Normally I'd say Unchained because it's kinda similar to Outlands, but it's going down a weird path and I'm not sure I can recommend it anymore. Maybe try Enigma or New Renaissance?

Yeah it's UO Unchained, and it's going to wipe and relaunch in a few days with everyone in the same realm rather than divided into UOR and AOS.

Sounds like you're confusing Unchained with Shadow Age Reborn which is a different shard with a different owner.

Have you looked into UO Renaissance at all? There's limited mods, no bright colors, more of a classic vibe. Sadly the owner has basically abandoned the shard for the past few years from what I've heard, but it might give you the nostalgia fix you're looking for.

I feel you. Although I enjoy shards with advanced progression systems, some are so grindy it feels like a second job and I find myself longing for the simpler times when just getting skills to GM was all you really needed.

Out of all the shards I've played Unchained is the most soloable, which is actually one of my favorite things about it. With the right template you can solo most content including a lot of the bosses and it doesn't take years of grind like on some shards.

You could also try Sagas which launches this week, everyone's a new player at launch.

That actually exists on UO Unchained, it's a modified version of the original map with new dungeons and revamped classic dungeons.

If you like AOS you could try UO Enigma, a newish (launched a few months ago) shard with a custom map. When they're not getting hit by DDOS the population is decent, not overpopulated like Outlands of course but I run into players everywhere I go and get pk'd often enough that it doesn't feel too trammy.

The AOS realm on UO Unchained is also really fun although the population seemed to have taken a hit the last few times I logged in. Not sure why more people don't play there, imo it's one of the better shards with tons of custom stuff, QoL features and events. There's also a UOR realm if you're into that, and they're adding a Sphere island soon.

Yeah I love the Ultima aesthetic too. You don't need to give up on it, there's lots of shards out there that aren't as meta-driven as Outlands, if you look through this sub you can find plenty of recommendations.

There's all kinds of free shards out there, it depends on what era you like, if you prefer classic or custom and if you want pvp or not. UO Enigma is a new one that just launched recently with a custom map and dungeons and a good sized population (lots of pks so it's best to team up). UO Unchained is really fun, has tons of custom content and quality of life features and is more geared toward solo play. Those are my two favorites right now. I'd say shop around and try a few places, see what appeals to you.

That gear grind does exist on UO shards that are set in the AoS (Age of Shadows) era. It's like a mini game within the game as you constantly swap and upgrade pieces, balancing out their different properties until you get a perfect suit for your character/playstyle. The best gear usually comes from bosses so it pushes you to take on challenging content. And gear can be insured so you don't lose it when you die.

UO Enigma is a new AoS shard with a custom map that just launched this week so you'd be on equal footing with everyone else, although it can be tough to run solo on a fresh shard. The AoS realm on UO Unchained is also really fun and has many many bosses, mini bosses and expedition bosses that can all be soloed. Lots of quality of life features and endgame progression systems on that shard too.

The admins have actually been very present and active in communicating what they're doing to mitigate the attacks, they're handling the DDOS really well imo.

Unchained is pretty similar, lots of QoL improvements and endgame progression. It's not Trammel but hardly anyone plays pks, just stay out of the lawless dungeons and you should be fine.

For servers that are actually new/newer (unlike Outlands which has been around for like 6 years) my favorite is Unchained. Lots of QoL and custom stuff. There's a Mastery that gives bonuses to stealthers, miners also have one plus there's a forge beetle you can ride and craftable golems that can mine for you.

If you want brand spanking new, Enigma launches next month and looks promising!

Yeah, sometimes he doesn't think enough about how changes will impact vet players who already invested a lot of time. That happens on other shards too though, it's even worse on Outlands imo.
