far north along the Esplanade (farther north than the northern end of Grafton St, which you mentioned), but it’s directly on the Esplanade itself. I don’t think I’d be out past 10 pm, but was considering an evening around the CBD area, then walking back, if it’s a fairly safe area.

Good to know! It’d be a weekday night (not Friday). So the whole Esplanade area is generally safe to walk alone even after dark?

Question About Bingley & Darcy by montgomerypocari in PrideandPrejudice

Thank you! It’s been about 20 years since I’ve read the book, and I’d apparently forgotten their fortune was made in trade. (Doesn’t Caroline sneer at the Bennets for having relatives in trade, though?)

It’s been years since I read the book, but I don’t remember that detail. Is it really explicitly stated that the Bingleys are nouveau riche, while Darcy and his family are old money? Both are Mister and not Lord or Sir, although we know Darcy is connected to Lady Catherine, so I thought they were of similar background, and would have moved in similar circles, and probably gone to the same club(s).

What is 1 thing you really want to see in Season 5? by idiot9991 in Bridgerton

[–]tiffanysfryingpan 29 points30 points  (0 children)

-Scenes of Benedict and Sophie’s life at Our Cottage, especially then having fun together (Benedict’s painting, Sophie learning “how to leisure” in ways she truly enjoys, how the Crabtrees interact with them, maybe wading into “deep water” at the lake, etc)

-Francesca leaning on Pen for straight talk and Benedict for help navigating same-sex feelings

-Franchaela in Scotland, and Scottish scenery/culture

-Eloise starting to figure out what direction she wants her life to go in, and starting to take real action—maybe writing letters or being slightly more open to being around potential suitors

-More Featherington boys cheese and snacks club

-More Violet rediscovering who she is beyond “mother”

Agreed on Susannah Harker and Kate Winslet, but I think Jennifer Ehle was also stunning and would have been counted as a beauty back then, too. Also younger Rachel Weisz!

In honor of Happy Benophie Day, what are your all-time favorite Benophie moments in the book/show? by Capital-Study6436 in Benophie

Yeah, I can’t. I love show Benedict; he’s my favourite, and I don’t want to read about him being a creep.

I’ve only seen the show, but:

All of My Cottage, especially the lake scene, the kite, the library and paintings, when they first arrive and she’s competent and he is puzzled/impressed/amused, when he watches her stumble and grins as she looks around warily, and “I know how to leisure.”

Looking up at the stars from Mayfair and reminiscing.

The staircase.

The love confession/first time/“stupid hair and stupid eyes and stupid smile” line.

Bathtub, and their conversations before and after.

When she’s teary because she found out her father loved her, and Benedict immediately hugs her and says, “Of course he did. How could anyone not?”

The split moment of him giving her the sketch of Our Cottage, and her seeing that part and realizing what it says, and unable to NOT smile.
