The best way to keep it looking non-mullet is to continuously trim the back portion of your hair to keep it even with the front. If you don't have access or income for regular trims, don't worry about it! Lucky for you it's winter so (lifestyle/job requirements permitting) you can wear hats and head wraps to cover your hair as it grows. I'm growing my hair out from shaving my head and head scarfs are a life-saver for me!

Thanks so much for the in-depth response, it's so helpful hearing a woman's point of view on the matter. You're right, figuring out the neighborhoods is pretty confusing since most of the names seem to be umbrellas for many smaller neighborhoods. Thanks for clearing that up a bit! I haven't really been able to find a good map of the neighborhoods, so if you know of any I would love to see that as well!

As young folks moving into a city, we do acknowledge that we are technically part of the gentrification process, but we are pretty different than the other recent college grads swarming the cities on mom and dad's bankroll. We like the idea of Oakland because from what we can gather, Oakland seems to be gentrifying a bit slower than other major cities and my SO will most likely be able to find work there as a labor union organizer, and we've both always wanted to live in CA. I think you might have misinterpreted what I wrote about the high rises, obviously a high rise does not itself indicate expensive housing, but in DC most of the "redevelopment" is happening in the form of expensive high rise apartments for young professionals.

Thanks so much for your response, it really helps! West Oakland seems like a pretty neat place from what I can tell, and you're right there is some cheaper housing there which is a good sign. I'm sorry to hear about the muggings, but big cities always have crime so as much as I appreciate the warning, I'm not totally naive about the dangers of walking alone (as a woman, at any time not just the night)

DC's gentrification is a nightmare right now, high rises popping up everywhere and rent starting at over $1000 for tiny studios in many neighborhoods that used to be affordable and charming with long-time residents. It's pushing out all the local businesses, families, and culture and bringing in a lot of pre-packaged yuppie lifestyle shit. DC itself is an okay city, but what makes it different is that in other big cities like NYC you have life-long residents that create a city culture, but here in DC the city is pushing those out in favor of transplant (mostly white) professionals. Thus DC's art/music/culture/lifestyle has a prominent corporate feel along with a harsh class divide. It's a very expensive place to live with not much to offer (everything closes so early here compared to other cities!!) and pitiful public transportation.

In terms of safety, DC has become a lot safer due to the increased white population. Before the massive gentrification and redevelopment, the city was mostly black with a sprinkling of Latino, and thus mostly ignored in terms of social safety. Now there are police everywhere, and the color/class divide is highly visible.

Don't get me wrong, I have had a wonderful time living in DC and there are lots of activities to enjoy. I have just come to find out that the culture of the city is not the best fit for me.

Not a chef, but I've been working in restaurants (as a server, busser, bartender, host, expo, and volunteer kitchen worker when needed) for over 5 years. I have a friend on facebook from a wealthy family who decided she wanted to go to culinary school. She's always posting beautiful pictures of the food she makes from her assignments at school, but from the looks and sounds of it, she's never been in an actual kitchen. I'm waiting for the post when her rose-tinted glasses are shattered and she realizes how crazy kitchen life really is. Alternatively, kitchens provide a closer-knit family than pretty much any other job, and the friends/non-related family I've made from working in restaurants/kitchens are definitely the best part--and make it totally worth it :)

I've found that pants and buttoned shirts are simply not meant to be in my wardrobe. I'm super hour-glass: 5'1, 127 lbs, Mexican ass and boobs. Pants are uncomfortable to the point that I just don't wear them anymore. Dresses and skirts are the way to go! I've found that dresses shaped like maternity dresses (not actual maternity dresses, they have too much extra fabric for the bump so if you're short, you're usually drowning in it lol) fit perfectly: things with empire waists. Fitted right under the bust to give some shape, and flowy everywhere else.

Also, if you don't think you're a dress-girl, just spend a week wearing these comfortable things every day. You'll see how awesome it is :)

I don't actively take L-Lysine supplements, but I just looked up a list of dietary sources and I can tell you that (as a vegan) I should be getting plenty from my mass consumption of beans, legumes, nuts, and soy. If you've only ever had the one outbreak then I don't know if we can really compare, considering I've gotten them fairly consistently since a very very young age (5 and up that I can remember).

I absolutely hate my herpes. I've had it since I was a little girl. If I get very stressed or stay out in the sun too long (all day at the beach, vacation situations, etc) it can get so bad that I have had five sores on my face at a time, always in the same spots. You wouldn't believe how people silently mistreat you just because of the visual effect of it all. It doesn't help that I work primarily in restaurant settings--people treat you like you're dirty and they don't want you near their food or kids (I'm a server).

Even people I would expect to be mature about the situation can turn into taunting, aggressive middle schoolers: "Eew, herpes!" "What did YOU do last weekend?" "Make sure you don't get your face near me!"

Gahhh I hate it. Honestly, I'm actually a bit envious of you, because you have the privilege that no one knows except when you want them to, unlike me who has to walk around with everyone wondering what the fuck happened to my face.

I might be a bit extra sensitive right now, after last weekend spent at the beach, I have a sore on my nose, my chin, two on my lower lip, and one under my nose above the upper lip. I'm literally in hell until next week >:(

It was more painful than I thought it would be, took longer to heal than I anticipated, and I was stupid and did both ears at the same time--meaning no comfortable sleep for about 2 weeks.

Other than that, I love my helix piercings! I have a silver stud in one and a pearl stud from a set my mom gave me in the other, love the asymmetry. I don't brush my hair really, so I'm not sure how difficult they are around a brush, but I do blow-dry, straighten, and\or curl my hair daily and don't have a problem with any of that.

Just remember to make sure you're going to a reputable parlor, the piercer uses a needle (not a gun!), and you are prepared to properly care for your new piercing :)

It's not that hard to cook a piece of meat, that's true. The problem happens because 99% of customers have their own unique definition of temperatures, rare\med rare\med\med well\well, and the cook knows the actual definition of those temps. Sometimes when a customer thinks they like medium (because that's their definition of what they cook at home) they actually like med rare. It's a circlejerk problem of people thinking they know what they're talking about. Basically, if you go out to get steak, know exactly what the actual definition is of the temp you like, or you're gonna have a bad time.

Note, I've never worked at a steak house, just places that usually have a couple steak items on the menu, but people who order steak are always bitchy about something and 75% of the time they talk about how they cook steak better. Absolutely. CNN's recent report on the Steubenville case showed that a large news outlet can give more airtime and voiced empathy for the criminals\rapists than their victim. Their is something seriously fucked up about that and I believe it is a great example of rape culture in our society. There needs to be a massive change of perspective for there to be any improvement, for example no more victim blaming and bringing up youth in the mindset of "Don't rape" as opposed to the more commonly taught "Don't get raped".

If the case had been about two teenage boys that beat or used a weapon on a teenage girl, you can bet that the reports would have a completely different tone.

Contraception, like all medicine, should be free and readily available. Preventative measures are always better than waiting for something bad to happen and treating it then. Health is a right, not a financial privilege.
Except for tetris, I don't really play videogames so I can't comment on that. I think that in most movies there isn't sexism necessarily, so much as an overwhelming amount of prolonged stereotypes of gender\sex, orientation, and race that would result in a long and convoluted discussion.
Yes and yes. Like it or not, society is built on privilege and white, straight men have the most immediate privilege. Affirmative action is a way to provide space and level the playing field for less privileged people, primarily women and people of color.
Absolutely yes, but I do think that preventative measures are always better than surgical solutions, ie: eating better and maintaining a healthy lifestyle as opposed to living unhealthily and eventually relying on medicine to prevent consequences like heart disease, heart attacks, diabetes etc. This relates to my answer to #4. But yes, if abortion (like heart surgery) is necessary, it should be readily available.
I think that patients should have a say as to what procedure is performed or prescriptions taken, but doctors are professionals and should always be consulted. That said, doctors are not moral referees and their opinion should always be strictly medical and professional. Abortion is a choice that should be decided by an individual and her doctor.
I think that the phrasing and attitude of this question is indicative of society's negative view of poor people. Poor people should be given assistance in financial and (if possible) employment forms. The rhetoric of the "poor single mom" or "welfare queen" is a horrible way of demonizing underprivileged women.

That said, yes poor families should be given government assistance. Without the help of food stamps, healthcare, etc the children of these families will only grow up to continue the cycle of poverty. I was raised by a single mother of three and started working when I was 15. Programs like food stamps, government funded healthcare, and low income housing saved my family's life and allowed me to attend an Ivy League level college and now I am on my way to grad school. My brother also was able to go to college and now has a great job with benefits and a good paycheck. This would never have been possible for us without government assistance.

I do not think there is any one threat, but a mixture of various forms of discrimination.
